Title: Removed some anodizing Post by: firehand10k on March 03, 2017, 07:27:03 AM I thought my Shark would look better in all silver and gold without the little splash of black the Archon V3.1 neck provided. So, I set about to remover the black from that neck.
Here it is as it started the night: (https://c1.staticflickr.com/3/2022/32076519274_de25fffd43_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/QSuxDL)My modified Aeons. (work in progress) (https://flic.kr/p/QSuxDL) by Firehand10k (https://www.flickr.com/photos/firehand10k/), on Flickr I didn't want to mess up my favorite saber so I did some chemical testing on a spare Flramberge LE collar I had lying around and got good results from Easy-Off followed by a polishing with Maas metal polish: (https://c1.staticflickr.com/4/3886/33064463012_6ebc4d0f44_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/SnN1Uu)Deanodizing saber parts. I rinsed it under warm water and found the black removed but the parts spotty (its in another spare piece I had to protect the threads): (https://c1.staticflickr.com/3/2899/33179461436_6192f8feba_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/SxXpVW)Deanodizing saber parts. You saber looks gorgeous like that! See, if you managed this on the neck of the archon V3.1, I might try it on a dark prophecy to get rid of the black anodizing on the sections just above and just bellow the switch section. Also, I wish US offered an all silver (and gold) version of the archon 3.1, would make for a great Jacen Solo hilt.
Points!!! Title: Re: Removed some anodizing Post by: Lord Canterbury on March 03, 2017, 12:52:31 PM That came out extremely well! Thanks for the tip on how you did it.
Point for that one for sure . . . Title: Re: Removed some anodizing Post by: firehand10k on March 03, 2017, 01:26:50 PM Nice! You saber looks gorgeous like that! If I were going to try to remove just the color above and below the switch I would try to mask the areas I don't want removed with some kind of rubberized tape. I wouldn't spray the cleaner on heavy as it could seep under the masking. I would try applying it by spraying it on an old cloth and rubbing or dabbing it on. Wear gloves of course! When I get a chance I'll try it later with my spare cross guard cross so you can see if it's worth trying. I'd hate to see you Prophecy come out a mess. Title: Re: Removed some anodizing Post by: scifidude79 on March 03, 2017, 02:41:11 PM Wow, who knew Easy Off would take off anodizing? That's really cool, have a point for that info and for the awesome mod to your saber. It looks great, and it now matches the rest of your collection perfectly. :)
Title: Re: Removed some anodizing Post by: Jediseth on March 03, 2017, 02:48:19 PM That's s really cool idea, I'm going to remember that trick. Those activation boxes are a great addition too. +1
Just realized your my 700th post. 👍 Title: Re: Removed some anodizing Post by: firehand10k on March 03, 2017, 06:50:06 PM Now I'm just waiting for the Scorpion pommel to come back in stock so I can get one and strip it and shine up then this saber will be complete as far as the exterior goes.
Title: Re: Removed some anodizing Post by: projectno253 on March 03, 2017, 09:16:53 PM I just came on here wondering if I'd have to post about removing the anodizing on my standard Archon 3.1 pommel...looks like I won't have to do that! ;D
Gonna have a classic style pommel for my Archon in no time, was regretting not getting that version. Wearing my Archon on a carabiner around town (yes, I'm that guy ::) ) has worn off the anodizing on the bottom of the pommel near the Tri-ring... This is AWESOME firehand10k . . . thank you for sharing this . . . the MHS Scorpion pommel was the very first thing I thought of too, then my mind ran away with many silly idea's (come back here damn mind, I need you for work today, lol) . . . points 8) Title: Re: Removed some anodizing Post by: projectno253 on March 04, 2017, 12:25:56 AM Trying this out with my standard Archon pommel, but 5 minutes of soaking did nothing after I washed it. Letting it soak longer.
Unfortunately I don't have the heavy duty one, only this kind: http://mobileimages.lowes.com/product/converted/062338/062338740171.jpg Is that the problem here? Title: Re: Removed some anodizing Post by: Corwyn VonBeck on March 04, 2017, 03:18:19 AM That is a fine looking trio you have there, thanks for the Easy-Off tip.. will be trying that on a Scorpion Pommel as well.
Title: Re: Removed some anodizing Post by: DarthBoneTD on March 04, 2017, 04:27:23 AM Great looking Sabers, and thanks for the tip.

I don't know the difference between the two but the heavy duty definitely worked quickly on both pieces I tried so far. The first one I did soak for around 15 minutes. The second went faster but I didn't time it. I just checked it then reapplied if it wasn't ready. Title: Re: Removed some anodizing Post by: JediXIX on March 04, 2017, 02:48:52 PM Ok . . . just to add to firehand10k's AWESOME process . . . 8)
Got my MHS Scorpion pommel . . . and I checked under our sink, here in Oz we had some Mr Muscle Heavy Duty oven cleaner . . . thought I'd give it a go, and take a few pics . . . I didn't have any time for polish yet, but here's just some quick pics of what I did, this literally took me a bit over half an hour . . . sprayed on oven cleaner, left for 15 minutes, then used the foam to scrub with a brush, and rinse in water . . . fairly simple really, now I just have to give it a polish :) I taped the threads with electrical tape, and you can see it protected that area quite well . . . Now I can finally add a consular pommel to my wish/need list ;D Title: Re: Removed some anodizing Post by: projectno253 on March 04, 2017, 05:22:09 PM Well it seems that heavy duty cleaners are the only thing that can do it...the normal Easy Off I had didn't work even after letting the pommel sit over night :-\
I just wish it could've been as easy as all these other guys ;D Title: Re: Removed some anodizing Post by: Corwyn VonBeck on March 05, 2017, 12:49:11 AM Awesome Jed, thanks! so much easier than all the sanding i was planning on!
Title: Re: Removed some anodizing Post by: firehand10k on March 05, 2017, 08:36:10 AM Nice JediXIX. Thats exactly the pommel I want to get and do this with. uS said they should be back around April so I wanted to be sure I'd know what to do with it.
Title: Re: Removed some anodizing Post by: shade_1313 on March 05, 2017, 07:46:29 PM Awesome thread! Now I can finally add a consular pommel to my wish/need list ;D Yeah, I had been wishing for a while that they had a silver version of that. I didn't realize that it'd be so easy to roll your own. Title: Re: Removed some anodizing Post by: CyberKyber on March 06, 2017, 07:07:27 PM If I were going to try to remove just the color above and below the switch I would try to mask the areas I don't want removed with some kind of rubberized tape. Sorry for the late reply =S Aaaww, thanks! Much appreciated! I don't have a dark prophecy that I could ruin yet anyway, so don't worry, I'm not in a hurry XD But yeah, masking off the other parts would be quite tricky; since the prophecy is a hilt with no removable parts, good masking is essential! I was thinking of maybe masking it with heat shrink plus electrical tape on the edges, just in case the products seeps in through the normal masking tape. And yes, gloves are a must! Title: Re: Removed some anodizing Post by: Isola815 on March 06, 2017, 09:33:56 PM Yeah, I had been wishing for a while that they had a silver version of that. Now I just need them to come back in to stock ;D Title: Re: Removed some anodizing Post by: Jediseth on March 07, 2017, 02:07:19 AM Thanks for the tip on removing that stuff. I would have never thought of that. That idea just might come in handy.
Title: Re: Removed some anodizing Post by: projectno253 on March 11, 2017, 06:26:46 PM Finally got around to picking up some heavy duty easy off...and boy does that make it easy!
Haven't polished it yet, but since I'm converting my Archon 3.1 into a Luke V2, a weathered look will be fine for now. Special guest is my Graflex 2.0, waiting to be equipped with US electronics ;) And a nice shot of the Graflex 2.0 clamp on the Archon...definitely going to buy a clamp for the Archon when I convert it. I just wish the Archon was shorter/more accurate in length.
