Title: Obsidian Launcher & Mac [WORKING] Post by: TheChosenOne on November 23, 2011, 02:21:27 PM Hey everyone I've got Obsidian working 100% on my Macbook Pro.
Here's a screen shot. (http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i219/justin7942163/ScreenShot2011-11-24at11802AM.png) I'm really tired so I'll write in detail what I did tomorrow. Title: Re: Obsidian Launcher & Mac [WORKING] Post by: ed_ification on November 23, 2011, 03:37:36 PM Very nice - I'll want to have a look as well. I do have a PC that's been doing the job, but I would prefer to do more on my primary computer.

..... wow ..... No emulators or partitioning? that's amazing! Please do share. Title: Re: Obsidian Launcher & Mac [WORKING] Post by: Gaius on November 23, 2011, 05:24:14 PM Would love to run Obsidian on my MabBook rather than on my ancient Dell.

Hello members of the Jedi Council and Sith Order, I would like to present to my fellow Jedi and Sith the best method for using 'Obsidian Launcher' on a Mac. I'd like to first start with the history of my work with getting the software to work on Mac flawlessly. Originally when I first started I tried to install it using a program called 'Cross Over' This program while showed promise proved to be quite difficult to understand and use, I quickly discarded it and tried something else. Wine Skin, This is an open source program that allows people to develop ports for windows programs (Mostly games) and some have been quite successful (KOTOR II, Oblivion, Battlefield 2) I eventually managed to get Obsidian to work on this and I was very, very excited as this took me a long time to do. While I could boot the program, I could only use it in offline mode as the USB couldn't be detected. So then I tried something else and today, I bring you a message of unity with in The Force. SKIP TO TUTORIAL How to get 'Obsidian Launcher' to work on the Mac operating system. Things you WILL need: A computer running Mac OSX Lion A copy of Windows 7 (Legit or not doesn't matter) A decent amount of RAM (4 - 8GIG) for this to run smoothly. Obsidian Launcher http://www.saberfonts.com/launcher/obsidianusbv2.0.0.zip (http://www.saberfonts.com/launcher/obsidianusbv2.0.0.zip) Things you MAY need: $89.95 AUD (If you choose the light side) uTorrent (If you choose the dark side.) http://www.utorrent.com/ (http://www.utorrent.com/) Step The First: Install a boot camp partition on your Macbook Pro (I'm going to assume you all know how to do this if not.) http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1461 (http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1461) 2: Download and install 'Parallels' - Free two week trial https://nct.parallels.com/fulfill/0285.015 (https://nct.parallels.com/fulfill/0285.015) or http://thepiratebay.org/torrent/6692062/Parallels.Desktop.v7.0.14922.693916-ADDiCT (http://thepiratebay.org/torrent/6692062/Parallels.Desktop.v7.0.14922.693916-ADDiCT) 3: -Install the program, Installation is quite easy (as with installing anything on a Mac) -After you have installed the program either enter your pirated key or start your free trial. -You will be presented with a window titled 'Parallels Wizard' Select 'Migrate From Boot Camp' (Something like that I can't remember) -Let the software do its thing, pretty soon you will have your boot camped Windows ready to go. -Afterwards go into the General settings for your Windows 7 install and give it 2 CPU's and 2048 MB's of RAM for a decent experience. -Next go to Options 'Startup and Shutdown select the following 'When Parallels Desktop Starts' 'Coherence' 'Close Window' 'Ask me what to do' -Leave everything else, close the window. -Start Windows 7 and the inbuilt tutorial will show you the rest. Enjoy using Obsidian on your Mac, No more reboots! No more other computers! - - - Though some people don't I do support piracy, it allows you to test out a product 100% before you buy it. I do hardcore video editing so I pirated the Final Cut Suite. I used it a lot and decided it was well worth how much they were asking. If you like this software buy it! I also plan on using this method to Run 'The Old Republic' I'll be installing it tomorrow (Found someone in my home town that has actually downloaded it) I'll let you know how well (or poorly) it runs! Thanks for the heads up. Master Artorius will be very pleased ;) I felt like I was being commemorated by the Jedi Council itself, thanks! Comments (jaw drops to floor) ..... wow ..... No emulators or partitioning? that's amazing! Please do share. Not quite, you still need to create a virtual machine (I've tried everything else!), the only way around this is to re-write obsidian for Mac, which is something I'd need Ultra to help me do. Title: Re: Obsidian Launcher & Mac [WORKING] Post by: ed_ification on November 24, 2011, 05:03:54 AM Ah. So unfortunately not a new solution. From the original post, I had hoped for a solution that worked in OS X natively, without the need for a Windows Install, such as your attempts with Cross Over and Wine Skin, which I had looked at previously but found too complicated.
I do appreciate the work done to attempt it, however. Ah, well, back to the PC I go. Title: Re: Obsidian Launcher & Mac [WORKING] Post by: Dark Lord Proscidior, Titus Solvan on November 24, 2011, 05:41:50 AM Enjoy using Obsidian on your Mac, No more reboots! No more other computers! I figured that a new build of Parallels would do it. As an aside, the mods may want to take out the links to questionable kosher files just to keep everything on the boards on the up and up. Those who are okay with such things, know how to get there. Ah. While you'd still need to do the Win install, you shouldn't have to do the Boot Camp roundabout first, just do an install through Parallels (which is pretty painless). Frankly, a Parallels install makes Cross Over and Wine Skin look like rocket science. The rub, of course, being the cost of Parallels, but you could use the trial to make sure it works first (or, yanno, one of those more questionable methods). Personally, I've had Parallels running on my Macs for a LONG time, for those oddball things that I just can't run on the mac otherwise (RPG tool software, oddball custom built software, whatever. Sadly, no US with Obsidian to have tested this out sooner myself. Title: Re: Obsidian Launcher & Mac [WORKING] Post by: Amplus Vir on November 24, 2011, 06:40:49 PM I think I'll just buy a cheap pc.
Title: Re: Obsidian Launcher & Mac [WORKING] Post by: Ultra on November 30, 2011, 05:56:26 PM Not quite, you still need to create a virtual machine (I've tried everything else!), the only way around this is to re-write obsidian for Mac, which is something I'd need Ultra to help me do. How can I help? Title: Re: Obsidian Launcher & Mac [WORKING] Post by: tiger salamander on December 02, 2011, 03:04:56 AM See my new post, I have a few ideas on this:
http://www.saberforum.com/index.php?topic=4051.0 (http://www.saberforum.com/index.php?topic=4051.0) Basically to run in OS (WITHOUT need for bootcamping into Windows), we need a WINE bottler to get the launcher to work. Most or perhaps all of us already know that. It's easy to do. The not so easy part is to get the USB connection detected. I'm not sure if anyone has noticed or not but the saber DOES show up under the system profiler. It even recognizes the manufactuer as ULTRASABERS. There must be a way to link the device ID into WINE (or Parallels, etc...) Then the laucher will detect the saber connection. Other than that the only two options for Mac users are bootcamp or picking up a cheap windows laptop somewhere. Title: Re: Obsidian Launcher & Mac [WORKING] Post by: Elim Vos on March 20, 2012, 04:11:19 PM has anyone considered an external HD? might be a solution...would it still taint our Macs?
just throwing an idea out there. Title: Re: Obsidian Launcher & Mac [WORKING] Post by: ed_ification on March 20, 2012, 07:28:46 PM The issue isn't one of drives, Elim - and if you mean why not mount Windows on an External Drive, I believe it has to be mounted on the system drive for Bootcamp to work properly.
If you mean why not place the launcher onto the External HD, it's more a question of the interaction of the USB drivers in the Mac OS... Title: Re: Obsidian Launcher & Mac [WORKING] Post by: Elim Vos on March 20, 2012, 08:09:55 PM I'm not really that tech savvy, my thought was installing windows and the launcher on to a external, then running it through a mac for display not actually having to install on to the macs hard drive. by what your saying, you still need to run some kind of emulator?
Title: Re: Obsidian Launcher & Mac [WORKING] Post by: ed_ification on March 20, 2012, 08:16:12 PM I believe that Windows has to be installed on the system drive, so an external doesn't work.
What a lot of us Mac-primary users wanted was a way to use the Obsidian Launcher without needing Windows at all - because that would be awesome. Title: Re: Obsidian Launcher & Mac [WORKING] Post by: Elim Vos on March 20, 2012, 08:27:02 PM that answers some questions,
guess we are left with getting a cheap netbook from ebay...... Title: Re: Obsidian Launcher & Mac [WORKING] Post by: tiger salamander on March 29, 2012, 08:16:18 PM It comes down to a registry issue. The saber's device id needs to get into the /dev folder somehow. If that saber id can get into the /dev folder then a symbolic link can be made into WINE's or Paralles window registry. Then we can run obsidians on mac 100%. Still have'nt figured out how to do this.
I've resigned myself to get a dirt cheap xp laptop but have'nt done so yet because I have'nt seen one for the right price yet. |
