Title: Assassins Creed Origins
Post by: Darth Knox on November 24, 2018, 01:47:55 AM
Buying it tomorrow. Anyone played it? How does it compare to other games in the franchise?

I was looking at this in the XBOX digital store myself. 60% off is an enticing discount. But, I've never played any of the other games in the series, even though I got the Ezio Collection for free with my console. Maybe I should play that first. Still, 60%....

I have it. It’s quite good and has a bit of Black Flag in it.   The storyline is good and the graphics are amazing. I have both that and Odyssey and my only complaint is that Origins wasn’t as long.

The Assassin Creed franchise is one of my favourite in gaming . I have loved all the games except for Assassins Creed 3 (which I found boring and didn't even finish playing) and Unity (which had so many bugs it was unplayable). If you haven't played them, I highly recommend you do, especially the Ezio collection; the first two are amazing, the third a little easy, short and repetitive.

I loved Black Flag, so that's a good sign. Did you play it on PS4 or Xbox?

I've played a few but through rentals so only got into the beginning levels.  Origins though is the only one I am seriously considering buying, the graphics are so beautiful that often I just spent time looking around like a tourist.

20 mins in and first impressions are.......good. So far I am getting shades of AC1, 2, Brotherhood and Black Flag. And this is no bad thing.

Now, you can’t control a ship but you can board them. Odyssey allows you to control only one, the one that you own.

I have both on Xbox

That's because you're a very naughty boy. And you deserve to be punished.

However, I will admit that there are some games on Xbox that I'd love to play. Just a shame that they're not available for PS4.

I have both and they're both good and both suck at the same time. Right now, I prefer the XBOX. But, that has more to do with reverse compatibility than anything else. It's hard to believe that I'd say this after all my not-so-fun efforts to get certain games to run in Vista and Windows 7, but Microsoft did backwards compatibility right on their consoles. Sony did it right on the PS2 and has bungled it since then. Also, I have big hands and like the XBOX controllers better. But, there's definitely some stuff to not like, such as the download times (sometimes) from MS's crappy servers. With the holiday weekend, it's going at a snail's pace, while I downloaded a game on Steam last night super fast. Same internet.

Anyway, I'll probably start with that Ezio collection, one of these days. I may also have the original game for the 360 around here, I can play that on the One as well. It's good to hear you're liking Origins so far, Knox. I've read good things about it, especially the environment and historical accuracy. That part will definitely appeal to me.

So you download games rather than buying them on disc? Am I the only one who still buys things on disc?

I have taken a break from the game to watch football and rugby highlights on tv, but will get back to it shortly. Visually it is beautiful, but all the AC games have looked beautiful, so am not surprised by this. I am liking the fighting/stealth system so far. I can see lots of replay appeal from this game.

I think you will really enjoy the Ezio games. Lots of stuff to do, the "real world" story is interesting (but unlike the movie, is kept to a minimum so you can focus on the important part - gaming in the past), the voice acting is on point and there is some good humour in there too.

Yup, I download them since it's easier to swap games rather than get up and walk over.  We play lots of games with friends and prefer to it loading much quicker as well.  Even with a physical game disc, both consoles will still have to download the entire game before you can play anyhow.  The only difference is that games you buy from the store is missing the 5 GB part that makes it work without a disc which is what the games you buy have.  I prefer it and have an external to move games that I don't play often to clear up space. (I have over 100 games on my Xbox One alone).

I do both, depends on prices. I got No Man's Sky recently for the XBOX One from Amazon on disc because it was cheaper. Yesterday, I bought Batman: Return to Arkham on digital because it was massively reduced in the XBOX digital store.

I always buy my games used. And I always tend to wait a year after release so the price will drop. So ACO was about £50 on release but I got it today for £15. Plus, if I ever get bored of it I can trade it in for another game.

I stopped buying from Game Stop since their back buy prices have always been an insult so I buy my games to own nowadays and don't mind if they're new or if I pay more since from experience, a lot of the used games I bought had scratches where up to a certain point, I couldn't play it.

Gamestop is a POS company. I stopped buying there when I realized I could get new games cheaper at Amazon and Walmart than what they wanted for used games. However, other stores sell used games. Ebay, Amazon, Walmart, other assorted big box stores. With the brick and mortar stores, you can usually find used both in stores and online.

With modern games where they're going to do a bunch of DLC, I usually wait for a massive price drop or sale and get the season pass, or wait for a complete compilation to be released.

Game (which is different to Gamestop) and CeX over here are probably the two biggest chains that sell used games, but they will not buy a disc off you unless it is in perfect condition. They will check the disc before you can trade it in, so you know when you buy it there will no issues.

As for price, I am physically incapable of spending £50-£60 on just one game. I just cannot do it. And so I am patient....watching....waiting...until the time comes.

Understood gentlemen.  Sometimes it's better to wait to be able to afford some games. I'm a huge gamer since I follow new games, console updates, release and go to conventions like E3.  My game play is much different and on a larger scale than the average player so I in turn buy my games and consoles differently and to fit my needs.  I typically buy new games and preorder the ones that I like.  Others that I don't care for, I'll wait until it's cheaper but most of the time I spend $60.00 which isn't cheap and I'm not bragging by any means.  I also partake in the free Microsoft games that they give us once a month too.

Sounds like bragging to me!  :P ;D

I would say that I am definitely more a casual gamer. It helps pass the time occasionally, when I'm not watching movies, at the gym or out & about.

I did the "free" games on PS Plus for a couple years, since I had to have Plus to play Battlefront online. ::) So, there were two games each month, one you could supposedly keep forever and one that you got to keep as long as you had Plus. It was all lies. Once I let my subscription lag, none of the games were still in my library.

With Xbox, you have three free games a month and you just download them which is yours forever as long as you have the Xbox Live Gold membership. Even after you stop your yearly subscription, it's yours

Like I said, that was how it was supposed to work on PS Plus too, it would say on the sales page which game you could allegedly keep. In reality, I got to keep none of them. I hate being lied to like that. It also left a giant mess on my HD that I had to clean up.

Buying it tomorrow. Anyone played it? How does it compare to other games in the franchise?

I am completing the last DLC right now - It's really good much less linear than others, if you're into history its really cool to see how they've done the difference cities (greek, Egyptian and roman) and how they live alongside the ruins of prior ages which is something you don't really think of but makes sense considering egypts long history.

Game play on PS4 i use the secondary control setting (Square is attack) really didn't like the default.  Combat is a lot like Batman Arkam games in my opinion or Shadow of Mordor. The side quests are a bit samey and the map is huge and takes ages to do all the location quests if you so choose, but if you're into exploring you'll love it.

Story line is OK, some missed opportunities but solid enough the actually missions...I'm of two minds a lot are quit simple and things from the prior games like eavesdropping and following people staying hidden are gone - admittedly i hated some of those sections in prior games as they could be unforgiving for small slip ups, but their complete absence is a bit jarring and would've added variety. Still overall its enjoyable but a lot more hack and slash than stealth - you can try stealth but there is no incetive to do so in a lot of cases.

MY tip is to explore around a lot and do location objectives and side quests in a couple of regions and build up your level and equipment so you find story missions and further exploration easier and don't get caught overwhelmed.  the main character is alright, seems a bit flat at times but he grows on you and builds depth if you do the side quests especially re the astrology circles to build his back story.  There are also some cool little secret things about the place to find, and exploring tombs is ok but not tomb raider cool.

So far i've completed entire main map and Hidden ones DLC and finishing of curse of the Pharaohs, I've played it more like Skyrim or Morrowind than assassins creed cause i really like wandering around and checking out the ruins and cities and landscapes, as well as how they've done the NPCs going about their business - its a great game but don't expect something like Syndicate (which i really enjoyed especially for the optional ways in on main missions...and you know thought Evie was a pretty awesome character), bt for what it is i think it does it well and can be highly enjoyable if as i've said you can get into just checking out the way they've recreated Egypt of that era with real quotes from Egyptian texts, the religious processions that wander to the innumerbale temples and workers in the fields.

My first negative of the game, and it's something I've consistently not liked with virtually all games in the AC franchise: the map. It is a little difficult to read/see all the elements on. It's not a deal breaker and hopefully I'll get used to it further into the game.

I would definitely recommend Black Flag and playing them in release order, as there's a in game "real world" story that is ongoing from game to game. Plus, you can get your crew singing "Drunken Sailor" before going into battle which is hella fun.
