I never saw why there was any debate. The entire movie takes place on Christmas Eve. He's in California to go to a Christmas party and spend the holiday with his family. The fact that it's Christmas is mentioned about 50 times in the film. Hell, it's more of a Christmas film than It's a Wonderful Life, where only the end of the film takes place on Christmas. (yes, I know there were some other Christmases along the way)
