Title: Costume Rules of Lucas (ex. No Glasses?)
Post by: janx on January 13, 2020, 09:57:55 PM
I read an article about how the Pershing character in The Mandalorian broke a Lucas rule on costuming.

https://screenrant.com/mandalorian-george-lucas-rules-glasses-doctor-pershing/

Apparently, George didn't want glasses, presumably because it looks like our world/time.

I think that sucks for those of us who need the darn things and cosplay, but that never stopped anybody.

Here's a recap of the list thus far per that article:
no zippers
no buttons
no glasses
no bras (seriously?  What's the slave costume holding up?)

I'm curious what other costume guidance Lucas/Lucasfilm had. What else have y'all heard of?

The no bras in space thing has literally the funniest justification. "if you wear a bra the lack of gravity will make it float up and choke you" George have you ever met a woman?

Anyways, I've noticed the costume designers tend to shy away from polyesters (Leia's white dress in the original might be a poly or nylon knit, due to it being the 70's). All of the Jedi wear linen, noil, muslins and such. There aren't many loud patterns. Even in the club scene in AOTC, the extras are wearing muted colors or blacks, and the few who are in bright colors (there's woman in a silver iridescent miniskirt/croptop combo, and another in a red dress, and a twi'lek in some darker neon swirls), aren't wearing very patterned pieces (think lulueroe).

Something else I've noticed—no earrings. Most of Padame's most elaborate outfits have either a headdress or her hair is over her ears. I think Satine might be wearing a pair of green earrings as part of her Duchess outfit, but that might be a headdress as well. The characters in Star Wars don't seem to wear much jewelry, aside from headpieces (tiaras, headdresses, twi'lek head wraps, etc). and if they do, its unobtrusive.

Good observations.  I figure the stack of these might be useful clues for costuming.

on jewelry, the Mandalorian had that skull necklace he gave to baby yoda.

ANd at the end of SW7, that kid had a resistance ring that opened up.

not much for examples :)

Thanks! I actually realized that I was wrong like three seconds after hitting post. Padame does wear earrings when she tells Anakin she's pregnant.

But they are subtle.

There's also Rose's BFF necklace. I'm sure there are other examples, but no one runs around decked out like Marilyn at the end of Gentlemen Prefer Blondes.

Yeah, but there aren’t many people who could pull that off, either.  Marilyn was one of a very small number.

And so were carpet/lounge slippers! Peter Cushing was famous for wearing slippers on set as the Imperial boots were so uncomfortable for him. So when you see him interrogate Leia and blasting Alderaan...he had a pair of fluffy slippers on! Tarkin doesn't sound so intimidating like that now does he?

(Obviously for long range, full length shots of him he had to wear the boots)

If you haven't seen Carrie Fisher's comedy sketch on "no underwear in space" I highly recommend XD

Look, I'm blind as a bat without my glasses (near sighted), and I am not putting anything physically onto my eyeball (ei. contact lenses). George Lucas doesn't own Star Wars anymore, so glasses are just fine and aint no one gonna tell me otherwise. lol

Glasses are okay but only if you hide them under a helmet:

In canon, though, the Controller from Rebels wears glasses.

(He looks disconcertingly like a coworker of mine, who is shockingly not an IT guy)
