Title: Emerald or RGB?
Post by: Galef on April 29, 2020, 10:41:49 PM
Been thinking about this a lot. Emerald seems to have by far the most options, but there's something to be said for the simplicity and convenience of swapping colors at the press of a button.

Assuming your hilt of choice has the option for RGB, would you choose it over Emerald?

Wow....

This is a difficult question.   But on full reflection, I would say ... no.

The RGB option does have convenience but it is limited on colors to the set mixes.  You have red, blue, green of course, and then a golden-yellow mix of red/green, a lavender-pink from red-blue, and a light, slightly aqua arctic blue from blue/green.   And in theory, white from all three.   But the one I had never got to white, more of a wierd off-white pearly color.

What you gain from Emerald is complete control over the color.   And then add in the pulse effects and flash-on-clash, which are really kinda cool, too.

Overall you get a LOT from Emerald, but you do sacrifice flexibility.   So if changing on-the-fly is what you really want you need to go with RBG ... or you could elevate all the way to Diamond, but then you're in another level of expenditure, so there is that, too.   :-)

But short answer - I would go with Emerald.

I voted "Emerald" and was going to post the same thing as Karmack, but then Mrs. Maestro Jones said dinner was ready, and food over-rules posting every time.  I agree with everything Karmack.

Emerald drive, it takes less space on the saber since the RGB will need 3 switches to change colors versus the Emerald drive where you just use the launcher to change.  Plus, there's a ton more colors you and customize your saber blade with using the Emerald driver

Are Emerald colors brighter? I know RGB sabers are about the same as single LEDs.
If I set Emerald to pure blue, would it be comparable to Tri-cree? Or just single LED like an RGB with just blue activated?

One of the reasons I'm asking is that my next purchase is either going to be an Emeral Scorpion or a Tri-Blue Apprentice V4 stunt. I want to use a thick walled photon blade to get the brightest green possible. If Emerald is brighter that single Blue, I'll go Emerald.
If not, Tri-Blue it is.

Although I kinda like the idea of pulsing an Emerald between Blue and Red through a Photon blade. Should show up Green to Pyrestone orange.

It depends on application. I duel like a monster so I would definitely choose RGB for a dueling saber to keep my working components to a minimum.. I also collect sabers for show an ssn daily wear so I like to have Emerald in some of those. That way I can customize it for my daily mood. Although I'm at the point now where I dont have much need for Emeral because when I'm feeling dark I can wear my Chosen One or my Menace staff and when I'm feeling light I can clip on my Guardian or my Graflex.

Emerald colors may appear slightly brighter because of the way they control the LED versus the Resistirs or buck puck but it uses the same LED types and the difference  is barely noticable if at all.

I think given the cost difference (which isn't much when you add FOC to an RGB) the versatility of Emerald has won me over.

I still like RGBs for stunt sabers for the reasons Firehand mentions.
But for a Premium hilt with sound, Emerald is going to be my next choice.

Given that I'm wanting Tri-blue only to use a Photon blade, but I know even using single Arctic blue is brighter than even my Tri-green sabers.
So if I set the Emerald to full blue and full green, it will still be ridiculously bright in a photon blade. And pulse it to full Red since I'd get this in a Scorpion which is a very dark side hilt.
