Title: Carrying Your Saber.
Post by: Master Lucien Kane on March 20, 2012, 03:01:28 PM
Does anyone else carry their lightsaber on their person daily? I do, I hadn't been because my custom saber is on the workbench right now... Needs new electronics and such. I now have a new saber, and I've been carrying her around. I love it, it gives me such an opportunity to talk to people, and express myself.

I feel like so many people are afraid to live life out loud today for fear of offending people... Too afraid to express their beliefs too afraid to express their likes and dislikes.... I love bashing down that wall, and being a bold person who lives life as myself. I don't hide behind any walls or false personae. I am a Jedi, and I act accordingly!

Anyways, I thought it would be neat to have a thread where we can post pictures of us carrying our sabers in everyday life... You can be in costume or not. Just any pictures of you carrying a saber will do.

I'll have some coming up soon.

That's pretty incredible man, it's good that you're proud of who you are and unashamed to show off your passions.

Here's a pic of Artorius and I with our sabers on our belts from the day we went to see TPM in 3D:

(http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7057/6935446049_0d34a4e52a_b.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/63659933@N04/6935446049/)

Unfortunately I don't generally carry mine daily.  I work as an engineer on a military base, so I guess I just wanted to avoid catching any crap (from a security point of view) about carrying such a thing.  Still in my "trial period" so to speak, and I'd rather not give them any reason to boot me ;)

I hear you... I've worked jobs where carrying a saber would be frowned upon... I just carry it take it off during work hours and place it back on my belt when I get off work. lol!

I don't blame you though.... I wouldn't lose a job over a lightsaber either lol.

Perhaps I'll put it on when I get home!  I'd certainly like more opportunities to wear it...

It's definitely something I'm planning on doing at the next con I go to (which will actually be my first con).

well i would carry my saber but my everyday life consists of going to school getting home going out for like 3 hours and get home and do whatever i dont have any chances to carry it.

in new jersey my school would call a swat team move in and remove me from the premises at gun point... howell high is extremely careful with what happens there.  and knowing where i live some jerk cop would probably stop me for no reason say it was a weapon and then pull out any excuse they can to arrest me so no im not going to try it for  a long time.

if my job actually allowed it I might carry one around on occasion

sadly, it does not...not even on Halloween. the uniform code is strict :(

I did take one with me to see Phantom Menace 3D though. and I'm often practicing out in my front lawn/driveway

Stephen how's that holster on the quickdraw? It looks sick.

Also it's not much more normal in America... I get away with it... because I'm... well I'm me. I have a certain demeanor about me that allows me to pull it off I guess.

Maybe I'm just brushed up enough on my Jedi mind tricks... I get stopped by cops all the time out here... they're mostly just curious. If you're polite and cordial they are usually pretty chill. If you have anything with claws that might be the only problem.

Stephen how's that holster on the quickdraw? It looks sick.

Actually reasonably fast when the leather is 'loosen' up a bit. I have a seperate topic on this 'holster' system where you can see what I used here.

You basically pull the hilt up at the emitter / claws in one move... then catch and grib teh hilt. You can draw it with only your right hand. It is a shame its not a 'real' saber. Buit if your left produces a blade you can have the whole thing together in 20 sec or less.

I am Sooo looking forward to the 4th of July. when the sun starts setting everyone and their mother breaks out little toy sabers until the Fireworks start. I feel a swarm of questions this year from the college kids, seeing as I live between 3 different ones. I would wear mine but can find the belt clips.   Sorry if I got off topic a little bit.

I do have 1 question though...where do I find the belt clip for the teck nobs ?

There are several vendors on Amazon that sell them, although Ultra has said that US will be selling them soon...

FYI, we will be offering movie-replica covertec clips very soon.   ;)

I don't have my saber yet, but I kinda imagine carrying it like Collin Mcleod from the anime Highlander: Vengence. Collin carried his katana at all times in a reverse grip manner, that way he was ALWAYS ready.

BTW, that anime is very good if you haven't seen it :)

THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE!

I carry my Sig pretty much everywhere and I don't think my lightsaber is usurping that space anytime soon.

Now, in my state, its illegal to carry in some places: typically those places where you'd actually need it. Depending on my companions, I might consider the back holster and luightsaber I mentioned in one of my reviews (actually sold for back country umbrellas) but I don't know. Nice thing about a concealed weapon is that it's concealed. Looking like I do, a nerdy club strapped to my back might be asking for a fight. :-/

Just for the record.. aside of a Star Wars movie or a convention... why would anyone want to carry a modified flashlight with him all day :)

I just saw some modern day jedi being interviewed on YouTube and they are slightly losing their grip on reality.

I like it... Star Wars has helped me in my spiritual walk so much throughout my life... Carrying my lights is a symbol of my dedication to God. I know that sounds crazy, but when you walk up to help someone and they ask you about your saber... It's an open door to be a witness... Not to turn this into a religious discussion, but that's just how it is for me.

I know it's crazy, I know it doesn't make any sense, but I carry my saber because of my Faith.

I have been carrying my saber around for about a week and a half, and while I do get the occasional sidelong glance from someone with opinions on what is acceptable behavior, most people either don't understand or think it's pretty cool. One girl came up to me and asked me what it was because she couldn't figure it out. I said, " it's a lightsaber" like it was no big deal and she responded with, "Oh that's cool, so you're a jedi?" "Yep" "awesome!"

I'll post a pic of my look later. First I need to take a pic  ::)

I would totally carry one of mine if I could, but I spend most of my waking time on-court and that would be most uncomfortable ;D Then parties and dinners and the sort.... I don't think the wee socialites would appreciate it one bit.... so I might have to try it ;)

Point for using the sabers as witnessing tools, Lucien. I should start doing that myself. :)

I'll have to dig up some recent pics for you guys, but I typically carry one saber or another every work day. I use them as headlights for my skateboard and to avoid being hit by anyone backing out of their driveways on a side street. Works well! I might have to slack back with it a little though, as the days are getting longer and I'm typically heading home while it's still light out now.  :P Carrying it not lit, I'd be a little worried about some cop deciding to give me crap. Oh, and for the record, I have a standing request to bring any and all new sabers by to show to several of the staff at my local Chick-Fil-A restraunt. Those guys are awesome....

Very rarely do I get an adverse reaction to my sabers. Most people as you said either don't get it, or think it's cool.

My favorite is when people ask me if it's a real lightsaber.

Awesome stuff guys! and thanks for the points everyone they are appreciated!

A timely topic!  I have an Archon V2 (no covertech knob) and will need to carry it with me to an event in just over a week -- any suggestions for how to secure it to a belt or sash while leaving it free enough to draw and wield?  (Just in case the event gets infiltrated... you know how these things happen sometimes... :P )  Something that can be gotten or cobbled together soon?

Thanks!

peace,

Kannik

I would go with a covertec or D ring style set up... but that's just my preference... If you're trying to figure something out quick... I would try rigging up an over the shoulder holster or something. Something where you can leave the blade on your saber too.

Yes.. those are the leather belt part and metal ring and will hold the glaive perfectly. But as I was afraid of damaging the hilt with the metal ring I got myself a fully leather holder.

Kudos to you Lucien:)  I takes courage to stand apart from the crowd...but it's a worthwhile endeavour.  It's hard to find yourself when you hide in everyone elses shadow!  I'm heavily tattooed, and although that doesn't seem that unusual these days, when I started getting mine, it was very rare for a woman be tattooed at all, much less sporting a full arm etc.  Now it's just...meh...passe.  I miss the days of the mystique of coloured man, or woman.  If it gives you the strength and courage to deal with life, and to share those qualities with others...more power to you:)

I would love to wear mine to work...but my boss would freak out, and even a Sith knows when to fight, and when to lie low and not attract too much attention.  However, I'm thinking of carrying one in my backpack...I'll know it's there:)  Can't wait to take mine to gym on Monday night....the other patrons have seen me jogging on the treadmills in chainmail, so it won't be too out of place:P

Darkside point for apparent mastery of said dark side. 'Tightness leads to Pain' Pain leads to Anger, Anger leads to Hate... lol Some one should make a demotivational poster out of that and hang it near department store dressing rooms.  ;D

I'm going out on a limb here and revealing that I am still in High School, but the first day I got my Ultrasaber man, I brought that thing in and, I am essentially in all advanced classes, everyone absolutely went crazy over it. Even the people I wouldn't have classified as knowing the difference between a Jedi and Sith could appreciate the lightsaber. I only wish I could bring it in with the blade to show them some spinning; maybe for the Talent show later this year haha. Hopefully I'll be able to drive me senior year (next year) so I can show off in the parking lot, it would be my claim to fame in the school, seeing as it is I haven't one. Other than that I am a calculus student. Fun stuff!

Sorry for the double post, but just to add to it, I have gained a lot of confidence from learning how to wield one of these Lightsabers. Between the ability to do something I've always wanted to do and the problem solving skills involved in AP Calc I have become a much more confident and decisive person these past few weeks. (Prior to that the start of the semester, when I started Calc)

Yeah, when I took mine in, I made sure to call it a a "toy" when I talked about it to teachers and authority figures, but when people were holding it and stuff I made sure to tell them the LED is classified as a Class 2 Laser Device so I am not Liable for their potential blindness if they etc. etc. Just leave no room for you to be at fault seeing as it could be used like a weapon.

I have people up at work asking me to bring mine in. I should adhere to their requests lol.

On another note, the other day I was out practicing some Shii-Cho kata and these 3 teens walked by. They must of been 16, 17 years old. Well needless to say they stopped and stared at me for a good minute before I said something. I could tell they were making fun of me by the snickers and the points, but I didn't care. And then the very next day one of the little girls over here around 5yrs old was fascinated by my saber and asked if she could stay and watch me. She was sweet and polite and I explained to her what it was and what exactly I was doing. I told her that I would be back out later that night to practice with my brother once it got dark out. Sure enough she was waiting by her window after the sun went down and cheered me on from her room!

The moral and point of this story is, Yes, you will have people that poke fun and laugh at you b/c you have a lightsaber. And this could have happened 100 times, but that one interested lil girl is what trumps all the negative. I love my saber and I love to enlighten all those inspiring young jedi/sith :)

And this is why carrying your lightsaber is worth it  ;D

Darkside point for apparent mastery of said dark side. 'Tightness leads to Pain' Pain leads to Anger, Anger leads to Hate... lol Some one should make a demotivational poster out of that and hang it near department store dressing rooms.  ;D

A point for an amazing idea which i might try

I have people up at work asking me to bring mine in. I should adhere to their requests lol.

On another note, the other day I was out practicing some Shii-Cho kata and these 3 teens walked by. They must of been 16, 17 years old. Well needless to say they stopped and stared at me for a good minute before I said something. I could tell they were making fun of me by the snickers and the points, but I didn't care. Well said! I get free stuff all the time when people notice my lightsaber, but I also get the occasional rude person. I was in boot barn yesterday and I had a group of girls see my lightsaber... One of them was adamantly disgusted by it lol, which just cracked me up. I am married to a gorgeous woman, so I don't really care, but I get a lot of female attention that I don't want, so sometimes it's nice to get the typical "nerd" treatment.

My thing is, I really don't care what other people think about my lightsaber... I like that it keeps fake people away from me, and I like that it reminds me who I am, and where I come from. If people can't accept that... I don't need them in my life.

It doesn't really do anything in my bag except look pretty, but every time I look at it I am reminded that I need to practice with it for at least 45min-1 hour a day. I so wish I could wear my Shock when it arrives at work, but at least if I keep it in my bag, I know it's there.  As a plus, there is a Fillipino weapon called a dolu-dolu (I think this is the correct spelling, I've never seen the word written down) that is a small hand held striking/raking weapon that I use and carry.  A bladeless saber hilt could nicely double as one in terms of use, so it really is a weapon in it's own right.  I have said that any shopping trips to cities other than my home town will result in me wearing my saber in public.

I am fairly familiar with Fillipino weapons but that name is unknown to me...no surprise there as each island tends to adopt local names for everything  :)

Is it a hand weapon like a kubutan?

It'll have to be something that fits the style (aka fits in next to empty mortar shells), so perhaps something more weathered...

Actually my now-customized original saber would look badass on there:

actually a buddy and i were just discussing earlier the best way to carry a whackload of sabers to the park for when we get a bunch of people going out, ended up deciding on a hardshell rifle case from cabellas

works out to like 35$ plus taxes, should be able to fit maybe 6 non basic hilts (ie thinks like consular, guardian, war glaive etc) or 8 of the more basic US designs in, with blades already attatched

foam lined case so they should stay nice and snug in there as well

Title: Re: Carrying Your Saber.
Post by: Darth Skiorh on April 12, 2012, 10:45:25 AM
@Veldryne...
Could you post pictures of that case with sabers inside please if you get one?  I have been wondering how to transport mine easily, and if the blades can stay in, even better.  I don't like mucking with those blade retention grubscrews too often.

Title: Re: Carrying Your Saber.
Post by: Veldryne on April 12, 2012, 02:39:59 PM
Will do, as soon as the new saber come in and we get them in the case.

One of them will hold two ar-15 rifles with suppressor and optics on, usually leaving room for a pistol or two so sabers really shouldn't be an issue.

Just saying it out loud before you get arrested...you are considering carrying a rifle case into a city park...perhaps you might be wearing a dark robe or mostly black...OMG!  lol

The next story is how you had to sit in jail overnight as your lawyer worked out the details of your probation and community service...and you are required to 100 yards away from all parks, playgrounds, and schools   :)

Kidding of course, but the image made me laugh a bit   ::)

This actually sounds like a really cool idea. Star Wars has really helped me be a better person. Well, the Jedi have, anyway  :) Having suffered from autism disorder and severe depression I found the will to go on thanks to the teachings of the Jedi. I know that may sound strange, but its the truth. I tend to keep Jedi teachings in the back of my head in case I ever feel down.

Also, are the covertec clip / wheel on the Ultra Sabers website reliable? I only ask because the last time I used a clip the lightsaber got loose and fell. Than again, that was just a mere Hasbro toy, haha.

It's excellent that the Jedi ways have influenced you life in such a positive way.  They have definitely gotten me through some of my more aggrivating moments.

I'm sure the covertec clips work fine btw.  Ultrasabers wouldn't sell them if they didn't!  Besides, they look EXACTLY like the one I have, and that one fits my Consular perfectly.

I have to remember that my FX blade hasn't been sent in just yet. Am converting the Vader FX model to an Ultra-edge Heavy Grade blade. :D

Am I weird for choosing the Consular Green for the Vader hilt? o.O

Indeed it will!

I like the Vader with CG, it's gonna look fantastic.  I'm still looking to get an ESB Vader hilt and have it converted, perhaps with one of my greenish cyan LEDs...

Anyway, points for the Jacen/Caedus saber ;)

Same here, been carrying my overlord everywhere for almost 2 months now, no one at works thinks it unusall, for me anyways lol. I've been expecting somekind of reaction from people in town, but up until last weekend, no one said a word or even looked at me funny. Then I get 2 people asking about it and I point them towards US with a hint that if I could find a couple other people I'd start up a saber club. We shall see...

Heh, the saber club startup wasnt a problem. At least 7 regulars for now just in the last month and a half, with more people getting interested....

I bring my saber hilt with me everywhere I go. It's in my backpack and when I am at work, it sits on my desk, like so:

The rest of the time, it's with me in my truck or at my house. This hilt is never far from my grasp.

I don't understand the question... Are we not supposed to carry our sabers around with us wherever we go?

Yeah, the Raven would be dangerous to carry around regardless... Those claws might get you a little more attention than you want lol.

I dont carry mine around everywhere but since i have been building them for awhile have taken them all over the place friends used to make fun of me quite a bit till i told them i would literally knock them out with my saber yeah i can get a little violent when it comes to my hobby, now they all want me to build them one lol it sux living in a small town i dont build for people who make fun of the hobby though. Its funny that people will joke and ridicule but put a saber in their hands and watch smile go from ear to ear lol

Just for the record.. aside of a Star Wars movie or a convention... why would anyone want to carry a modified flashlight with him all day :)

I just saw some modern day jedi being interviewed on YouTube and they are slightly losing their grip on reality.

I carry my saber with me as a symbol.  My philosophical, moral, and religious (if you can call them that) beliefs have much in common with Jedi philosophy, as they both have strong roots in several major and ancient religions and philosophical ideals.   Words do not lose their truth on varied lips.  So while the source material in this case is a sci-fi universe, the ethical, social and political content all comes from very real ideologies.  As such, it could be argued that the Star Wars (expanded) universe has affected the way I perceive and persevere the nature of this world.  It may be true in some, and likely many cases that extreme fans who develop an obsession can mimic and recite these qualities without true understanding, which is a shapeless detriment to the credibility of those who believe.  My experience has been largely more spiritual than others, I daresay, though belief and dedication are the notable elements here, not the nature of the practice.

Being mindful of the no religious discussion rule... I too wear my lightsaber as a symbol of my beliefs. Though it takes me a little while to explain that to people. Star Wars has influenced me to be a better person, and stick to my beliefs no matter what.

Star Wars was also what helped me get my temper under control, that combined with martial arts training.

So it's not at all unusual, I believe there are a few members here with similar stories.

I see that here and there as I peruse the forum, most notably in your posts thus far, Lucien; an honor to meet you.  I've found a small circle of close friends with similar convictions, but on the norm, the shroud of misunderstanding is thick.

Before I came to these forums, and indeed before I found US, I was an EXTREMELY angry person. I still am to some point.

The community here, as well as US, has helped me more than ANY of you will ever know. Yes, I do embrace the Dark Side in a lot of my posts. A lot of it is for fun. Some of it isn't.

For those of you who have seen The Avengers, do you remember throughout the movie how Captain America keeps asking Bruce Banner about how he keeps The Hulk under control? He kept hammering him to reveal his so-called secret. And in the end, the secret was really very simple: He was always angry.

That's me. I live with anger day in and day out. In the beginning, it controlled me. I lost myself in that anger and rage, and I lost many good friends. Over time, I learned to control it. I became me again, albeit a bit more vocal, stronger, and more passionate.

My saber is a symbol of my triumph.

That story sounds incredibly familiar... My dad was just talking with me the other day about how angry I was as a child. There were a few times I laid out my brother in law (who was quite older than I was) I spent my whole life in fear of what would happen if I lost my temper on someone. So when I got picked on in elementary school through Jr High. I never fought back. I was too afraid, not of what would happen to me, but of what would happen to them.

Then I became a Star Wars fan, and I was all about being in control of my anger, then I became a martial artist, and I learned what I could do with my body. Suddenly I wasn't worried about anything any more. I had control, and that gave me confidence.

The Marine Corps admittedly set me back a bit... My anger has surfaced back up again, but not as much as when I was young, but it's always there, it always will be. It's just how much control I exercise over it.

Glad I met you dude we seem to have much in common. Aside from the whole "your a Sith" part lol

I was a pretty calm dude for a Marine Corporal, but back in the day I was kind of mean compared to now. The one thing I always tried to do in the Corps was not yell. I was yelled at all the time before I had rank and I became numb to it. As such, I wanted people to think that the apocalypse was at hand if I was yelling, not just go, "Oh look, he's yelling again." Jedi teachings have really mellowed me out, I find, and I'm particularly chill with a saber in my hand since I never want to set a bad example.

If I were a Jedi, I would have fallen long ago.

Without dropping in too much personal information and drama, I have just a small story to tell. As a kid, I was always bullied. I got into fights all of the time. Being the white boy as a minority in SoCal made it hard. I never fought back, simply for the same reasons Lucien stated. I was afraid.

While I was deployed to Iraq, my wife of 17 years decided to end our marriage.

My anger and rage springs from many other sources, and for a long time, I was on a downward spiral of self destruction. Now, Ultra Sabers and this community did not single handedly turn that around. To say something like that would be vain, arrogant, and just plain silly. But it DID help focus me onto something positive.

In this last year of being alone, I have learned a lot about myself as a person. A lot that I had lost over the years. I dedicated myself to my marriage and had forgotten who I was. The anger and the fear that I had felt truly did lead to the Dark Side, if such a thing exists.

But learning to focus those energies into something positive like saber combat, then being accepted by a community like this, just makes me proud.

Lucien, I too am glad that we met. I look forward to our future meetings. And to the rest of you, I am also glad to have met you.

Now, back on subject: I carry my saber with me (it's next to me at work as I type this). My co-workers cannot wait until Halloween when we have our costume contest as I will be doing a lightsaber routine. I promised to win the contest this year. And that's a promise I intend to keep!

I also have a kind of anger problem, though mine is cold, never hot, bitter and without a target, produced more by the despair and pain of all those around me, and in myself, the pain that is a part of this world as much as the joy.  and that anger too, is a part of me.  but just a part.  Most of my friends traveled darker paths, like it seems you have.  That's why Obi-wan is my favorite.  He too came from a background where he walked the edge in his own way, anger causing him to almost miss every opportunity to become a knight until the force "forced" its hand.  Every time he has triumphed over a sith, he has resorted to barbaric, and forbidden strikes.  And yet, he becomes, as many would agree, the iconic Jedi for the Republic.  I got my Archon v2 because it resembles his final saber design, which he calls "satisfyingly elegant.".

You may have fallen long ago, but I'd say you are well on your path to redemption. This community is fantastic, I have had some great interactions with various members already, abd someday hope to meet as many of you as I can.

May the force be with you all.

As one having his share of being bullied too... and getting on top of the anger from it through martial arts I totally understand and respect your believs.

I just had to be the voice of cold reason for a minute to see how people look at it. And to show how many will be looking at it from afar.

I love this forum... The members are great. Thanks all...
