So I fight with a sword and shield combat form.

I wanted to know if anyone had any ideas about making or how to make a lightsaber proof shield?

Use Mandalorian Iron, thats some sturdy stuff. Maybe Songsteel if your looking for something lighter. But in true honesty I have no idea what would be able to withstand the polycarbonate blades, unless you made one out of polycarbonate

but If your talking about an Ultra Saber then I would recommend Polycarbonate or some sort of metal.  maybe even wood with some sort of padding cut and spread over it.

It's not that i can't make one...it's just...how to make look.....star wars like.
I have plenty of FiberGlass and wood shields i just can't think of how to make them either glow (like a lightsaber) or look metallic.

The only shield I can personally think of is the GunGan Shield, But I doubt your character is a gungan.

I was thinking in the lines of this, just maybe more buckler like, and run some LEDs around the edge to give the shield some glow  ;D

Yeah. That could work. The shield that i use is a 2'6' diameter round shield. I could layer it with a sheet of purple plastic maybe then add the LED's...

    There are a ton of different materials that glow: plastics, foams, paints even powders.  The light coming off the saber would keep the shield charged.

    Chemical: you can paint the shield with activated glowstick liquid.  cheap and easy and can be redone as needed just watch out for glass shards on clothing.  I use a mesh splatter screen for a filter now.

    Got me on how to rig a LED to make it glow and still survive a beating.  I'm sure a photo only shield would be easy to do.

You gotta be kidding me... is that really a Captain America airsoft shield?  I NEED ONE!

The idea of a light shield has come up before in the lightsaber community, but no one ever mentioned buying an already pre-built shield. The first shield looks like it could be rigged up pretty easy with some high-powered leds. Nice find  :)

Thanks! we use four of them side by side for hallway and room clearing for airsoft. with a 3inch by 3inch square dremelled out for a firing port for sidearms ^_^.

Gets pretty heavy to carry after a while, but for airsoft we are also usually wearing 30+lbs of gear and guns and magazines

For dueling with a US you should be fine.

That's awesome. I think I might get one of these. Either way i'll have to move the handles. Take them away and place one dead-center. But these are great.

IRL I use a gutted Captain America, disc launcher shield.

I padded the back so that it would be comfortable to wear.

I dunno how cheap it'd be, but if you got hold of some EL wire and put it in the shield, it'd be ok.

OR:  Rig a shield with side glow fiberoptic cable covering the surface, and then have LED's mounted behind the shield to provide light.

OR:  Learn to dodge.   ;D  Jk.

EL-wire is fairly affordable on eBay - it's not the brightest stuff but if you had it go around the border of your shield it might look cool - and it would make sense in-universe that a shield rimmed with some kind of saber-blade tech would deflect saber blows, at least from the rim.

EL-wire is pretty skinny though, Google "EL-tape" however and you might be pleasantly surprised.  I haven't looked into pricing for that stuff yet - seems like it would cost more than traditional EL-wire but you could probably rig some pretty cool stuff with it.

Wow...this stuff is sick...But can it handle some serious sparring blows. Like the kind that you would need a heavy grade blade for....

should be fine if you put it on the back of the shield, using one of those lexan airsoft shields i linked prior in the thread

I've used EL tape for one of my custom Tron Legacy costumes (and EL wire for a Original Tron costume).  The Tape isn't too expensive, but the power packs get a little large (and costlier) depending on the length of the tape.

Volund, would love to see a Tron: Legacy costume - any place I can check yours out?

A simple shield design of your choice with four layers.

The inside layer with grips/straps

The base layer made of plexiglass

The conduit layer...a sheet of plexiglass or light diffuser material

The outer layer, a tough or easy to replace clear cover (plexiglass or polycarb sheet)

(you could use one thick piece, but these are expensive...I would think that the thin layers would be easier to replace if need be)


Within the inner radius of the conduit layer place your light source...I suspect a DC driven light rope...set with a foil backing...seal the outer edge to force all light into the conduit layer.

It should light up nicely.

I'm most likely nerco posting here...  but in clone wars the clone war's the death watch  had mini shields on there left hand... mostly to deflect  blast but also strong enough to stop sabers
