Title: Make up suggestions. Post by: KrystheSith on April 20, 2012, 09:22:40 PM I'm going to do a trial make up run in the beginning of next week, I have a couple of ideas on how I want to do the "tattoos" for my zabrak look, but I was curious if any of you had a look you might want to see. I'm only doing it in black and red, those are the only colors I have available right now.
Title: Re: Make up suggestions. Post by: Darth Cestual on April 20, 2012, 10:13:25 PM I'm sure given some time I could come up with several looks for ya.

Title: Re: Make up suggestions. Post by: Master Lucien Kane on April 21, 2012, 01:01:17 AM Something like this (http://nwn.blogs.com/.a/6a00d8341bf74053ef015437a74677970c-320wi) Or this, but obviously in red/black. (http://hawtpantsrepublic.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/knight.jpg) Or this perhaps (my personal favorite) (http://i459.photobucket.com/albums/qq315/zf6hellion/Venisara-1.jpg) Title: Re: Make up suggestions. Post by: Master Rel on April 21, 2012, 01:21:36 AM It may sound silly but take a piece of red paper, 8.5x11, fold length ways, then add a few random blobs of cheap black acrylic paint on one side, make a couple swipes, refold, press, and open :)

Title: Re: Make up suggestions. Post by: ed_ification on April 21, 2012, 06:09:58 AM I'd make a stencil, if possible, so that you can make it the same every time.
Title: Re: Make up suggestions. Post by: Darth Skiorh on April 21, 2012, 07:30:18 AM Great, now I'm staring at those blots psychoanalyising myself.
Title: Re: Make up suggestions. Post by: Master Lucien Kane on April 21, 2012, 07:47:57 AM I see a butterfly, General Grievous, and a predator lol
What's the diagnosis doc? Title: Re: Make up suggestions. Title: Re: Make up suggestions. Post by: Darth Skiorh on April 21, 2012, 01:07:21 PM I'm worried about the butterfly...all of the others are normal:P
Title: Re: Make up suggestions. Post by: Veldryne on April 21, 2012, 01:15:33 PM what are you using for makeup? for any black i would highly recommend camo paint
http://www.surpluspontrouge.com/en/search/paint/camo-face-paint-o-d-and-black/default/ (http://www.surpluspontrouge.com/en/search/paint/camo-face-paint-o-d-and-black/default/) its designed not to come off when you sweat and a lot of times (depending on how much you do sweat while wearing it) retains a matte finish even if you are prespiring, so itll stay looking fairly even throughout the day Title: Re: Make up suggestions. Title: Re: Make up suggestions. Post by: Master Lucien Kane on April 21, 2012, 02:29:17 PM you wish to be born anew as a droid commander and hunt down jedi? No but I do wish to do battle with a Droid commander that hunts Jedi! I'm worried about the butterfly...all of the others are normal:P Funny you should mention that, the butterfly was the concerning factor for me as well. Title: Re: Make up suggestions. Post by: Master Rel on April 21, 2012, 03:35:15 PM Some of the interesting aspects of the inkblot test are the other parameters you may not realize...the time it takes to respond, the facial reactions (did you smile, look away, frown, etc.), did you hesitate to respond, etc.
It is a test of reactions far more than responses. Usually the moth is a second guess to the butterfly, showing a lack of confidence or seeking the approval of others. But by itself it is just an answer. You do not see the real answers until the right person is interviewing you...there are initial questions to set the mind in motion first, then questions meant to incite emotional vulnerability, etc. Then you review the inkblots. Once in this disarmed state you may see different images and depending on your personal issues you may see what you need to see, or in this case say...like "my mother's face" (because she died and you did not grieve or the like. Inkblots...who would have thunk it right? ;D Title: Re: Make up suggestions. Title: Re: Make up suggestions. Post by: KrystheSith on April 21, 2012, 05:24:52 PM I plan on making stencils. Like I said this is just a test run, and I'm using airbrush makeup, so stencils are even more useful. Very clean lines. I might do the make up similar to one of those pictures you posted.
I use the red first, and do an all around even coating, then I rim my water line with black, and stencil on the "tattoos" however, I don't have the colored contacts yet, as they're only good for three months, and I want to use them in august, september, and october. So I won't be ordering them until late July, unless I decide to order two seperate pairs. Title: Re: Make up suggestions. Post by: KrystheSith on April 21, 2012, 05:53:30 PM Well this time I'm going to use cardboard, but eventually, when I make it to the craft store, I'll be getting the plastic sheets (the size of paper) and cutting the stencils out of them with an exacto knife. If I like this stencil I'll keep it and use it to mark my plastic stencil.
Title: Re: Make up suggestions. Post by: Master Rel on April 21, 2012, 11:14:13 PM Cardboard is going to be a tough stencil material...hard to bend and seal the edges.
I have used a thin solvent proof plastic material for stencils...much like these (http://cdn.dickblick.com/items/269/27/26927-1070-3ww-l.jpg) Title: Re: Make up suggestions. Post by: KrystheSith on April 22, 2012, 03:52:14 AM With the airbrush, I don't really need super exact stencils, I'm decent with it free hand, so I'm going to use the stencil as a start, and finish it with free hand. For now at least. Like I said this is just a test run.

Krys, I can't wait to see your Sith getup....
Two... Jedi Relmeob... is there anything you can't do? I swear you're like the Jack of all trades, master of all. Quit showing off so much! lol ;) Title: Re: Make up suggestions. Post by: KrystheSith on April 22, 2012, 06:29:58 AM Indeed! It's very intimidating! I feel like if I mess up you'll tell me "I told you so." haha!

I swear you're like the Jack of all trades, master of all. Quit showing off so much! lol ;) Actually I have a fairly rare brain disorder, limited ability to sleep and a serious need to learn everything about a subject to catches my attention...it is the way I am wired...while everyone else was out partying I was in the dojo, or making a prop/sculpture, or studying some subject or another. In the end you have this laundry list of experiences, training, and knowledge...not so many friends lol...it is a tough line trying to balance both...I have meds now to slow it all down, but that is fairly recent...but yeah it does lay out like an adventure novel sometimes lol. That and I got started early...out of the house on my own at 16yrs old, joined military at 17yrs old (judge's order)...so it all adds up after 46yrs :) Title: Re: Make up suggestions. Post by: Darth Skiorh on April 22, 2012, 06:57:38 AM @Krysthesith...please post photos of how it turns out, I would be very interested to see the finished product:)
@Jedi Relmeob...I can empathise with you on that...when I get into something, I REALLY get into it. Trouble is, there are so many things that catch my attention, I feel like I need 10 lifetimes to experience and learn about them all. Hmmm...maybe I should start experimenting with Sith Alchemy..... Title: Re: Make up suggestions. Post by: Master Rel on April 22, 2012, 07:02:29 AM ...maybe I should start experimenting with Sith Alchemy..... And another walks into the quicksand... ::) Title: Re: Make up suggestions. Post by: Darth Skiorh on April 22, 2012, 07:38:59 AM heh! I don't walk into quicksand, I jump in at full flight with a squeal of glee:P
Title: Re: Make up suggestions. Post by: Veldryne on April 22, 2012, 01:28:20 PM So Wes janson as a sith?
Title: Re: Make up suggestions. Post by: Master Lucien Kane on April 22, 2012, 05:32:04 PM heh! I don't walk into quicksand, I jump in at full flight with a squeal of glee:P Yeah but you're Australian... Aren't you guys used to dealing with things like Drop bears? Jeez, nothing would scare me after that either. Title: Re: Make up suggestions. Post by: KrystheSith on April 22, 2012, 05:46:51 PM I'm going to be recording myself putting on the make up, and take pictures of the whole costume, at least everything I have so far. I haven't gotten my latex kit in yet, so I don't have the horns to try on, or the wig either. It hasn't come in yet. So I'm missing a few things. Hopefully my hair doesn't blend into my skin too much, haha. (I have bright red hair right now.) I plan to record my Raven un-boxing in costume. haha. So there should be two videos up from me Tuesday, or Wednesday depending on how long the editing takes.
Title: Re: Make up suggestions. Post by: Master Rel on April 22, 2012, 06:48:01 PM Should be cool!
Title: Re: Make up suggestions. Post by: KrystheSith on April 22, 2012, 08:48:53 PM I hope so!
Title: Re: Make up suggestions. Post by: Master Rel on April 22, 2012, 10:04:24 PM Try to make it with the time elapsed factor...those are fun to watch as the change is quicker and thus more dramatic :)
Title: Re: Make up suggestions. Post by: KrystheSith on April 22, 2012, 10:16:01 PM Yeah I'd planned on that, with voice over. :)
Title: Re: Make up suggestions. Post by: KrystheSith on April 23, 2012, 11:50:24 PM So.. my latex, clay... all of that came in today... so I'm sculpting my first set of horns, if I get them done for tomorrow I'll apply them (unpainted) to my make up! Yay! I'm pretty excited. (And I smell like clay.)
Title: Re: Make up suggestions. Post by: KrystheSith on April 23, 2012, 11:50:59 PM And how do you guys feel about a chipped forehead horn? I was thinking it might make me stand out a little so that they don't just look like... well normal latex horns haha.
Title: Re: Make up suggestions. Post by: ed_ification on April 24, 2012, 12:21:45 AM And how do you guys feel about a chipped forehead horn? I was thinking it might make me stand out a little so that they don't just look like... well normal latex horns haha. I think that if a Zabrak had a chipped horn, there'd be a scar to go with it. But a chipped horn isn't a bad idea, especially for a Sith costume... Title: Re: Make up suggestions. Post by: Master Rel on April 24, 2012, 12:28:16 AM Sounds cool...but as a young lady with all that wanting to look good and such, wouldn't she (the character) trim, shape, and in other ways keep the horns all cosmetically the best?
What might be fun is to pierce one of them, put a small chain from the horn to nose or ear...something like this (http://29.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_l2wc4icWkS1qbiu9lo1_500.jpg) (http://26.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lsiq91b4l21r3ggyoo1_500.jpg) (http://light.sunphoto.ro/photos/normal/43876780_FHBATWIZL.jpg) Title: Re: Make up suggestions. Post by: KrystheSith on April 24, 2012, 12:59:50 AM That's a good idea, I'm also already considering getting my nose pierced, so thanks for the extra nudge in that direction. haha!
Title: Re: Make up suggestions. Post by: Master Rel on April 24, 2012, 01:09:14 AM Glad to help!
Maybe instead of piercing the horns, use tips like the ones on these knife scabbards (http://www.oriental-arms.com/photos/items/65/000165/ph-0.jpg) (http://www.oriental-arms.com/photos/items/09/003809/ph-0.jpg) (http://www.oriental-arms.co.il/photos/items/40/001640/ph-0.jpg) Title: Re: Make up suggestions. Post by: KrystheSith on April 24, 2012, 01:13:37 AM If I can figure out the materials, and have the time/money. I might just do that. I still have to buy the belt/pouches/scabbard, and contacts for my costume.
Title: Re: Make up suggestions. Post by: KrystheSith on April 24, 2012, 01:19:05 AM Also... The placement of the horns I'm making tonight... I also want a crown of six in the wig I'm going to be making. This will vary depending on how well the horns come out.
(http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a51/Iamsquishy1n2/horns.jpg) Title: Re: Make up suggestions. Post by: Master Rel on April 24, 2012, 01:37:05 AM With your hair involved as well as the details of the tattoos I would take the idea that less is more...you may be getting seriously close to the Clutter Zone...any chance to attach a pair or two to hair appliances like barrettes to extend the whole array and keep from clustering on your face?
As for the metal bits, those are easy to make at home...when and if you want to I can walk you through the process...easy peasy. Title: Re: Make up suggestions. Post by: KrystheSith on April 24, 2012, 03:44:41 AM Well the six are going on a crown, and the three over each eye brow are going to replace my eyebrows, because I'm going to cover them. At least that's the original idea. Like I said I'm going to play around and find a look I like. haha. What kinds of materials would I need to cover the tips of the horns?
Title: Re: Make up suggestions. Post by: Master Rel on April 24, 2012, 04:15:26 AM There are a couple ways...the way I would favor leads down a road strife with sharp edges and cut fingertips...so let us consider the less grief filled path.
Index cards $1 gold spray paint from Mal-Wart :) $1 black craft paint Aluminum foil Stapler First shape the card into a right sized mini cone, mark connection line, then draw you fancy edges, cut edges and punch holes, reshape, staple, wrap in foil, shape and press holes in foil (wrap edges to give grip), spray with gold, let dry to a tacky stage, rub softly with paper towel, let dry. Once dry coat in black paint, rub off excess. You will have iron/brass look for pennies. ;D Title: Re: Make up suggestions. Post by: KrystheSith on April 24, 2012, 10:52:45 PM Alas, the last day and a half have been nothing, but failures for me in the costume department. I put too much water in the hydrocal so it didn't dry fast enough, so no horns. And my airbrush was acting funny so I tried to do my make up anyway, and one mess up after another I gave up and took a shower. My saber did show up, so I recorded me opening it in my costume. Tonight after it's dark I'll record more and try to get some pictures up with my costume.
Title: Re: Make up suggestions. Post by: KrystheSith on April 25, 2012, 01:43:57 AM Posted the video to the video forum.
Title: Re: Make up suggestions. Post by: Master Rel on April 25, 2012, 02:10:42 AM Hydrocal is fairly easy to work with.
It is meant to be used as a slurry. Did you use tepid tap water or hot water...hot water will shorten the soak time and quicken the cure. It sounds like you may have been too excited and skipped the soaking stage...the soak is an important stage. Measure 1:1, but do not just dump and mix. In a third container, I like a smooth rounded bottom soup bowl as it has no edges and makes mixing bien mieux ;D Start with a small amount of powder in bowl, say a 1/5th or 1/4th, add some water and mix completely. It will be loose, but it will be easier to mix if you have this loose plaster juice, add a little bit of powder to the loose batch until it gets thick, then add a small bit of water, just enough to loosen the mix...continue until all the powder is in the bowl, you can leave a little water out and add it as the mix soaks or saturates. This hydration starts the process but let it sit for a couple minutes, keep slowly stirring, adding a touch of water (remember it was measured out so you can't add to much...it is how and when you add it) to keep it loose. Then when it starts to feel like oatmeal, pour, tap to release air bubbles. If you live somewhere hot and fairly dry, put it in direct sun, if not then in the sun on a shelf behind a window, or just let it set. A fan on it will help pull excess moisture out and away. If you find it too loose in the mold, pour it out into your bowl and add a touch more powder stir and pour again...keep in mind that this mix will be "hot" or curing so do not wait around, pour. Best of luck and success :) Title: Re: Make up suggestions. Post by: Infantrymyers on May 04, 2012, 02:14:15 AM I see a butterfly, General Grievous, and a predator lol What's the diagnosis doc? strange i saw 2 hornets facing each other but that could be my fear of stinging insects |
