Title: Dark Jedi Cosplay - Picture Heavy
Post by: Luniara on April 23, 2012, 08:47:45 PM
This will be my first post here and what better topic to post than in the very area that started my need for a lightsaber in the first place! While I wait for my first lightsaber, having chosen the V2 Initiate with a Sun Riders Destiny LED (simplistic so  I may mod it to silmilar to what I had already designed: http://www.evil-wizards.org/swtor-wiki/images/6/69/Luniara_Saber-1.jpg (http://www.evil-wizards.org/swtor-wiki/images/6/69/Luniara_Saber-1.jpg)) I will share with you what I have so far... if you don't mind the babble!

The beginning of the year (a bit after the launch of SWTOR) I decided to cosplay my Dark Jedi/Sith! With a design already in place for her,  I got to work.

Here's the base design I sketched to work off of:

From there I had the tunic, obi and wraps made (under shirt there for placement - acquired):

The wig (to be sewed into with dark hair extensions -  acquired):
(http://i.ebayimg.com/t/NEW-WOMEN-S-white-LONG-curly-Cosplay-FULL-WIG-DSCN0446-/00/s/ODAwWDUyMw==/$(KGrHqR,!h4E8J8)QdQFBPUJbRO97g~~60_3.JPG)

Gloves  (acquired):

Boots  (acquired):
(http://i.ebayimg.com/t/Jedi-steampunk-brown-boots-/00/s/NTAwWDQ3OQ==/$(KGrHqV,!jcE8FTVvZT3BPRSb)fdWQ~~60_12.JPG)

Bodysuit (acquired):

and since my characters eyes would not fully be "Sith" - a mix of aqua and blue:

Then there's your regular black leggings which... as a girl, I already should own.

The face make up and hair styling will probably be the hardest part. Contouring, pale skin, bags under the eyes, etc. are quite  time consuming. Not to mention, managing to keep a steady hand on the chin tattoo.

Very nice designs, and the costume looks great so far! Sort of makes me think Iceheart as an Emperor's Hand or some such, which is cool. I always thought she was a villain with an interesting look. Also love that you're doing a Sith/Dark Jedi and going with an SRD and the matching eyes with just a hint of yellow. Should make for a very different sith.

Oh, and of course, welcome to the forum! ;D

That is definitely a cool idea for a costume... I especially like the gloves!  Plus the idea of a dark jedi with a SRD saber just sounds fascinating, I love when people use nonstandard colors in that way.

Welcome!

Yes, and the sort of reverse of that with the hair on this costume reminded me of that, as well as the unusual eyes (though Iceheart had one red and one blue, not two aqua). It's sort of just a similar overall feel and impression I get. Like 'I'm human, but I won't hesitate to REALLY hurt somebody' kind of a thing. *shrug* Iceheart was pretty darn sithy, for not being one. lol

Okay, yeah i see what you are saying. Though Iceheart was way too controlled to really be sith, cruel yes, but not explosively emotional like sith are.

Looks great thus far!

Certainly a might farther along than most lol.

The only issue is the collar

Am I understanding right that the ruffled mess of a collar is a stand in?  Because the clean turtle neck in the design and uni look much better, if you are looking for opinions  :)

Thank you, Everyone! Forgive me, what is an "SRD saber"? I'm fairly new to that lingo.

The crinkly shirt under the tunic is not going to be there in the end result. it will be way tighter. If I get the time tomorrow, I'll slip it on and give you a look of how it will actually look. I'm glad someone noticed the yellow corruption in the contacts. I only wish I could get some red in there too.

Keep in mind, this is my Old Republic character. =D Avid SWTOR player. I googled "Iceheart" and she's pretty sweet (albeit old) looking.

SRD is short for Sunriders Destiny, referring to the color.

Oh and you play SWTOR?  Which server?  My buddy Artorius and I have a guild on Tarro Blood.

Welcome to the forums. Also this costume is going to be killer!

It's a little pricey for a makeup kit, but the Ben Nye makeup kit is a nice one, and you would be able to do all the applications you want to do with it.... The darker "corrupted" eyes, and the chin tattoo, which I love btw.

Very unique SWTOR based design, can't wait to see the finished result! Killer saber design as well, I like it, simple sleek and duel worthy.

You made a great choice in Sunrider's Destiny.  It has become my very favorite color as it photographs very well, definitely gets noticed, and has the appeal that you are cool, calm and collective but still mean business.  I cannot wait to see the finished product.  Also, welcome to the forum.

Thank you! I picked up my boots today and uh.. the bottoms fell right off. It's quite annoying knowing I did not even have them for a full day and only tried ONE on before the other went to shell. While the shoe shop said it would be only $15 to fix, I'm still peeved after leaving a nice review on the seller and gave him a tip. BAH!

I'll be picking up my boots on Saturday so I'll take a picture of what I have so far then. My lightsaber should be here on Tuesday. SO excited and anxious! I also purchased my contact lenses. <3

What's left now is to sew together my wig and as I said make up (waiting for seller to contact me when its back in stock)!

Were they 100yr old boots?

I have never heard of the soles falling off...if new, the seller should be beaten.

If it is an ebay thing then fail a claim and slam them/him...like a bug.

Yeah, Lemon laws protect the buyer from such things.  If soles fall off, those boots were not taken care of, and showed signs before being sold to you.  That should not, and any reputable dealer should be willing to exchange the product.

Well, he was a local ebay dealer so I said "frell it. I have no time for this guys incompetence" and paid the $15 to fix it. I highly doubt he had a duplicate of them so it's better to simply get it done myself. I told the seller and all he offered was a "oh wow, gosh- I didn't know. We bought them for a costume and never wore them."  - oh well.

I got them back this weekend and the repairman went ahead and even polished them for me. They are epic! Slightly big for my lady feet but that's what you get when you buy men's boots.

Anyways.. forgive my bulky-ness. I am no size 6.

Here it is without the gloves and a belt to go on top of the obi (and a surprise cat in the box) I have to get the robe and sash taken in... its far too long than I had wanted it to be. Maybe 4 inches?:

I'm getting a little scared to sew the black into the wig. I think after a good comb through I may figure it out.

QUACK!

Contact lenses should arrive in a week or two. =) I'll try those on for size and show you.

If the boots are too big for your feet, you can hurt yourself if you slide too much.  As it turns out, I have something of the same issue.  What you can do is get some form of strap and tighten it around your ankle around the outside of the boot, which will help hold everything in place.

And I call shenanigans on the seller not knowing.  If the soles fell off as soon as you put the shoes on, he had to have seen that when packing the boots for sending.  Shenanigans.

No need to forgive anything, we are the sum of our parts...few of us are and in some cases rarely ever were size 6's lol.  Truthfully it is within that most reflects without...wait til you hit 40 and your body starts to betray you lol.

Cat in the box...that is what boxes were made for right?  I like the length as is...it will allow movement while dueling, unless you are going for the bit'o leg look  :)

The wig...why not braid in anchors for you black to white?  Braid a few inches towards the skull cap and then white glue the ends.  The braid will bring it together cleanly, allow you an anchor point, and brings a touch of girly to the grrr of your costume  :)

Bulky-ness... where? I don't see any bulky-ness anywhere... Unless you meant the cat, and the cat also seems to be in great shape.... I swear all women have different eyes. I have to cover this with my wife constantly.

Okay let me just echo what some other people have said, be proud, and good Lord girl, who are you looking at to be apologizing for "bulky-ness"? I was just thinking last night how much society and certain guys really mess up gals' self-esteem. I will freely admit that I've not done a lot of dating, I've only been in three relationships and two of them were serious. Each of the three had a hard time or didn't believe me when I told them they were beautiful. Why? Because they were never told they were beautiful. Beauty is NOT a size! Beauty is not turning sideways and disappearing. Beauty is who you are; it is so much more than size. Look at Reubens' work and what he saw as beautiful. Also, (and yes, I watch musicals with my mom, sister and fiancée) check out what Queen Latifah asks in Hairspray, "Who wants a twig when you can have the whole **** tree?" having said that, you aren't even what I would classify as big. Learn to love yourself and realize that being happy with your own body is crucial. So many people (and I know I'm getting into general statements now), have no idea of the true value that they have. They don't realize that they are important. Back to personal comments, like Blue said, if they aren't double digits, they aren't in my book...though no one is in my book since getting engaged lol. My fiancée is certainly not tiny, but I think she is gorgeous. I don't want her to be a scrawny, rib poking out, stick. I'm still having a hard time convincing her of that, but she is making progress. Now she at least knows that I think she's beautiful.

Sorry for the rant, but without hitting on you, and making it perfectly clear that I am happily engaged, let me say that you are a beautiful gal, and you need to stop apologizing and instead be happy with who you are.

Hate to keep this derailed train moving, but I agree - no "bulkiness" that I can see.  You look totally fine, and that's coming from a dude with an incredibly cute gf ;)

Anyway, just to attempt to get it back on topic, let us know how those contacts turn out!  I've always been curious about how those are to wear (I wear contacts myself, but I've never tried the colored ones).

Post by: Master Rel on May 02, 2012, 02:14:54 PM
Bit of reality for you guys...being 46yrs old and seen the process over the years...your body will most likely betray you at some point, you will gain weight, change shape, etc.

All you have is what you are and who you are...the body is just a shell, the pearl is the prize.

My wife still does not get it either...you like or love someone for who they are or the emotion is just lust.

Anyway...I digress...the blue of the saber is a good one  :)

I am not used to such kindness on the internets!! Omg. Thank you! <3 Points for everyone!
The contacts shouldn't take too long I hope. I only wear glasses for nighttime driving or when I feel the need and I've only ever put ONE colored contact lenses in my eye and it took me a good 30 minutes only to realize the color wouldn't show up on my brown eyes. Knowing these will show up, I hope I get used to them quickly.

I'm excited to see how they'll look.

I have green eyes and bought a pair of yellow contacts for a different cosplay and they also gave me great trouble getting them in.  The color also hardly showed through at all, as the yellow was to transparent, even though my eyes aren't to dark of a green.  If the ones you bought work, I'd love to know where you got them so I could
Pick some up for myself.  Great work on the outfit and thanks :)

I was sure to check the reviews and look at pictures before I made the decision on what lenses to get. A friend of mine owned a the pair I wanted  already so it made it VERY easy when I saw her review of them.

Anyways, I bought them from:

http://www.kiwiberry1-collection.com (http://www.kiwiberry1-collection.com)

They're a Korean company so the lenses are generally made for "dark" colored eyes and are very vibrant. Warning... VERY girly website.

A great site for costume contacts is http://www.youknowit.com/. (http://www.youknowit.com/.)

I have no idea why they have that URL and their site looks cheesey, but they don't make these lenses, they retail them from many established brands.

I wear prescription contact lenses every day so all my costume lenses are prescription too - obviously being a regular lens wearer my eyes are already accustomed to having lenses in them.  I can put my lenses in without a mirror at this point.

The best choice for a strong colour are the ones that aren't transparent - although they don't look as natural (but hey, I'm Sith, I'm unnatural, right?).

The best tips I can give for lenses are:

- They can be hard to put in.  Try and keep your finger dryer than the inside of the lens - the lens will want to stick to whichever surface is wettest (in this case, you want that to be your eye).  Sometimes a drop of lens fluid inside the lens can help with putting them in.  (I haven't looked, but I'm willing to bet youtube has a million videos about putting in lenses)
- There are eye-drops specifically for use with contact lenses; - buy those, contacts are usually pretty conformable when you get used to them - unless they're drying out, then they suck, even for the most regular lens wearer.
- During the day you might notice a little bit of your peripheral vision will be cut off since you're literally viewing the world through a little hole resting on your eye.  At night, this won't be as pronounced since in the dark it's much harder to see the edges of the lens.  If it's tripping you out, go somewhere dark for a bit.
- This one should be obvious, but make sure your fingers are CLEAN whenever you mess with your lenses!

Also, if you're in Canada, http://www.clearlycontacts.ca (http://www.clearlycontacts.ca) is a great site for costume lenses, although they don't carry as many varieties during the non-halloween season.

Also a final P.S.: Girl, you look hot, don't ever apologize for anything (and I'm married, so I'm not saying that with an ulterior motive).

First of all, I love your outfit concept. You really put a lot of thought and hard work into it, and it shows. Points to you for that.

Second, not to continue to derail this thread any further than it already has, but I want to echo what everyone else has said. No bulkiness to be seen anywhere. You are exquisitely beautiful. My jaw dropped when I saw your pictures, and I think my heart stopped for a moment.  :-[

Please keep us in the loop with your costume! Mine is coming along nicely. I ordered some stuff from Twin Roses and Mystik Merchants. Picked up my boots and pants today. All I have left is to get shin and wrist wraps and some sort of shin guards for armor, and I will be complete.

To echo the rest of the guys again, yeah no bulkiness. Most

I will totally find someone to duel with! I do know the South Florida sector of the 501st will be there and my guildie is coming down to the con dressed as her Imperial Agent sniper so many pictures are to be had!

2 more weeks!

The cosplay should definately be done by next week. My guildie that is cosplaying as her Agent is going to help me fix/style the wig the night before. I noticed the wig was made to go a certain way so some of it is very "bare" and you can see the cap of it. Kind of sucks but now I'm too close to con to buy an extra wig to sew on to make it thicker.

gonna see about putting the entire cosplay together this weekend and see how it looks so far. IF my eyes are willing to work with me so easily.

My Husband sucks at taking photos so I'm afraid 98% of my photos from this weekend are blurry, mid-way between me laughing or turning my head. It made me realize I definitely need to hem the tunic though. I end up having the appearance of having 'no knee' syndrome. This weekend!!!

Here's some make up shots though:

My cat is apparently not impressed.

My cats name? Basil. Darth Basil!

As I said though, my husband took some not so good photos of the entire get up. Half of them are me laughing, hiding my face and looking quite quirky like I ate a lemon.

I'm back from con and I'm... so very tired! Met A LOT of guys who had Ultra Sabers (more.. impressive ones than the one I have but now I know my next saber is gonna be an EPIC ONE!!!!)

I hope you all like them.

So... I'm back from con and I actually have photos to show. While I utterly apologize if I look awful (I gained 10 lbs and can't shake it), I had a lot of fun with Vahmung, Minali and Raynala! Met a few cool Sith, recruited, ran into a Jedi and a Fallen aaand just had people dawn over my cosplay, asking for photos (after I finally got a chance to get up from my art table and walk...)

So... forgive the photo dump! I'll just post the SW related ones for now. No sense in posting EVERYTHING. My wig was getting crazy tangled towards the end.

Prepping for Saturday!:

EPIC guy promoting another con. He had made his lightsaber out of pipe parts:

Yeeeh!

Yeah... enough of that, I know you want regular photos:

EPIC Sith EVAR! I continuously ran into him and people took our photos together. He came back to my table later out of costume and chatted with Minali, myself and Vah for a good 20 minutes. Pat our recruitment officer on the back. She really is trying to get him on our server. Did I mention he has an Ultrasaber?

I'm very impressed with your photos. You look very good in your outfit. I like the white hair. There's something about the white that brings out sexy. I think it might go back to Storm from X-Men for me, but yeah, white hair is good looking.

Great job! Can't wait to get the finishing pieces for mine!

July 12 thru July 15! SDCC!

I don't have tickets this year, but I am still going. Seeing as how I live 10 minutes away from the convention center, I figure I'll dress up and drop on by. Take some pictures. And follow the masses to the after parties!!

Yeah i wanted to go, but we might not even be living in winnipeg by then, which would suck.

They have 3 one hour blocks set aside each day of the con for lightsaber duels. But most of the ppl that do it, have no idea how to use a blade properly, are not in the shape to really do any kind of demo, and they all use force fx sabers.

My group was going to go en mass in costume and spin some heads.

Off-topic: Honestly, I must concur with the others who said you are absolutely stunning. I am normally not one to voice my opinion as to others appearances (as I figure people have the right to be how they wish to be), but in this situation I must say again you are stunning. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and if someone can't appreciate a woman for who she is as a person, then it's there loss. To me personally, attractive is not physical appearance, so much as how someone "carries" them self. Poor choice of words I know, but to me most of what makes attractiveness is your attitude. Now that being said, there is nothing wrong with modesty either, and that's really all I have to say about that. Oh yeah and remember, "those who know me, like me well, those who don't can bite my shiny metal a**!" ;)

On-topic: I like the design of your costume, the look, the feel, the design, and the "aura" all work well, and work well for you. I particularly like the design of the tunic and obi (being a kendo/iaido instructor I have a love of such designs), and find them particularly the most appealing parts. The boots look rather smashing too, and I think your hardwork thus far shows quite well. You may consider adding a robe or cape (with hood of course) to the ensemble to add an optional heir of mystery to the design. Other than that I'm not sure what to say...OH! and I love the saber design honestly, I found it really really appealing.

Keep up the good work and welcome to the forums. :)

You look amazing! I'm totally jealous. Your outfit is really well-designed, and it's obvious you have some serious costuming skillz. ^_^  (I wanna be your apprentice!)

Off-topic: Does anyone know if there's a "girls with lightsabers club" on this forum somewhere? I think we should have one, if there isn't one already.

On the girls club...sounds great from the one hand...then there would be those pretending to be girls to hang out with girls...I would look for proof lol.

Avoiding the 300lb, sweaty, hairy, 55yr old guy claiming to be "Missy, 13yr old, loves manga, never been kissed"...cause damn...

But girls should unite...there seems to be many many more today than yesterday...and being a guy who dramatically prefers women...more girls, ladies, and other female descriptors are always welcome to the hobby!
