Title: So I buy a saber and now I must have a costume to go with it...
Post by: RabidFuzzle on June 16, 2012, 06:05:55 PM
I have started talking to a costume designer that works for the same company I do about making this costume a reality. Picture any whites as gray and any grays as black. Boots and belts may stay brown or go black. Thoughts?

I actually think that the white/gray setup you have in the picture would be a lot more striking.

As do I but, either way I think would look great!

Yes, great concept!, For the belt , you could get away with a long leather medieval fencer's belt, (they have ones that are very long & do multiple wraps)

Someone has to say it: Jedi Master Sokka.

Moving on... I think it's a great look, and either color scheme would be awesome, though I too prefer it as shown.

Yeah I had thought the same thing but also thought the white may have been a bit too light side for my purposes. Kinda going for the "True Neutral" to "Chaotic Neutral" kind of character. (Basically a former Jedi turned mercenary...)

Awesome costume idea right there. I'm reminded a little of the assassins's creed outfits.

Reminds me of the "adventurer's robe" from TFU:

I presume you at least got the spark from this concept.  Regardless, it'll look great I think!  Although if you do decide to go with grey and black as a color scheme, I'd lose the brown... but that's just my fashion neurosis coming out lol

I have actually never played TFU. *ducks any flying objects*

I got the image I am using by doing an image search for "Jedi Mercenary". It was apparently meant to be as it just jumped out and grabbed me from the fourth page. I do see the obvious similarities and am guessing that the original artist got his inspiration from TFU.

And I am fashion challenged so you can blame that on my lack of issue pairing brown boots with black/gray clothing.

Thanks for the feedback!

No problem!

And don't worry about being fashionably challenged... Luke was too.  He even wore a brown cloak over a black outfit (yuck!)

Oh the horror...

I think I like the look of the brown boots/belts enough to stick with the white, even if it is a bit more light side...

Colors will not dictate your aspect, just your choices in color  :)

True. And yet it is hard to deny that people are very often judged by their look well before their aspect becomes known.

I must admit, though, that reading all of the responses here I am definitely leaning more towards keeping the colors as is. You all make valid points.

Just a thought but what if you did the white parts in black leather and leave the rest of it exactly as it is.

I could do that and keep the Brown boots/belt just to drive Master Nero to the brink of insanity...

It's a thought but I am really not feeling any more leather than the boots and belts. Thanks for the suggestion! At this point I am definitely leaning towards just keeping it exactly as is for the first run and then possibly adding a black cloak at some point in place of the white one. Just to have options.

All that photo line up shows is that pretty girls can make anything look  good.

Brown and black is a poo combo in most cases...unless you are an orc or a villain.

I would go with the colors presented on your pic...if you look like a nice guy and act bad it is easier to get by than looking like a bad guy and acting nice.

But seriously,

Really, it's up to you. Do what ever colors you feel look best to you. you are the one who needs to wear it. What you have looks good. It's all subjective anyway.

Post pic when you get it together.

Really?  The picture of the four models is from a discussion page dealing with the challenge of wearing brown and black together, as it is generally accepted that true brown and black are non-complimenting...the article goes on to say "why not".

Quite true.

Why not?

But the idea holds true that super models, beautiful actors/actresses, etc. can pull off fashion that most of us would languish with...pretty people usually look good even in comical fashion.

http://www.collegefashion.net/fashion-tips/fashion-challenge-wear-black-and-brown-together/ (http://www.collegefashion.net/fashion-tips/fashion-challenge-wear-black-and-brown-together/)

The basic issue here is would the design of the thread starter benefit from a color scheme change...the design as shown would in my opinion become muted and drab with the light draining aspect of black/brown...against a white background it would pop but nearly any other it would be subdued.

The design is clean and fairly dramatic with good detail lines throughout...it is my opinion that these aspects would be lost with a dark combo.  The design as drawn with the white accents make the whole stand out to my eye.

As the article notes, it is advisable to choose other neutral hues such as camel or taupe rather than basic brown.

But it is just a costume...best of luck and success with your costume project either way, I am sure it will look nice no matter what combo you choose.

Nope just that the guy in that picture looks like an older version of Sokka from Avatar the Last Airbender (the TV show not the crappy movie)

Cute.

Of course consider that the article was written by a kid just out of high school and at fashion college...they are looking to stand out and challenge anything and everything, but that attitude of doing anything to avoid the standard, this seems to carry over for others much later in life.

Good luck with your choice RF!

It's a very good point.  For me the "black and brown" issue is probably better summarized as a general rule of thumb I try to follow - don't mix two colors which are too close in shade.  The examples you posted show black with various mid-range browns, which is actually fine to me... it's just the very dark browns against black that bug me.  Same thing goes for navy and black actually - blue and black can look great together, I particularly like it on Starkiller's TFU2 training robes:

In that case as well you can see where the contrast is there.  For me it's all about contrast, really makes the different colors of the outfit pop.  Just personal preference again.

Bringing it back to the topic, both those designs (with or without the white) look awesome.  If you can get this made I think you'd have a seriously unique costume.

Thank you, Jedi Relmeob! Point for you! It's awesome to have the visual. After actually seeing it I am even more leaning towards the original. I do think it will be worth it to have a black cloak made as well just to have options.

Getting measured today!!! Next step: fabric selection. I love the fact that the person making this is local (we work for the same company). This way I actually get to go fabric shopping with her.

I am sorry. I just find  that a discussion of "Fashion" dealing with color choice coming  up with people who enjoy dressing like a hybrid of a samurai, massage therapist and a gregorian monk with a flashlight hanging from one's belt is a bit silly.

From a fashion point of view, there are far greater crimes we commit than wearing brown with black. :D

Unless you are trying to re-create another character, all this stuff is subjective.

Choose your fabrics well. That is the most important part getting a garment made.

Good luck! I can't wait to see it.

I have to agree on this point. I mean, consider all opinions as possibilities for improvement, but ultimately wear what you want. Black and brown together, IMO, is actually not that bad. My ex-wife's favorite color is brown and she always wore it with some dark colors (black, blue) and looked amazing!

Also, take what I say with a grain of salt. Remember... I AM wearing black and purple!  :o

I, too, like the original. The white is striking, and I don't mind the black-brown.
I think that brown with black definitely can work if the brown is used as an accent color and is different enough from the black so it doesn't run the risk of looking like mismatched fabric choices. (As a female, and as a goth in my younger years, I know very well about making sure all your blacks are the same type of black. Yes, this is a thing. ^_^)

I SERIOUSLY dig the multiple belt look. So loving that!

Cool costume. I can't wait to see the finished look! ^_^
