Among other hardships and frustrations we're facing right now, the night before I was to pick up my pre-ordered copy of Mass Effect 3, my TV died.

Can anyone let me know their critique and experiences with the various download and streaming services around these days? I'm talking Hulu, Vudu, Amazon, Google, etc... Not Netflix. It is or should be dead. What's best, what does it offer. Can I still watch Top Shot and Top Chef? Is it HD? 3D? If the kids can't watch Mytbhbusters and Dinosaur train I might wake up dead. Are there old movies? Is it cost prohibitive? How's the picture? Does it hitch up? At what speeds?

WHAT ABOUT SPORTS?!

shell. Basically I know nothing other than Netflix don't cut it. We're looking for a way to ditch cable entirely to help afford a new TV. We watch very little TV, and almost none of that is broadcast: We DVR almost everything and we only watch a few shows. Paying for cable at this point seems absurd.

I'm sorta in the same boat... the gf and I rarely, if ever, watch TV, and it's typically specific shows which we often end up missing anyway.  Paying for cable is pretty pointless in this new age of online streaming...

I can't offer any advice, I use Netflix.  It works for me (I especially like the old TV shows I get to watch on it) but if that's not your cup of tea then good luck in your search!

If you have an Xbox - I know that Xbox has an ESPN app that can be used, though I don't know how well.

We have a Google TV - several broadcasters, like ABC, NBC, and CBS actually BLOCK Google TV users.  Which sucks, because really, the Google TV is a web browser, basically, and networks like FOX, Lifetime, and some others run ads that interrupt the stream, and those networks that don't want to play with Google are cutting themselves off from a lot of folks.

Discovery is bad about cutting its shows into little segments, rather than streaming full episodes.  So you might be in trouble there.  I do miss seeing full shows, but we were able to keep basic cable along with our Internet for cheaper than simply paying for Internet (still not sure about THAT logic), so we get to see some of our shows.  You might check your options wherever you are.  And Netflix isn't bad for some things - catching up on a show that's on there, for example (Stargate SG-1, Star Trek)...
