Hello, Saberforum,

I am an actor, looking to get into Light Saber street performing (and other things star wars related as well) and I am starting from scratch. One thing that I have yet to really see is anything about hair when it comes to Jedi. It seems like a small little thing, but when you are putting a costume together, it is important to know what it is you want your head to look like. It seems that the standard is just "Have your hair the way it is" and thats that, but I feel like there is more, and if there isn't, there should be. Most styles I've seen are mostly just short, above the ears, and thats the end of that, but what about long hair that isn't like Qui Gon Gin? And where does facial hair come into play? Some digging on google images has not turned anything up, and I don't feel like breaking out the films to take note.

I have been growing my hair and beard out for a while now (With one side of my hair being shorter then the other... I could explain... maybe later) and was interested in cuts or styles that would be Jedi like, without having to ether be too damn long (Qui gon), or way WAY too short (Think Anikin in EPII). I'm not opposed to strange cuts, and I have had a few in my day, I just want to be able to have my long hair still. Here is a front on and a side view of my face (With hair included of course) to maybe give you an idea of what all I can work with.

I have read and seen a lot of stuff on this subforum, and I must say, you Jedi and Sith are all very talented and creative. What would you throw into the mix If you had this opportunity? I feel as though this would be the cheapest and faster way to get a costume started, and I am really interested as to what this forum has to offer for hair and beard advice. Sorry if this is a strange request.

Thanks to everyone for helping me out.

To be honest, there are so many styles. You look at obi wan in ep2 and 3, and it tended to be very neatly trimmed beard, and hair (though a bit longer in episode 2)

The only thing ive really seen codified for hairstyles is for human (or near human) jedi padawans. Close cropped hair, apprentice braid, short ponytail in the back.

Once they become knights, they are left to their own devices. You get some guys like quinlan voss who sport s very messy dirty set of dreads, and you get clean cut guys like obi wan, or wizened old masters like qui gon.

Or mace windu's shaved head. With the diversity of species in the jedi order, having a set hairstyle i guess just...never mattered?

That and by lukes time when in the novels he remakes the jedi order, hes training adults who already have lives to be jedi, probably didnt make much sense to force a dress/grooming code on them.

My advice, go with whatever you want as long as it goes good with your costume. One thing i would point out, something that keeps the iar from your eyes would be a good thing, even with masters like qui gon, the hair was tied in a fasion that wouldnt impede their vision. They may be peacekeepers, but they do end up having to fight once in a while. Anything that hampers your combat readiness, perhaps not a good idea.

Welcome to the forum...

Quite the brave initial consideration...throwing yourself out there.

Until the concept pays your rent I would not change much.

The hair, leave it...there are many options for small braids to hold the bulk back, more like the elves from LOTR movies...this image says Jedi Master in spades IMO

The long hair has many potential options, and you can always pull it back tight and out of the way if desired.

The beard...well...honestly...the beard is a disaster...without it being full you are left with the partial look and this is rarely a positive look unless you are going for an outsider counter culture type...pizza delivery guy, local pot dealer, couch gamer, etc.

This is not a reflection on you at all!  Just the first thought of the beard for public appearance...trim it, shape it, don't let the stragglers creep up your cheeks or down your neck, etc.

Again, brave as all get out...point for you...good luck with your venture...I would focus on the saber, costume, and act long before I would chop hair and such just because.

I have long hair as well & I'm liking the general  Rahm Kota style, with your hair cropping it with a scungee you could easily do Qui-gon's style from the Phantom menace, last Halloween I went long-hair berserker style

I really like that idea from LOTR, could work really well. xD Also, its all cool about how my beard looks. It is unkempt at the moment. I can always laugh at myself. It is not staying like this for long. I like the idea of not cutting it, and I can get my lady friend to help with some of the braiding.

Welcome to the forums Tek! Glad to hear you are getting involved with the whole stage saber combat thing. That's something I want to do myself, but there isn't anything in my city that I have been able to find. So I am thinking of starting my own. But anyway, sorry... derailed your question.

The long hair you have seems to be fine. You could wear it in a ponytail and keept it practical. Or if you wanted to go a bit outlandish, you could throw in some temp hair coloring then seperate your hair into multiple tails or something.

What exactly are YOU looking for? Is there a character from the Star Wars universe that your stage persona would replicate?

I can't really do much with my own appearance. I shave my head and have a very short buzz cut. I can't grow facial hair to save my life. So I'm a pretty cleancut looking Sith.

Tekedo I almost forgot...your only path to success will be portraying a Jedi of some sort, even gray if you must.

But I would avoid sith and dark side applications at all costs...those actors who have tried were cursed, with most ending up living on the street in cardboard boxes and eating out of garbage bins...don't be a guy eating out of garbage bins...besides their cookies are terrible...no sugar...just salt, sand, and pencil shavings...really bad.

I will most definitely be portraying a Jedi. Sith is not for me.

Also as an update, I think I have something that works. Similar to the picture of Elrond, I will have one piece of hair off from the side down my face. This could be looked at as a Padawan braid, but they look different enough to tell a difference. Then, I put the top part of my hair in a pony tail, which holds the rest down. It sounds really girly, but once I get the costume, It will work really well. Thanks guys, this helped a lot! And thanks for all the kind greetings into this awesome forum.
