Standard edge / Heavy Duty is the way to go in my opinion. I also prefer the shorter blades. We own three blades and my favorite is the 24" Standard Edge / Heavy Duty.

I personally agree with your estimations completely, and for the reasons you specified, I have to completely side with the Normal Edge Blades.  They concentrate the color SO MUCH BETTER (in my opinion) than the Ultra Edge.  I know this may be considered Heresy to some (Because of How Well Loved and Received the Ultra Edge Blades Have Been), but I can't help but be honest with myself and pic which blade I personally prefer.  I know that some people have said that they are very concerned with the blade giving the appearance of a "white core" and that it's one of the reasons why they Love the Ultra Edge, I personally could care less about the "white core", I just want whatever color I pick to shine through as Brightly As Possible  Grin

Thank you, Brother Wraith! I'm starting to think that if I HAD to pick a favorite it WOULD be a standard blade, because while the "full" blade look is nice, to me the color is slightly more important.  Undecided

Apologies, Brother!  Wink

It's just that.....the more I look at my standard blade lit up, the more I like how good the colors look with it! And also (being Sith inclined), to me the Red seems more sinister looking in the standard blade! Like I've said before, I like the UE blades too (maybe just as much, but for different reasons)!  Smiley

Yup, all good stuff here...

I mean, ultimately you can chalk up the "differences" between the blade types as what *YOU* personally like or prefer.  And in some cases, people will simply want BOTH.  All depends on what "hits you" just right.

Sort of like preferring vanilla ice cream (or whatever) over chocolate (or whatever)... but... the whole POINT is not *what* you choose... it is that you CAN choose, right?  Smiley

You're absolutely right Master Novastar! That's one of the main reasons I started this thread, is to help people CHOOSE! Grin  I'm hoping to get some pictures of both blades that look like what they do in person, to give people a good visual. Smiley

And if you couldn't tell, I'm one that wants both!  Wink But I understand....all in good time!

My two light sabers (SW Shop) has the FX blade, one removable, one not.  The discussions so far have been about color more than durability.  I guess I am asking all you experts out there about durability.  What is the difference between the blade strengths.  Is the Ultra more durable than the standard blade (and how much more durable than the FX blade)?  And would the standard blade hold up just as well to sparring, or would you need the heavy guage (Heavy or Ultra Heavy) blades?  And finally, what is the consensus for the best sparring blade?Huh

I'm pretty sure the durability is the same between UltraEdge and standard blades. The durability differs between Midgrade and Heavygrade blades. If you're going to be doing heavy dueling you want a Heavygrade blade. Hope that helps!  Grin

Man, how often do we answer this question? An official sticky would probably be nice, but, then we'd have to hope people actually clicked it.

The "edge" has nothing to do with durability. It's either mid grade or heavy duty. Heavy duty blades are twice the thickness of the others. They are, for most intents and purposes, unbreakable. They are twice as thick, twice as heavy.

You make two choices when you order a blade. The "grade" which is how thick the poly is, and the edge which is how it looks. A heavy duty blade, IN an ultra edge has been reported to display more subdued color / brightness, because it is semi-opaque and, as I said, twice as thick. Semi-opaque + thicker = less light gets out.

All four permutations are subject to your own subjective opinion. No one can choose them for you. Most people seem to choose the ultra edge, I think, in large part because of the adjective. It makes it sound as if it's "better". It is not. It is "different".

Choose grade based on intended use, and edge based on the best guess you've got on which you'll think looks cooler.

I personally like my UEHG's. One thing that annoys me is when people say "The red isn't as red in Ultra Edge." I quite frankly don't know what the frack they're talking about. I have a red saber which I use a UEHG on it, and I'll tell you it's quite red. In fact I put a spare standard edge on it, and I see no difference whatsoever. *shrugs* Maybe it's just me.

I didn't say "the red isn't as red", I just said it looks different (not less or more red, and not a different color) As I'll say once again, I like the UltraEdge just as much as the standard (but for different reasons); that's part of the reason why I started this thread! Not trying to be mean or anything, just defending my point.  Smiley

it still looks red but is it the kind of red that person wants?  i put a UE blade and mid grad blade on two red sabers.  i had and showed my brother and sister said which one looks more red they both replied they both look exactly the same but to me the mid grade look a tad richer in color and the UE a little washed out but red none the less; personally i only use UE blades cause i like the fuller blade look and thats what i like about this community of saber enthusiasts we has so many preferences that the smallest detail  like the shade of are red blade can bother someone it makes us individuals  Smiley
