You can make it dark but you can't make it light

« on: April 05, 2015, 03:11:33 PM »

I've been stopped by train security several times and bus drivers have stopped me from boarding until I explain that sabers are actually blunt Tongue. Any advice on how to carry it in a non threatening manner? Should I carry it around in a bag?
Also,  any stories of people gawking and security stopping are welcome Cheesy. I hope I'm not the only one Tongue

I usually put my hilt and accessories in my backpack and I put the blades in a simple soft case made for Bokkens and such, carrying it over my shoulder. Haven't ran into any security quarrels... yet...

If you have an old backpack you don't really care about you can add like a cannester type thing like Anakin's had for the hilt Tongue It was said that's what that area was used for

Have a bag or wrap them. That's what you are meant to do (here anyway) with any kind of training weapon- my sister has been pulled up for her dance swords when travelling from the car through a festival to the stage, which are blunt as and clearly arent real weapons, and she clearly is a performer coz either she is in a bellydance costume or lugging around a large suitcase (though she has purpose made bags for them now). I know Jammo uses a golf bag for his, me personally I have a home made wrap for multiple sabers as well as a new bag I made with two pockets for transporting my double sabers (as I usually troop with my double bladed saber). This keeps them completely covered up. Neither are anything pretty and are made from scraps and some calico but they are functional. They literally cost me a couple of bucks each to make, tops. In a pinch we have also wrapped them in towels and stuck lackey bands on to keep them from unraveling  Tongue

With the wrap, we basically lay it out, stick the sabers in with the end tucked into the bottom pocket (we alternate hilt and blade down to even out the thickness), then roll them up. There are three ties sewn in. The wrap is padded so not only can I easily carry multiple sabers (we regularly have 7 or 8 in it) but it protects them as well.

This is my double saber bag. On the otherside is a webbing strap handle that runs from just before the top to bottom (but since it has my name and phone number embroidered onto it I'm not posting a pic of that Wink ). I didn't have time or the materials when I took that photo, but that also has a tie at the top where the webbing strap is sewn on. Each saber slides into its own pocket, and the bag is also padded Smiley With the strap I can just easily chuck the bag over my shoulder and away I go. When I get the chance I'm adding a zippered pouch to put my blade retention wrenchs and other spare parts in when trooping.

My only stories would have to be when I open up the wrap at events and start pulling out sabers.... and people's eyes just get wider as more come out Cheesy

It's easy enough here, i just.. carry them.
I think the most care i've ever had to take was when i wore the hilts and just carried the blade loose like collapsed fishing rod or such.

I just carry mine around.  I haven't a had a problem with security or with the cops yet!

If I'm going to walk through a crowded place, I actually have a holder that I use for my bokken (it's like a soft tube with a strap on it) and I slip the blade in there and clip the hilt to my belt.  Master Kenobi's hilt is apparently very recognizable and people flip out when they see it.  I love that.

@Blond3, you must make me one Tongue Would be a great travel case too especially for when you move. You should contact Emory about making and selling these on a regular basis like John did =] I know I'd buy a couple for sure only because my brother likes US too

That is a brilliant idea! I'll be using that once my other two sabers come in Cheesy thanks for sharing everyone!

would hardly be worth it. They don't cost much to make yourself and being in Australia, you'd pay more in postage than its worth.

You are welcome Chriscross Smiley

Basically the bag is two layers of brown cotton, one layer of calico and a layer of thin wadding. Stay stitched the wadding to the calico so it won't just bunch up inside. The wadding was cut smaller than the calico and cotton so that I could stitch around the outside easier. Sewn together on three sides then turned inside out making sure the wadding and calico end up inside the two layers of brown, kinda resembles a large pillowcase. Fold over the end into itself so it is tidy and won't fray then stitch to close it. Then sew it into the tubes. I was fussy about how I did mine so that the two tubes share a common wall, but you could simply stitch the two sides and bottom end closed then run as many rows of stitching up its length as you wanted to create individual pockets (too many would just make it floppy and weird to carry). Hand sew on a strap, sew on a tie and done.

Roughly similar method for the wrap, but I used one layer of calico, one of brown and one of wadding, then folded up the bottom edge by several inches and the top edge but a couple and stitched em into place to create the pockets the sabers nestle into. Sewed on three ties along one side, one at each end and one in the centre.

I'm a stitching machine (not a mechanical sewing machine), and I stitched a denim holster for my Dark Initiate.
