This is the music the defined at least two generations and saw the American people through the tough times of the Great Depression, Prohibition, and World War II. It permanently altered the musical landscape, gave rise to a number of musical styles, and continues to influence the best of today's musicians. I live about an hour from New Orleans, so I have the good fortune to experience a lot of "classic" jazz on a regular basis. I'm also a big fan of the blues and of course, the weirdness known as "zydeco" that is native to this region. |

I always just assumed that it was written while taking a break, hence "take five". But now that I think about it is written in 5/4 time. Heh!?! |

Nox, they're wonderful time signatures. But jazz is primarily a dance form. Swing in particular is typically in 4. 5/4 and 7/8 are uncommon in jazz. I can say from personal experience that they are very strange to play in! |
