gotta be careful playing with flammable gases but

I will always rather like the demonstration of balloons filled with different gases with a lighted taper put to them- that's good fun that is! especially in a closed lecture theatre

Hmmm.... need something heavier than air unless it's going to be in a balloon. Ether would be expensive for 5 seconds of fun :/
I burned butane bubbles in my hand once, that was cool not sure about the cost:enjoyment ratio though, it wasn't my butane...

Bottle has propane in it.  It's heavier than air so it stays confined to the bottle and burns down.  As long as the bottle is open at the top its a quite safe experiment, we used to do that one once a year in a high school science class.

depends on how long they left it there, if they instantly unsealed and lit it then it might work, though I would say that you are right.

did you ever get to spray different substances through a Bunsen burner flame and see what colours they make? that was fun

That was my personal project in middle-school. What do 14y/o boys like? FIRE! Lets see what colour stuff burns!

I only burnt the ends of my fingers as a kid playing with matches. That and dousing paper towel in citronella oil and setting it alight is fun.....

I was all ready to respond then I read all the following comments, interesting!



But in my limited experience, ok I have had lots of experience lol, I have done this experiment dozens of times in different vessels...I always use isopropyl alcohol.  Pour in the isopropyl alcohol, cap it, turn it all around to coat every surface, leave upside down (while tightly capped), prepare your shot glass full of isopropyl alcohol, flip over the vessel, up cap, light shot glass, pour in.



It needs to be a chemical with a liquid state to coat the inner wall of the vessel, creating a limited venturi effect.  That is why the descending ring of fire effect with the whoosh at the end.  A chemical with a gaseous state would create a semi-swirling effect as the pressure creates a pressure bubble that would pop as the vortex reached the lowest pocket.

One flows with a ring of fire, the other builds a fire bubble and pops.
