If you have doubts about anything, don't buy it unless they agree to let you have a mechanic look it over.
This. There's plenty of deals to be had out there. The trick is finding them. My dad has a knack for finding cars super cheap. Snagged an '87 Olds Cutlass with like 35k on it for about $1900 at one point. Drove it for a couple years with no issues until I totaled it.  Only accident I've ever been at-fault in (only been in 2 total), which is pretty amazing considering how I drive. |

I gave my 18yr old son my 2000 firebird.  I painted it to his desired color. I even painted the calipers. He drove it for 3 weeks. Then he totaled it. Called to say he got into a little wreck...I went to pick him up and meet the wrecker...broke the rear axle and dropped the transmission. At a weak moment he admitted to doing over 100mph in a 45mph zone the night he wrecked my firebird. He just starts college this week, local instead of across state like he wanted. Wait til he sees what I picked up today for him to use for school...looks like this...  91 dodge caravan I suspect his comment will be "there is no way I will drive that". I also have a bus pass for him. I wonder which one he will pick? |

Don't underestimate the versatility of a minivan. Put the seats down, and you can haul as much as most small pickups so long as it fits. Put them back up when you're not hauling cargo, and haul your friends to Burger King. Slap a hitch on there, and it'll tow your little camper, speed boat, trailer with your lawn mower/atv/jet ski/dirt bike on it.
I'm looking for a cheap one for band equipment. lol.

This is also true. If he wants to, and is willing to save some money and do some of the work himself, he can significantly up the cool factor of that minivan. |

Had a ford conversion van for a while, it was great for camping... fuel economy sucked though and filling a 38 gallon tank really hurt at times, but hey, when you rack up almost 300,000 miles with no major issues, there's something to be said for that...

I would be scared of the van becoming used as a "shaggin wagon" if you get my drift Rel. Beyond that, I think it's perfect. It serves him right for trashing that poor Firebird. I remember driving my Mom's 69 XR7 Convertible Cougar. I was completely paranoid of anything happening to her and only drove her once. Decided right then and there that if it were to be a nice car, I'd save up and own her myself. That Cougar was awesome though... 427 and all. My Mom ended up selling her... that was a sweet ride.  |
