Lightsabers are interesting even outside of their coolness. Beyond the discussions on how they work...how they are used is an even more interesting one. It's supposed to be a sword...but there is a lot of things swords have it doesn't. For one Saber's are curved swords...but I guess Lightrapier didn't have the ring Lucas wanted. Swords have edges that require proper alignment and friction to cut...lightsabers do not. Right there a ton of techniques become unnecessary. It will always cut. Then the hilt...its rounded, Sword Hilts are always oval or even slightly rectangle because it provides better hold and allows you to know where the edge is without looking. Again, unnecessary for a Lightsaber. So in terms of real world combat Rapier and Jian styles would probably fit best in terms of swords. But I think Escrima would be a better fit and I don't think anyone has done this yet.
Sir you seem to have a background in martial arts

Escrima would be fun! Now I want to see this happen.

Sir you seem to have a background in martial arts
I wish I could simply say "yes" lol. I have never been formally trained in any martial art, but Combat related things, especially ancient forms of combat. I never wanted to take the "Strip Mall" martial arts (not that my family could have afforded it anyway) so I found as many resources as I could. First those stupid "How to" books but as I got older and the internet became a thing I found places to see old manuscripts and manuals. Basically, I'm self trained in a little of a lot of things. Weapons are my forte though. Swords especially, have been since I first heard "By the Power of Greyskull!" I'm also a history enthusiast so I things like learning how the Knights and Samurai would have fought was a pursuit. But those pursuits lead me to look at many other cultures and their martial history...at least what has survived. So much has been lost.

I grew up in bad neighborhoods, violence in the family with alcohol, and having a violent temper at age 11 a teacher took interest in me and introduced me to martial arts i immediately fell in love with it and found my calling first as a student then as an instructor. I have studied various martial arts over the last 48 yrs and have payed that teachers kindness forward when ever i can. and like you the history of hand to hand combat with and without weapons intrigues me. Your are very correct about things that have been lost to time and in the name of progress. I have my own grievances about these "storefront" schools that i will not get into in an open discussion. Starwars has awaken and brought to life though in a fantasy background some old ideas made anew and the board rules wont allow me to get into it . Dart Tepes you keep on finding things from the past and enlighten those around you . I would to read your thoughts on what you have discovered

Thank you for the kind words.... are you a Licensed Instructor? If so I think you can receive the title of Master on the Forum. As a history buff and weapons buff I do like to dispel myths...such as European swords being heavy lumps of Iron inferior to everything else. But it is hard for to watch things with combat or history in it....to often I find myself saying "what are you doing" or "the hell is that" lol. Luckily my wife isn't annoyed by it. After we watch something with sword fighting or historical things she asks what they got wrong lol. Its not that I don't understand changes have to be made....but its a lot of little things that add up and give people false perceptions. Like Medieval clothing ...its always dark and drab in films or covered in filth. Our ancestors actually loved brightly colored clothing and while yes their hygiene would put us off they did wash themselves and their clothes. Honestly if life was actually how Hollywood showed it we wouldn't be here because everyone would have died of infections lol.

It is incredibly powerful to understand that violence is within us all. The responsible person finds positive and constructive ways to vent it.
