Rock and Metal. I need no other music in my life.

I thought I clicked Metal but apparently I didn't.   I figured Rock would most likely be the main one.

Music is my life and my job.  I "listen" to all genres just enough to understand what my students are interested in.  That said, I picked Rock, Pop, Soul/Motown, Funk, Classical, Jazz, Country, and Heavy Metal.  Those are the ones I gravitate towards the most, with '80s and early '90s rock/metal and pop being the main ones.  I meant to click Other, but I guess I missed.

I guess, if I'd thought this through, I'd have selected "other" also, because I also listen to instrumental (non classical) music. Mainly, movie and TV music.

I picked Rock, Heavy Metal, and "Indie." I didn't see alternative on the list, but Indie and Alt Rock are often lumped together. Also a lot of the Alt Rock I listen too would likely be classified as Indie. Stuff like Arctic Monkeys, Silversun Pickups, and Cold War Kids.

I love all music except for country but voted for Hip Hop even though I listen to a lot of classic rock and alternative rock nowadays. My go-to playlist is still Hip Hop

I didn't pick R&B, Hip Hop, and Rap  because I don't listen to Rap. But I'm good with some R&B age Hip Hop.

Grew up on Country but most of today's country isn't my liking, can't just turn in a country station and listen to it. Classic country and Texas country I can get into.

Really about the only thing I don't listen to is Rap, Classical, and Jazz.

That's what the “other" option is for.

The / symbol means “or". So if like RnB and Hip-Hip but nit Rap you can still tick that box. Then clarify your option in the comments section.

With all that in mind, I started this poll just as a fun thing. There are plenty of genres I missed off. Buy I included an "other" option for that reason. Also, growing up in the UK how music was grouped together obviously differed from the States.

As a black guy I have always group RnB, Hip-Hop and Rap together. However, if my options are insufficient and are going to make people unhappy then I shall just not post new polls in the future.

I was pretty much just explaining why I pick what I did etc.. The poll didn't upset me at all.

I like interesting music.  Genre isn't as important as long as it is engaging and complex.  And balanced.  Not all one element.  :-)

My wife text me today that this is her new jam. Listened to it and it's not bad, reminds me of a Bruno Mars type funk. But I'm not crazy any her voice.

Used to be rock. These days I primarily listen to rap. Some country and alternative sprinkled in.

Point for diversity

For me it depends on my mood. Out of the genres included on the poll I voted for everything except heavy metal and country. They have just never appealed to me. However, of all the others on there they all have there place in my life. Sometimes if I just want something playing in the background, sometimes I want something to get me in a party mood before I'm heading out, sometimes I just want something to sing along to in my room/in the shower.

I have always said that music comes in two types; good and bad. And that can be applied to every genre. Now what I think is "good" or "bad" may differ to others. Or there may be some crossover. However when I was first really discovering music (aged 12 - 16) I gave pretty much everything a chance. I never dismissed any song because it came from a particular genre. Which is why as an adult (and I use that word loosely  :D ) my taste is very broad and some would say eclectic.

One of the things I miss doing is DJing at my friend's bar on the weekends, as it indulged my passion for all the genres I liked. The crowd trusted in my selection and even those who may "only like rock" soon were dancing to house or RnB or whatever else I played. Because I selected and mixed songs in a such a way as to create a positive and fun atmosphere. Plus, alcohol helped too!  ;D

These days, since I stopped DJing, I don't follow chart music as much as I used to. Most genres these days I find are producing uninspiring music. There is very little that will stand the test of time and have people still listening in 20, 30, 40 years time, unlike a lot of artists/songs from the the golden age of music (1967-1974) and the silver age of music (1980 - 1988) or even the golden era for RnB (1994 - 1999).


To me, the golden age and silver age I just mentioned were the two periods in music history that were the most creative and innovative. All the artists that we consider legends in the industry gave us songs and albums that have stood the test of time. Across all genres, whether that was rock, soul, motown, disco, house in the eighties, reggae, pop. The current state of the music industry is down to the music industry itself be too greedy and not wanting longevity for artists and their careers. They want short term success targeted at specific demographics, rather than making good music that will resonate with multiple generations.

I listen to just about everything but country. I like some metal but not too crazy, I can't listen to death metal, too throaty for me.  I'm the same way though, it's all dependent on my mood or what I'm doing. 

Alternative/Indie doesn't seem to have the "uninspired" issue. Metal maybe, to the untrained ear, since most non-listeners tend to think it all sounds the same....:D

It's funny that I prefer my music more rhythmical and without chaos. But then there's jazz, which can be very chaotic and yet I can find the beauty in that chaos. Although I may be biased as I used to play saxophone in a jazz funk band back in uni.

I think it depends on the type of jazz. Look up When I get Low, I get High on YT. Awesome. But there are some jazz forms that just don't seem to have any coherence.

One of my favorite bands is MGMT, which is basically "electronic chaos rock," and that's one of my favorite things about them. lol

You just need to listen more. The coherence is there daddio.

Oh, and Ella Fitzgerald is ALWAYS a win

I think upbringing has a major influence on music taste too. My dad is from Jamaica, my mum is from Trinidad. So I grew up listening to a lot of reggae, calypso, soul and motown in my younger years. So I was programmed to like a certain amount of smoothness and sexiness in my music! 😎🤣

Electronic Chaos Rock?  Interesting

What is Electronic Chaos Rock? I'm listening to MGMT Electric Feel right now and it sounds likea modern 80s pop rock to me. LOL on fact the next video to play was Weezer's remake of African. Seems like YouTube address with me.

What kind of music is Panic! At The Disco considered? I call it Pop Rock. My whole family love Panic, we have seen them in concert 3 times in the last 3 years. He puts on a hell of a concert!

I should also mention I agree that mood definitely affects what I want to listen to. There are times for upbeat songs, time for softer music, and sometimes I need something inspirational.

 The genres I posted and voted for are go to listens, but I am very open to other music. Like Knox said, it’s more about “good or bad”, than the genre. But ......


I’m the only one in my family that listens to music regularly. I listen almost every day, sometimes for hours. But the rest of my family? Maybe on a long car trip every few months. 🤷‍♂️

So, since I was homeschooled until recently, I’ve had very little exposure to music. There’s probably hundreds, maybe thousands of songs out there I would like, but simply haven’t heard.

Although I had to look up who the Speakeasy 3 were covering, I first heard the song by them with a 3-part harmony. It was everything smooth and sexy about jazz.

As far as Country goes, being from the south you would figure That would be my go to...but really Southerners listen to rock way more than country.  I only like Old School Country though....like anything pre 1990.  I don't listen to music to relax though.  I listen to wake up, get pumped for a workout etc.  So I tend to gravitate towards harder more aggressive songs and genres.

Am I the only one who created seduction CDs? You know, compilation of songs to play when you're about to get it on with a lady friend? (or make friend depending on your preference)

I think you mean PRE-1990. You poor child. I feel your pain when I go visit my family in AK. It's like if you're not listening to country you may as well shut the radio off for all the other options you have.

I did mean Pre.  My brain got its wires crossed.  I currently live in Florida and the one rock station in my area plays good music, but the hardest they go is Nirvana.  When I went home to Mississippi for my fathers funeral the rock station there was playing Metallica, Korn, Rob Zombie, SlipKnot, Disturbed mixed in with the Eagles, Bob Seger, CCR etc.  it was awesome.


Music has no effect on that particular "mood" for me or my wife.  In fact most of the songs that people consider the best for that activity, frankly, irritate me. 

Back when I was at uni this was more of a thing. Although I'd be lying if I said i don't still occasionally put together a play list, light some candles and incense to create a romantic mood. Although hearing that certain "mood" songs irritate you makes me sad. But, each to their own.

 its the "slowness"  Slow songs (with a few exceptions) bore me. 

That song is tame, they turned down the synth a bit. lol Listen to "Kids," "Time To Pretend," or some of their other songs that just beat you over the head with the synthesizer. lol

Old P!ATD was emo-pop punk, much like Fall Out Boy or My Chemical Romance. However, much like FOB, they kind of shifted to straight up pop-rock, often with more emphasis on the pop than the rock.
