Title: My First Self-Taught Sewing Lesson Result (Sith Inspired Design)!
Post by: Lord Raváge on September 09, 2015, 12:12:19 PM
This most recent wardrobe addition (Sith Red Obi, Tabards & Belt Sash w/black trim) is my very 1st attempt to actually "use" my sewing machine and it took me several day to complete...

...I have a new found appreciation and infinite level of respect for those who design/create, sew & tailor for a living!

Made a few minor mistakes along the way that I'll correct the next time due to a helluva learning curve using a sewing machine. :o
The next project will be an inversion of this one consisting of: Black Obi, Tabards & Belt Sash w/Sith Red trim.

I gotta recharge my batteries a 'lil before embarking on that journey, though (whew)!

Give me some collective feedback regarding your thoughts on this project.

Thanks Samhain!!!

I used Simplicity pattern #5840 (pictured below) as inspiration w/a few minor Obi (width, closures, trim) & Tabards (trim) adjustments to my final version(s). I'm working up the nerve to attempt the pictured black cloak because I'll need to alter the hood to a more SW style. :-\

I made the Belt Sash pattern from scratch inspired by Savage Opress' (pictured below) wardrobe.

Savage Opress was once a common Nightbrother whose fighting prowess impressed Asajj Ventress. Transformed into a monstrous warrior by Mother Talzin, Opress became Count Dooku's new assassin and secret Sith apprentice.

As promised earlier, here is a new photo (Black Obi, Tabards & Belt Sash w/Sith Red trim) of my most recent wardrobe addition in a continued attempt to design/sew for the very 1st time "ever".

Give me feedback regarding your collective thoughts on the pictured inversion(s) below.
I'll post more pics wearing black pants & tunic with these Black Tabards/Obi/Sash soon for a point of reference to see which you collectively prefer.

Here is the "Fade to Black" version w/an additional more sinister background added that most wanted to see...interested in getting your feedback on this one.
Soon I'll put up the "Wrath of Red" version to illustrate the all red Sith look to complete most of the wardrobe variations up to this juncture.

I should have my inverted custom Sith cloaks by December in time for "The Force Awakens". Will keep you all posted on that project.

Thanks for the point, BigBear!!! :o

It's greatly appreciated as I hope my minor design/sewing achievement(s) can be an inspiration to others to attempt to develop the unique wardrobe of their own individual characters as well by focusing on the attention to detail.

The red with black accents reminds me of the Royal Guard. The black with the red accents looks magnificent! and magnificently Sith! well done!

A black cloak lined in red would look amazing with this. Points for you.

Thanks so much for the DS point and Sith compliments, Roband!!!
It is my duty & honor to represent the Order of The Sith in grand fashion!  ;D

Brilliant call on the Royal Guard twist as it did not initially come to mind during the design phase...hope you don't mind if I somehow integrate that into my ongoing character's developing canon. ;)

I started working on the cloak but decided instead to alter the project in the direction of a "hooded mantle" as I'm thinking I really don't want to completely cover this wardrobe with a cloak after spending months on the head-to-toe creative direction. I simply want to integrate a hood to cover the back of my Sith-inspired half mask & goggles.
With that in mind, I'm focusing on sewing a Red version and Black version of the hooded mantle to tuck "under" the tunic rendering the Tabards and Obi exposed while allowing the hood to remain fully functional.
This should complete my wardrobe and still allow the original desired quest to create mix-and-match Red/Black options. :D

Here is the Black Hooded Mantle (Red version forthcoming) I finished in lieu of a full cloak.
For the record, I'm wearing the mantle "under" my tunic exposing only the hood to avoid covering my tabards.

My mix-and-match Sith wardrobe is now complete and I will spend some time meditating on all that I have learned during my 1st ever sewing lesson.  8)

Thank you all for your feedback, support & suggestions!!! ;)

Thanks, Gait!

I created a cardboard template (see below) from the hood of my SW cloak (very large & rounded).
I then traced the pattern on the material (Gabardine) before cutting.

I recently added alternate Sith vambrace/glove (open-finger) options to my attire due to the difficulty of wearing full-fingered gloves and being able to grab/handle stuff at Cons.
I'm pleased with the complimentary alternate look/functionality to the chromed version. :)

I still had to figure out a different way to tighten/keep them snug over my tunic sleeves with one hand as they have laces which are difficult to tie with one hand.
After looking at some of my Mtn Biking gear, I ended up deciding on "Cord Lock Stoppers", which is the most expeditious move to don/doff the vambraces. ;D

Here's the resulting vambrace solution (I'll tuck the extra lace inside when tightened):

I must say, I'm REALLY glad I made the decision to make a "cape" as it adds a refined appeal to my Sith Overlord character and takes the visual impact to another level (especially when it "flows" behind me as I ambulate).

Great question...I've noticed that there are many variations of "red" that exist to choose from, however, as much as I painfully take the time to research, thus far have I have been extremely fortunate that the items purchased online/locally have been true to color as presented/posted/advertised after arriving and seeing in person.

Having said that, until I see them in pictures or video from various sources (other people's cameras) I'm not completely convinced.

Sick for sure. There is one messed up looking picture though, the one with the front short blade and kinda natural looking back blade :P On the 5th page I think. Probably was in a rush on that one or didn't really know how to make the blades look good in it. Needs a big touch up I think. Can't wait to get my full Sith tunics done. Has to be put on hold until next month though so x.x

Thanks and yes, I make all of my wardrobes with the wide tabards, obis, big hoods and belt sashes as that is my signature SW look. Regarding LA Cons; I think you've named them. LA Cosplay Con seems to be in a holding pattern. I'm personally looking forward to Stan Lee's ComicCon this fall at the downtown LACC. If you're in LA & haven't already, join my FB GCC group (https://www.facebook.com/groups/OfficialGCC/) as I try to list the major ones.

Finally completed an original "Shadow Sith" project I've been brainstorming for quite some time. This wardrobe variation was inspired by Shadow Trooper/TIE Fighter helmets & flight-suits combined w/my passion for hoods, capes & cloaks. First time working w/PU (polyurethane leather) so here's a few test shots of all the combined elements as I explore areas for refinement. I'll probably revert back to my larger belt or opt to get an alternate Dark Side belt at some point due to the weight of my sabers and gear pouches for Cons/Photo-Shoots. Nevertheless, I wanted to test the visual of the Galactic Empire belt which isn't designed to support weight. Better pictures to come but gimme feedback.
(BTW: Hooded cape pictured was made by me; all other articles were purchased, painted & customized (i.e. mask).)

I got ya, Dutchman! Funny story...I'd planned to attend a cosplay photo-shoot this past Saturday, but opted not to because of the triple digit temps. The material doesn't breathe, and I wouldn't have worn any of my variations due to the many layers in general of SW garb which doesn't bode well in heat.

Thanks Dutchman, foam/worbla armor would be the most challenging due to the steep learning curve, tools needed & costs involved to do it at the high level I would want for realism. Having said that, I would opt to purchase LARP pieces and/or custom paint them to my preferences if I add an armored Dark Side wardrobe to my repertoire.

That. Is. Incredible!
What kind of paint do you use? Seriously LR, that is outstanding work; absolutely PERFECT for Sith  8)
Dutchman, I regularly use a combination of "paint" components which include: "Krylon Colormaster" Paint+Primer along w/"Krylon Colormaster" Clear Coat (gloss & satin), "Sharpie" Metallic pens (crisp, defined lines), "Testors" model paint (cars, motorcycles, planes, trains, etc.) & "DecoArt" Metallic Lustre Wax.
Awesome work!! Looks quite ready for prime time.

Much obliged to you all in hopes this possibly serves as inspiration to make your individual characters more original as I'm inspired by the SW saga!!!

IN-credible! Yet another LR masterpiece!  I like how the cape is reminiscent of Count Dooku  :). And the various backdrops in each scene is the proverbial icing on the cake!  Quality work LR!

-1 for you  :D

Yes, TD, I commissioned the "jet black" Darth Tyranus-inspired Cape, to which I attached my own custom signature hood to coordinate w/the Imperial Officer's uniform underneath :D
Definitely liking that mask, Raváge.
Obliged TJ...  :)

Hello Lord Raváge, your artistry on your outfits are to be commended. I was told about you. I'm new to this world and have found your [FB group] in CA. Are there any requirements to join the group as I don't deal with face book or most modern world tech? I'm more a recluse but would like to meet others who are into the way of the saber.
Greetings Redeye! Although there are members who do indulge in saber sparring, regrettably, the GCC is a FB group that heavily utilizes the social media outlet for most members to communicate (along w/text or calls for individuals who exchange contact info). The only requirement is having a FB profile to join.
