Lost in the Wonderland of Oz

Taking the heart of books about Oz and Wonderland...where the authors played with the ideas of nonsensical, fantastical, and whimsical with a nod towards clever wording/words having power and effect.

Taking the heart of these worlds and adding other elements from modern settings that were certainly influenced by both, like the Xanth series (for those not familiar, a trilogy of novels set in a magical world just beyond our own where each person born there had a single magical aspect or ability such as could make inanimate objects start singing, start the month off as a young beautiful girl as as the month continues end off being a elderly woman, talk to trees, fly at a normal walking speed, create a magical sword that fights for you, etc. but the main gist of the setting and the stories is the layering of puns through out)...even settings like seen in Labyrinth was heavily founded on aspects from both.

So considering all that, take it all in and let us say that the worlds are all connected with vast forests, open deserts, high mountains, deep rivers and lakes separating the small fractioned communities.

What sort would you desire to be, character wise?

Rather than take the easy route of one of the four witches, the wizard, a king or queen...let us be just a step above the mundane...starting out on the life of adventure...not the chosen one or any such...something clever, something punny, something witty, etc.


So a character of the whole, combined community...could be a Winkie, a goblin riding a dog or a big chicken, a Munchkin, an anthropomorphic rabbit, raven, or chess piece, etc.

But something with a nudge or a twist...

an anthropomorphic playing card, the 2 of diamonds or hearts (the lowest in most games) being a gambler and risk taking daredevil

a Munchkin Casanova, a real ladies man...31" tall, pastel ederhosen wearing, member of the Lollipop Guild, with a gleaming smile

an anthropomorphic rabbit that collects human fingers, for good luck

A blue or pink Winkie (the green guards from the Wicked Witch's castle)


And then consider a single minor magical aspect, ability, or talent to seal the deal...again something that would make others go "that is great!"

All the normal considerations from those lands would be in effect...breadfruit trees, that provide loaves of bread and fruit with jam inside...some animals and plants move/talk...mixed up creatures, blended like a pig with wings...answers to riddles will open many doors and not keys.

This setting would constantly be going through its own Game of Thrones with dozens of Kings and Queens.  Changing lands...those between the established ones, with land breaking up and floating away or into the sky...lakes turning to glass...heavy snowfall one day and roasting dry heat the next...all the plants changed from green to purple and only those animals and people caught within the change could safely eat from the changed produce...etc.

The Yellow Brick Road will need frequent maintenance due to all of the group skipping with metallic feet and jeweled footwear...or at least that is what my inspectors will use to justify the work to the wizard.

Ahh yes...species. ..I forgot that. Let's say munchkin, they seem to be big with organized labor in OZ.

And for magic....how about invisibility.  The ability to vanish from the public when all goes bad...but only for 15 minutes at a time. When the heat starts coming...I got to move quick to get away.

Sounds like fun...I thought of a Munchkin also  

Hey to keep the incredibility powerful power of invisibility in check, fitting with his shifty nature, etc. how about invisible as long as he holds his breath...if he pushes it then he could pass out...being a chubby little bugger he does not have much endurance.

A billy goat given anthropomorphic qualities by a witch.

Looks like a standard domestic billy goat, mundane horns, dappled white/brown/black, with a decent human level mind, normal-ish human voice, and a humanish face.

 




The magical aspect is his singing voice...flowers bloom, food/drink tastes better, candles burn brighter, sad feelings fade, etc.

I'll be a Hue-Man character. as in, human, but I can change the colors of my body/hair/eyes, but only during sunset or sunrise. does that count as my magic power, or do I get another one?

I would think color change would be one of those that it need not only be crepuscular...I like the idea of it, very horse of many colors sort of thing, very Oz...perhaps something related as a slightly stronger aspect like can take the shape as well as color of anything relative to his mass...but with some restrictive aspect like as long as he holds his breath as above or as long as he keeps his eyes closed or as long as he hums etc.

Something like that maybe?

A great thought though...perhaps even changing color reflective to emotional responses

I could see that being interesting...as long as the touch is skin to skin, the contact point changes color, and it only lasts as long as the contact is maintained.

Kinda powerful but restrictive, I likes it.

Red Wick a traveler from Quadling.  He makes his living by making and selling candles.  His candles are unique in that they capture and remove ill thoughts, depression, or sadness.  To make a candle he uses hair from the individual asking for a candle along with other fibers to make the wick.

The candles are all red, as is the Quadling tradition.

The skill to make special candles is a family trade secret.

His magical talent is a transforming touch, he can turn metal into wax (red wax), but the effects are temporary depending on the weight and volume of the metal...a small coin could stay wax for a full day and night, where as a suit of armor may only stay wax for a few minutes.

How about those created types, each with a self imposed flaw/major quirk?

Scarecrow, Tinman, Jack Pumpkinhead, Tik Tok, etc.








Making an interesting character of the flawed created type might be fun

How about creatures for our setting...those make of mixed up parts, animals, and items...bound by clever words or phrases, puns, riddles, etc.?



The word famulus for example...a creature who is a familiar or conduit for magical ability to a wizard or magician.

Frabulous Fam Ulus Corvus...a magical raven.  They can all speak and think.  Once established as a companion they will all ask a riddle or question, each sunrise and sunset, if the other gets it wrong the Corvus will fly away never to be seen again.




Each has a magical ability of some sort that it can imbue to the companion if the mood strikes them to do so...they are stubborn and willful.

Such as...

causing all seams to unravel
turn salt into sugar or vice versa
cause hair to grow anywhere
exchange voices (swap a dog and mans voice, so he barks and the dog talks...though it makes no sense at all)
hide in shadows
shrink
grow
cause others/objects to stink
turn wine/beer/etc. into water
etc.

The word scobberlotch...being incurably lazy and worthless.

Scooberloach...a magical land fish that has beauty that distracts any who see it and upon contact causes instant desire to sleep...the loach ever so slowly eats the victim's youth until they pass away, then the loach slowly crawls away to an open area as on a large rock or hanging from a branch...sleeping, waiting for its next meal.  They despise water and will turn plain and fairly ugly until they dry off...so they avoid rain, puddles, and are fearful of open water such as rivers and lakes.

Moorhsum the Mushroom Man...part man part mushroom, born in a deep forest, spreads mushroom spores by sneezing which he does a lot as he is allergic to blue, chickens, and the number 7...he is seeking a Mushroom Woman to start a mushroom family...he travels constantly, but when not walking he is usually sleeping...he eats nothing but mushrooms, some growing on his person, his walking stick, or from his pack...he knows more about mushrooms than anyone else, though getting him to stand still or stay awake long enough to answer a question is a tough order.

His magical aspect/ability is to cause mushrooms to grow at an alarming rate on any surface including people, animals, and plants...the longer he stays in contact the more the mushrooms grow.

As he walks, his footprints leave small mushrooms beginning to grow on their own.
