If you're looking for a list...

South Australia: Croweaters
Western Australia: Sandgropers
Northern Territory: Top Enders
Queenslanders: Banana Benders
Tasmania: Taswegians (I've also heard them called Apple Eaters)
New South Wales: Cockroaches
Victoria: Cabbage Patchers

There are bound to be other names. We like making stuff up, especially if it pokes fun at someone. Smiley

From another thread...I thought it was interesting and fun, but off topic where it was.

So I am throwing it out here for review and addition.

What forum safe and reasonable non-insulting names are common to refer to folks in your own country, states, and neighbors?

Seriously...not kidding, stay away from the ones you know or should know others will be insulted by...just the fun ones.

Well, I'm American, so Yankee. This serves dual purpose. It seems outside the US(especially Aussies and Brits) use it as a generic term to refer to all Americans. Inside the country, it's usually used by Southerners to refer to us in states above the Mason Dixon Line. A generic term for "Northerner."

Then there's the alternate definition of Yankee... It's the same thing as a quickie, except you're by yourself.

Being from Texas I sadly dont know many that would be appropriate, but we've always called Oklahoma "the Vortex". My family are UT fans so they like to say "the only reason Texas doesn't float into the Gulf of Mexico is because Oklahoma sucks so much." Then of course we call the Brits "Redcoats" (Lovingly of course) but that's all I got

In Kentucky & West Virginia, they refer to drivers from Ohio as FIFO.  People from New England states that vacation during the winter in the Gulf states are referred to as Snow Birds.  When my brother lived in Louisiana, he was picked up some slang and would refer to people from Texas as Texicans.  In Hawaii, I was often referred to as a Mainlander.  I have two friends from Utah that refer to Missouri as the Promised Land and the people there as the Chosen.  Never understood the last one.

American slang nicknames by area and or region, regionalisms, and while these are fairly common in these areas they rarely used outside the same...

Banker...someone from the outer banks of North Carolina

Benny...a person who lives part time as in vacationing in New Jersey along the shore

Buckeye...someone from the state of Ohio

Cajun...a person from Louisiana with Arcadian heritage, can be used for a person from the region who is country/rural

Cheesehead...someone from the state of Wisconsin, the state is well known for its dairy and cheese in particular

Conch or Concher...a person from the Florida Keys especially Key West, it is a small odd community claiming to be Repubilc

Foolio...someone from the state of Minnesota, kinda mean...referring to being awkward and foolish, not sure why

Fudgie...a tourist from Southeast Michigan, who is visiting or vacationing in Northern Michigan, a reference to the fudge industry

Hoosier...a person from Indiana, hundreds of myths for the word but common is the combined greeting "who is here" Whos'er?

Hillbilly...somebody from the southern Appalachian Mountains, usually referring to those uneducated in schools living "up in the hills"

Illiana...a person from central Illinois

Kentuckiana...someone who lives/works in counties that are in both Indiana and Kentucky

Mainiac...a person from the state of Maine

Masshole...someone from the state of Massachusetts, and they don't really like it lol

Okie...a person from Oklahoma

Ridgerunner...used in several states that have the Appalachian Mountain Trail passing through it, the people who live on the ridge

Sooner...someone from the state of Oklahoma when it was a territory, references cheating to gain land rights

Tar Heel...a person from North Carolina, a nod towards NC State University

Yat...someone from New Orleans, most often with ties to black creole heritage, from the commonly used "who is that" Who'dat

Yinzer...a person from Pittsburgh, usually referring to oneself "you ones", old Scot-Irish y

Yooper...someone from the Peninsula of Michigan, the UP or upper peninsula thus "U P'er"

...to be sure there are many more but they are mostly completely insulting and derogatory

Didn't Victorians used to be referred to as 'Mexicans' because they are south of the border (between NSW and VIC, and south of Murray River)? Also Queenslanders can be 'cane toads'.

We very commonly refer to Americans as Yanks or Yankees (Yanks being more common term). British are referred to as Poms. New Zealanders are Kiwis. The terms- like most slang like this- are derogatory in origin but in most instances aren't used in insult- or at least not seriously. After all we like to come up with all kinds of slang and insults that aren't used seriously Tongue for me when I use either term its not in insult, its just simply substitution. Just the same as the different names for people from each state- they are pretty much used in humour.

I'm realizing now I don't know any slang terms for Californians. I guess Gold Diggers would work? (Golden State) But more appropriate for So Cal women.

Ere in indiana it's called "Corn State"... an apropriate name that you would understand if you went into our suburbs...
corn.... corn.... corn.... and more corn.... and enough more corn that you'd rejoice if you saw a field with beans... either that or in winter.

too much corn.
