Spent about an hour spinning my Apprentice V4. The raw aluminum turns my hands black just like when I used to wear a gold band on my finger.
Any of the rest of you experience this?

Yes, it happens. It will lessen over time and use though. The choke point on my primary spinning saber has a different looking finish now than it used to. It is a lot less shiny, but it no longer blackens my hands.

Either gloves, or put up with it until your saber is broken in.

While this is not something I have ever encountered, could it be schmutz from the manufacturing process? A thin layer of dust?

I would have called it oxidation as well. It only happens with intense use and it stops once you have rubbed some of the shine off the aluminum.

reading the title of this thread i thought that there was rust.  I think that is just a little finish and whatever left over from the fabrication. I can not speak to the specifics of it but i know that whenever something is machined, its filthy. then there is always whats on your hands.

A pair of gloves and wiping down your saber before and after each use could help some too. but as far as i can tell that is not oxidation its just metal crud. most likely the finish on the metal or left over dried oil from the machining process or something like that.
