Agreed... a lot of concerns going on here, for sure.  Whatever the case... if I had *MY* way, I would allow everyone to STILL express their own "character" and/or creativity with a costume or "suit" / training uniform... and yet--be *SAFE*.  Smiley

God knows... I do NOT want it to become like Kendo or Fencing... the gear worn is... "too homogenized" in my opinion.  Like... you know... having too much of the same meal every day--gets boring.  We'd want to avoid that at all costs, as... it would destroy the very idea of having a "Star Wars-ish" world going on for sparring matches... and additionally... for filming, it would kind of look silly to me, too.

Not to mention--an added "Ok, I'm a geek but let's see YOU spar in a __________ suit/armor" bonus kind of thing would be goin' on.  That is... if you DIDN'T choose to go with "standard" sith / jedi cloaks and tabbards and general garb... just by being *IN* a Vader costume (for example) would win you some CRAZY SKILL POINTS for fighting in such stuff...

I mean... can you IMAGINE that?!?!  It's hard enough for COSPlay Vaders in groups like 501st, etc. to breathe... let alone FIGHT in that stuff, lol.

Hmm... I wonder... there would have to be some kind of "point bonus" bequeathed to super-crazy costumes where people sparred in the gear, hehehhe

I've been part of a international group of competition historical combat using Rattan weapons.  i'm vaguely assuming the sabers would hit lighter (we dent 12 Gauge steel helms with some of our hits).  But there is a massive amount of variation with armor from Gothic full plate, samurai armor, late period "hidden" armor etc. but all with the same armor requirments (which officials check EVERY tourney or war)  here is the basics which i know might not be relivant with sabers but something to think about.  Full helm with front grill or slots 1/4" smaller then the min weapon thickness, rigid over the elbows, knees.  Full wrist/hand protection, Groin protections for both males and females, rigid over Kidneys, throat/upper spine guard.  Any armor other then that is pure optional though shoulder/collarbone armor is very common.

I think the key two points would be to have concerns over face/eyes, and throat.. Hand hits might not be "dangerous", but since i'm just healing from a broken pinky finger from fighting a young pup using my short polearm, i can say they might still need some attention. Tongue (he got my pinky through full steel gauntlets when i blocked.. but i caught him up side the head at the same time) Guess my points would be protection is very critical, BUT you can do it with quite a bit of variation for looks (they also have modern sport/combat armor just for this sort of thing that can be worn under cloths/gear.

That all being said.. Just recently found out about these LED Sabers, and am soo hooked... my wife not quite so happy.. but even at 5 my daughter wants to be a sith with a rainbow saber...??  Not sure if there are many others over here in Maine, but my best friend and i think we can convert quite a few of our fighting friends over to sabers too Smiley

my sons and neghbors kid love to spar so i came up with a system , no head or neck shot allowed , hand shots dont count , no hard and really fast swinging allowed,. The match is to 3 points. arm, back, chest and leg strikes get 1 point. each time a point is made both combatents back to staring position ( bolth sabers crossed ). First to 3 points wins the match. This works really well and the boys are ages 9,12,and 14. We have not had many issues with this system. The 9 year old likes to duel reversed grip and saber staff. Its fun to watch and judge! I will get a vid made sooner or later. Im thinking about making a measured battle zone . maby a 8ft x 8ft square  and if you step out or are forced out it is a point for your opponent. let me know what you all think ...need ideas.

I would vote for a larger area, maybe something along the lines of kendo's field of play...or perhaps a 16 foot diameter circle, one limb must be in the circle at all times, head shots allowed with adequate protection. something like a fencing mask?  mid-grade blades only.

About the only person off the top of my head that Grave13 could spar with in Kentucky is me. So that's two in the state so far. Been looking for kendo classes for a while. Not many close by.

I'd be down to see a sport made official for saber dueling.

However, it would have to be different from other martial arts and weapon fighting events and it would have to be unique... other than the fact you're using lightsabers.

As a result, doing flashy moves with a cinematic quality should be perfectly allowed and should not be interrupted.

Because, let's be honest here, we're talking about Star Wars, a selection of films and a few animated shows which, in its entirety, was made by Hollywood as a means to entertain audiences. Your mileage may vary, but in the grand scheme of things, (especially since we don't have "real" lightsabers and we don't have the force described in the movies/books/television) lightsaber fighting is flashy, attractive, and is renowned for its often superfluously extravagant movement and style.

As a result, lightsaber fighting shouldn't be anything similar or in relation to any other martial art practice, otherwise it really is just a martial art but with light-up sticks.

Now, I understand many of the films base the combat on actual fighting styles that we know, but again, if we want to be accurate, a real lightsaber wouldn't have as much weight as a Ultrasaber or ForceFX blade, so I think a unique fighting style should be mandatory.

Lastly,
I would only want this sport to exist if and only if, all duels took place on a catwalk of some sort situated over a high expanse with a pit below it that appears bottomless but is in reality filled with inflatable cushions.  Kind of like American Gladiators.
In fact, it pretty much is American Gladiators as contestants would have to make it to the "final opponent" only after progressing through an obstacle course and deflecting tennis balls with their sabers.
Dueling atop a moving train would be nice too, or maybe over a pool of water made to look like lava, but I digress.
