Does anyone know any affective combat techniques that can be used when freestyle dueling with a double-saber that will keep me alive and on top of the mountain?

Ah king of the mountain, a favorite sparring drill of every martial artist.  My personal style is to use one side of the saberstaff until you want to catch your opponent off guard and then whip the other side into action.

Honestly it's terribly difficult to master the use of a saber staff in combat.  Everyone will have a different take.

Cheers.

Man, I know more about how to fight AGAINST one than I do about fighting with one in my hands. Thanks to the Jarhead days I kinda pugil stick the thing around on the rare occasions I actually use one. Protect your hilt. I always take shots at the middle of one when I fight against staff to try to disrupt an opponent's patterns. Let's see, what else... extension and retraction can be your friend. Make your opponent unsure of space and keep him off balance. Staff sabers are intimidating to many, so use that to your advantage.

Yeah, lots of different takes on this subject. Pugil training for us Jarheads are definitely a good take... Basically brute force wins the day there. Bo staff training is good for a lot of things, but you need to translate the techniques.

What type of fighter are you? I.E defensive, offensive, tactical, ect. ect.

a saber staff can be an intimidating weapon to face....and use. its a double-bladed weapon, but still just one weapon. involving both blades in your training is the main challenge, that is, to make effective use of both blades well.  A relatively simple way to begin is to think of assigning roles to your blades; in some guard positions, there is a blade in front of you, and one behind, i'll try to get some images up tonight or tomorrow.
the blade that's oriented towards the enemy can be considered defensive, while the rearward blade can swing into action offensively in the same action. Thinking of using the staff this way can be limiting, but its a good way to use both blades and to start thinking about attack and defense in one motion.
Saberstaffs also excel at the point thrust when used intelligently, given there's quite a bit of hilt to shift your hand position over, changing the distance and angle very rapidly and dramatically. Here, the second blade can become a liability tho, especially if you don't take think ahead.
As far as footwork goes, its best to not square up with the enemy, as your hilt is vulnerable, and often carried centrally. try to think in terms of passing steps to either side of your enemy, so they are always presented with one blade or the other....more to follow.

I'm just cutting out some relatively triangular windows for the blade emitter, but i've got some filing to do to finish the corners.  More or less, it'll look like a capital "A" with a bit more horizontal distance apart on both sides.  I think I'm going to angle the emitter just until about 1/8" above the retention screw line...  I'm going for probably vertical slots like on the War Glaive on the other, but only two, and again, on the sides.

I think I like Guardian Blue, Sentinel Yellow, and Violet Amethyst the best, so I need to buy a few more LED Modules and get some quick releases installed...
