In the  lightsaber fight between Obi Wan and Anakin in ROTS they both used blue lightsabers. I can see why Anakin had to use a blue lightsaber because that way Obi Wan could retrieve it after the fight and pass it down to Luke years later. However, I always thought that the reason the lightsabers were different colors was so that you could tell them apart in fights, therefore having two blue lightsabers would defeat that purpose. They should've worked it out somehow.

Hmm... Interesting point of view.  I actually think it makes the battle THAT much more symbolic of how close they were, and how well they know each other.  Not only is it the fastest-moving duel in the whole saga, and the one where the combatants are the most equal, but now the sabers are the same colors as well.  The saber's color being identical confuses the eye, giving the illusion that this battle may not be a fight between two people, but a single person fighting against himself.  Not only is it Vader vs. Obi-wan, but it is Anakin vs. Vader as well.  Anakin and Obi were so close that Obi-wan becomes the embodiment of Anakin during this fight, and Anakin becomes Vader even literally.

Also, the audiences and the tech had both advanced enough that the saber's color is more symbolic than a literal function.  We know by now that the sabers are personal to each Jedi, and the colors aren't regulated.  And the tech is advanced enough to make the two blades distinct even though they're the same color.

I agree with Kaiden.  Although I love a good classic Blue vs Red or Green vs Red battle, the blue vs blue just made the feeling of two close friends fighting that much more poignant.  Anakin having a blue saber was not only practical (as he wouldn't have built a new saber yet) but also great symbolism - it represents the tragedy of his fall, a reminder of what he once was.  Throughout the fight he shows that he's just a shell of what he once was, a monstrous impostor masquerading as Anakin.  That guise is shattered finally by the loss of his lightsaber and limbs.  When he emerges as the cold, black cyborg Vader with his new red saber, it's the final step away from Anakin and towards the Sith.

I see what you mean. Obviously Anakin/Vader had to use the blue lightsaber in the fight because aof the symbolic value, it symbolized what he once was, and also for Obi Wan to retrieve it so that he can pass it down to Luke in ANH. Also, Obi Wan retrieving it could be seen as Obi Wan keeping the last of what was left of his former student and friend, aside from the obvious plot necessity of Luke inheriting it. I was thinking, though, that perhaps Obi Wan could've used a green lightsaber in the fight so that the swords would be different colors and as to why Obi Wan would be using a green lightsaber instead of his regular blue lightsaber could be worked into the story somehow. Also, I was hoping that at the end of ROTS that there would be a small scene showing cyborg Vader with the red lightsaber, such a scene could be like the unused scene in ROTJ where Luke builds his green lightsaber.

or they couldve switched the story around to show why obiwan is using a green. at the end, yoda mentions that he has training for obi ( to communicate with qui gon) they couldve somehow made this happen earlier, or show qui gon confront them  in the jedi  temple. i read that obi wan has kept qui gons saber when he  died. maybe obi could have used it to remind anakin of qui gon, and for his own personal use.
just a thought

Except that in ep. 4, Obi is using a blue saber as well.  I know he could've changed the color in between there, but I sorta doubt it.  Both of the sabers need to be blue for the next episode.

This reminds me of a very interesting issue...

(We're Going To Use A Vid That Gives Vader A Red Blade During The Duel Because... It's So Much More Epic That Way Wink!!!)

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4puaVsdKUuk" target="_blank" class="aeva_link bbc_link new_win">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4puaVsdKUuk</a>

Now what your going to want to do is pay VERY CLOSE ATTENTION to the lightsaber in the hand of Vader (Starting In 1:14) and Watch As The Lightsaber "Magically" Changes From Obi Wan's Hilt To Vader's Hilt...

(You Can Clearly See That It Is Vader's Saber In Vader's Hand In 1:20, As Compared To What Was Obi-Wan's Saber In Vader's Hand In 1:14)

(If You Look Very Closely... You Will See The Change... and Think To Yourself: "Wait A Second... Vader Didn't Pick Up His Saber and Drop Obi-Wan's In That Short of a Time")

I have never been able to figure out how this got passed the editors, and my only guess is that this is the result of multiple takes, and the splicing together of different takes...

I'll get you for this... if it's my last post on this forum... (evil Ani emo sneer)

Jk.  I've always kinda liked the red-bladed version of that fight, even if I do think the double-blue is more poetic.

I Completely See What You Mean About The Dualistic Blue Being More Poetic Though Wink!!!  and I'm Always A Fan of Sith Lord's Using Different Colored Blades Other Than Just Red  Cool!!!

Well Obi was standing at the edge of the hill, and to land on the slope of the hill would put him off-balance and below Obi at the same time.  Obi would still win that fight.  Attempting to move to either side of Obi would give Obi time to adjust and the same result occurs.  To my reasoning, and what I assume would be his reasoning as well, his only options are...
1.  Attempt to jump over Obi which will be quite the feat.  In his arrogance, he believes that this will be no problem for him.
2. Give up the fight and retreat.  Not an option for someone so embroiled in their hatred.
3. Jump to another place which will result in Obi-wan having even more time to prepare.

And you missed Darth Revan:  (I'm surprised you let him slip by, Wraith)
