I enjoyed it a lot. I watched in a relatively small screen (maybe 200 people) and all of them seemed to be fans. I avoided all spoilers as much possible going in, so had no expectations, no preconceptions about what it 'should' be.

Seeing Luke as a teacher was entertaining. I look forward to his third lesson, presumably in Episode IX rather than just being missed! (Unless I missed it...)

Leia in space was okay, I think. I got what they were going for, re-establishing Leia as a Force user, even if not a trained Jedi. That set up the ending, with her being so strongly attuned to Luke.

Luke Shocked The film led up to that, I felt, but even so it was still so affecting to see him come to that point. Anyone notice the footprints (or lack thereof...) during the final fight?

Snoke's robes had me thinking of Hugh Hefner. Anyone else? But clearly very powerful - his treatment of Hux and the way he toyed with Rey really established him as an absolute beast, strength wise.

The salt planet was such a stunning backdrop for the final fight. The billowing red clouds really added to the spectacle of the final showdown.

Is Kylo lying about Rey's parents? The way he delivered those lines made me wonder - rushed, almost stumbling, and seemingly a deliberate resonance with Luke's comment about how nobody comes from nowhere.

Laura Dern! So, so good. I had no idea she was in it at all.

Where were the Knights of Ren? I was sure one of the few things I saw was that they'd be in the film. Perhaps they were the Imperial Guards? That scene, incidentally, was downright awesome, and really played with my expectations for how Ren/Rey would go from that point.

Phasma got stuff to do! And given that her armour has been established as super-strong, I'm sure she'll be back. Similarly, Hux got some good stuff as well. In fact, I thought the new characters (Finn, Poe, Rey, Rose) all got good arcs over the course of the film. That was pleasing. Finn's evolution in caring about more than just Rey was well done, I thought.

It did break with certain established rules, but then, the rules are there to be broken. A lot of the criticism of TFA was that it cleaved too closely to the structure of ANH, albeit with two Lukes! TLJ definitely felt like its own film, albeit with some obvious nods to ESB/the others and I wouldn't be surprised if IX is even more diverse.

A couple of things I'd have liked to see slightly differently was to have a greater percentage of non-human Resistance members. There only seemed to be a handful among them, which seemed odd. I also could have done without the milking scene! Finally, the scene at the end with Poe and Rey seemed curious - whether they're being set up as a future couple, or just for tension with Rose/Finn... Well, we'll see.

Overall, thumbs very much up. I'll let it settle in my mind some more before seeing it again, maybe in the New Year.

I think the Knights of Ren will be joining Star Wars 9 to create a more apt menace together with Kylo Ren against the Resistance and the Jedi. Because I strongly believe that those are the Padawans that Kylo took with him from Luke's academy before he burnt down the rest. I don't think they were the elite praetorian guards.

Alright fanboys.. I know your joysticks all are broken up and hanging low, but boo hoo if the whole star wars universe that you know got turned on it's head.

My first thought: thank you! Finally, bury the freaking past of this whole grand notion of old republic, ancient scripture, blah blah blah! Yoda himself delivers the line to all fanboys.. just meaningless words.. it's not about the past anymore.. that's the point of the WHOLE film. It's not about looking back, trying to see what worked before. Look for new angles.

What bugged me: was kinda long and drawn out.. like, empty storylines. I didn't care for Rose, to be honest. Got on my nerves. That whole mission to the casino was a failure, didn't work, served no purpose, in the end, and bleh, waste of time.

Snoke didn't bug me. What bugs me is this. I mean, holy spit! When he got it, I was like oh man!! But that's it?! This build up of who's Snoke and that's it?? No, refuse to accept that. Phasma, she's gone.. like, build up of a character and she was out. Knights of Ren are nowhere to be seen or mentioned.. only hint you get is Ben took "a handful of his students" and left.. you assume it's the knights..

And Rey's parents, yes.. I think he's lying.. but, it's not too far off to believe that even the lowest rung of a person could rise up. Like the boy at the very end, force grabbing the broom stick. It's in many people. You don't have to have a lineage, just have to have the force in you. She is strong, and "the chosen one" saber is broken.. she needs a new one.. where will she construct a new one, and who will help her.. Luke is dead, but will still guide her.

Luke's spirit fight with Kylo was f'n awesome.. was like, "you think you got me, oh no..I go out on my terms" I didn't cry, but was definitely sad. I really didn't expect Luke to die, but, I knew something was up.. how did he have the chosen one saber? And hair cut? Beard was browned and not gray? So I knew something was up..

Was a great ending, like Rogue One.. just the middle, eh.. very interested in what the hell is going to happen from here, cuz it's totally unpredictable from this point on

I loved the movie.  I'm not going to pick it apart and analyze it into the ground because that's not my style.  Either I liked it or I didn't.  I loved this.  My favorite part was definitely the battle between Luke and Ren.  I thought I was looking at Obi-Wan Kenobi for a second, I swear.  VERY happy with Luke!  I also loved Leia's use of the Force in space.  You can fight me.

But what got me the most was the curious parallel between Leia's injuries and Carrie Fisher's death.  I walked out with a very eerie feeling.  Not necessarily an unpleasant one, just an "aware" one.  I realize this has nothing to do with the plot of the movie, but it struck me so I'm mentioning it.

Considering how much I despised "Rogue One," I feel like this made up for it.

I enjoyed the movie as a whole, and probably would put it ahead of TFA. That being said, there are a couple of things that I really didn't like. The whole detour with Finn and Rose... it accomplished nothing. Maybe that boy at the end had something to do with Episode IX, but it seemed like way too complex of a detour just to show that boy at the end for five seconds. Also, Rey. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy her character a lot. But Luke Skywalker, the most powerful Jedi in the galaxy, had 10 times the amount of training from Yoda as Rey did from Luke, but Luke can't even come close to beating Vader in Empire. Rey on the other hand, is able to have the exact same skills as Kylo Ren in lightsaber combat (fight with Snoke's guards) and basically the same force abilities (splitting Anakin/Luke's lightsaber in half). Kylo Ren was vigorously trained by Luke prior to turning to the dark side, but Rey is just discovering her powers, is barely trained, and yet can still do everything she did? It just seems like too much in my opinion. Oh, and Leia in space. Not a fan of that. Other than those points, I did like the movie and will be seeing it again just to analyze it more.

So I know that Kylo was lying about Rey's parents.he said that his parents sold him the ungar for money for drugs/booze. If she was sold to him, then why was she not a slave. She lived on her own. She took care of herself. He would have sold her long ago. So he must be hiding her true lineage. I loved the movie and enjoyed the comedy. I felt that is poe'scharacter. It was like in tfa when he meets kylo and is screwing with him with The Who speaks first line and joking about his mask. I was bummed that smoke turned out to be a red herring but the fight scenes were epic and I loved the new force powers. Plus yoda being yoda. Straight making fun of Luke. Plus anyone catch that Rey took the books and they were onboard the falcon?

I just got back from seeing it.  It was awesome!!!!  I liked it better than TFA.  They answered some questions and had me asking others that hopefully will be answered in Episode IX.  There were some parts that seemed off but nothing that ruined the experience for me.  Why did the First Order play with the Resistance by lobbing shots from a distance instead of just running up on them and blasting them out of the stars.  The movie would have been over within a half hour so I am happy they didn't.
As for Rey's parents, maybe Ben is lying. Cool

Yeah, the ancient books are definitely in the Falcon. I noticed that the first time, and paid special attention, based on this thread, during my second viewing. While I still have some of the same objections, I did enjoy it more the second time around.

A lot of people seem to either love it or hate it. I really liked it (minus what I pointed out). How did it ruin Star Wars? Because they took it in a new direction? There were some plot holes, and maybe some unnecessary humor, but it was much more put together than the prequels, and even had an original story. Just curious how some people hate it so much.

I totally understand hating a Star Wars movie.  I can't even begin to tell you the level of dislike I have for a couple of them, but I feel like it's going to be difficult to please everyone.  Sometimes, they make movies I love and sometimes, I'm lukewarm to cold about them.  It happens.  It will happen again.  I'm actually nervous about Rian having his own "trilogy" that is not going to be related to anything we know and love at all, but I'm willing to give it a shot!

P.S.  I love that Hux got totally wrecked in this film.  His smarmy ass deserved it.   Cheesy

Generally excellent, enjoyed it. Definitely better than TFA. Liked everything except, main gripe - Snoke is killed. This leaves a long list of potentially unanswered questions unless they do some explanation in Episode 9. They cannot just kill of the evil mastermind, founder of the First Order just like that with so much unanswered.

Only one negative I have was I thought the first 3rd of the movie ran slow, but I think the rest made up for it.

I thought the humor and Leia in space can both be blamed on Marvel.

Was happy to see Luke's hero saber in the movie Smiley

When Luke was fighting Kylo I thought Luke's saber gave away something was not right since it had just exploded in two a few scenes earlier. As mentioned above also the lack of foot prints. They did a good job of making me think "wait a minute" but still not knowing exactly what was happening.

Over all I rant enjoyed the movie!
