So, gals and guys ... What about this new episode??

Did you like it? love it? hate it? Have you been pleased or disappointed?

Let us know and, because we are all nerdzzz, let's debate Wink

Let be honest, i spent a good time when watching the movie ... many things are goods and there are a lot of good surprises (Kylo and Rey)

But in the same time, i was soooooo disappointed by a lot of things too ... (Leia ... what did Johnson do with our Leia ?? WTF ?? )

I am going to watch it a 2nd time soon ... hope i will not focus on these disappointing points Tongue

a lot of surprises by Rey and Kylo.

They indeed did some for star wars first moments (leia, haldo, luke) all did things we've never seen before in the Star Wars Cinematic canon

Luke using a spiritual form of himself to battle Kylo and distract him, so everyone could get away.
Leia using the force.. whut? did not see that coming. Well it was known she is force sensitive, but still.
Haldo offering herself by going lightspeed at Snoke's ship. Was an amazing moment, the silence and then, BOOOM.

Did NOT expect Snoke to die so easy, arrogance killed him. He could have killed them both if he wanted to.

Kylo and Rey seem kinda equal in power, but now Rey has to build a new lightsaber, wonder what it would look like

I liked it, had some very good and intense moments, but also some comedy bits. I'd give it an 8 out of 10.

my Ranking thus far:

1. Revenge Of The Sith
2. The Empire Strikes Back
3. The Last Jedi
4. The Return Of The Jedi
5. A New Hope
6. The Force Awakens
7. Rogue One
8. The Phantom Menace
9. Attack Of The Clones

Might be because I grew up with the prequel trilogy before watching the originals. When I was 14 they kinda bored me because they weren't that flashy.
Learned to appreciate them but to me episode 3 was the big reveal of Anakin being Darth Vader. So that movie stuck with me that way.

Now to wait for Solo a Star Wars story

The character of Benicio del Toro is awesome ... just a normal traitor ... selfish ... one of the good surprises of this movie Wink

I love also the message with the boy in the end Wink

You know, Ep. 7 was disappointing for me and i am still not fan of the new canon story line but this movie, Ep. 8 is good, i spent a good time ... and just remove "Leia in space" and it could be a very good movie Wink

Oh, and now that we saw clearly Snokes, i have a theory and i think we will see him again Wink

Overall I thought it was ok.

I'm an OT kind of guy,  all the way, but there were definitely things I enjoyed about the prequels. I really enjoyed TFA, because I felt like SW needed a hard reset to get back to what made it so special. Even if it meant borrowing heavily upon (copying) ANH. I feel like TFA succeeded in doing that. It felt like a SW movie. I say all that to just give you an idea as to where my standards are.

The Negatives:

• I felt like the the first act was just over the top. With everything. BB-8 had too many new features, like shooting the coins and blowing the smoke, the stick that can split about 30 times, etc. There was too much humor, too many Porgs, etc. Especially the humor. I began to wonder if I was seeing a comedy movie set in the SW universe.
• Leia in space. No. No. No. No. Nope. No. I'm fine with her surviving that attack, but not like that. Again, too much.
• The CGI. SW has always been a benchmark of special effects. This one let me down. It began to feel like the prequels. In particular, the Leia in space scene, the casino sequences, and the pilots in the ships during the opening space battle. They all looked cartoonish. I'd rather not see them through the cockpit than to see them the way they looked. There were times that Snoke looked bad. So did Yoda. The CGI, although not terrible, is probably my biggest disappointment.
• Rey's parents. "Lies, deceit, creating mistrust are his ways." I hope that's the case with her parents. The overall story arc has always been about the Skywalkers, and with one movie to go, it may still end up being that way, but I will be disappointed if Rey is the last one standing, and her parents are nobodies. I'm still holding out hope for this one, but for now, I have to go with the information I have, and I don't like that, because it ventures too far.
• Stop calling them laser swords. They're lightsabers. The only time it was a nice homage to their original draft script name was when Anakin said it in TPM. That name was spoken by an uninitiated child, which made it ok, but I cringe when I hear Jedi like Luke or Kanan call them laser swords. So, Disney, please stop, or I'll start calling him Mortimer Mouse. Got it?

The Positives:

• I love that Kylo went full tilt and smoked Snoke. Good for him. That's how Dark Siders should do it.
• I like that they are expanding on Force abilities. Being able to clearly see and communicate with others the way Rey and Kylo did was a good addition to something already established. To think that generations would pass without skill evolution is nonsense. And how Luke used it? Brilliant!
• The humor, although at times too much, was good. "Sacred ground! Watch your language." That was funny.
• The fight sequences for this trilogy have been some of my favorite. The OT, while being far more realistic as to what an avtual sword fight would look like, seemed to be too pedestrian and beginner level to pass as master duelists, but the prequels were too over the top with their flash (mirrored Obi-Anis in a fight to the death, really?). This trilogy seems to strike that balance. There is enough flash to make you believe the skill level is high, but there is also enough grit to make it pass as believable. And Rey's lightsaber pass to Kylo who ignited it in the face of the guard? Yeah, that was bad ass.
• Benicio del Toro. Whatever his character's name was, I loved him. That's a scoundrel! I'm wanting him to show up and be a fly in someone's ointment in Episode 9.
• Luke. Let's back up a second and face reality. Luke, Han, and Leia were all going to have to die if the franchise was going to continue past this trilogy. The fan base won't accept a SW where the big 3 don't fight, unless they are dead. The rest of the characters would simply be in their shadow, because those charactets would still be alive to cast them. We have to accept that, and we should have known this going in. Back to Luke. I'm a bit on the fence for this one. I don't like how Luke lost his faith and turned tail. He was never one to back down from a fight, so it seems out of character. That being said, when he was convinced that it was the only option, he did showed Kylo who the true master was. The death scene was beautiful and perfect. It was a nice blend of Obi-Wan's and Yoda's passing. Those elements are what tipped it to a positive for me.

My walk away reaction was "What the f*** did I just watch?"  It wasn't a bad movie, I certainly liked parts, (Luke especially) but overall I'd say I didn't like it as my initial reaction.  Maybe after I see it again....

Fun that we have almost the same feeling about this Ep. 8

I also think that Kylo lies to Rey about her parents ...

I loved Benicio's character but i did not enjoyed scenes on the Casino Planet ....

I preferred my 2nd watch as disappointing points (Leia in space .... NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO) was known and i was able to enjoy and spent a good time

I found myself laughing a lot when I don't think I was supposed to.  I felt like it broke too many unwritten Star Wars rules.

Snoke was just Snoke, no big deal. That leaves the most evil villain in all of Star Wars as Darth Sidious. As it should.  Wink

To me, Snoke looks like an unfinished clone ... who considered himself as a master and searched for his new Vador ...

« Reply #14 on: December 15, 2017, 01:31:17 PM »

Negative:
- Too much slapstick, mostly in the first half of the film (Poe calling Hux).
- Rey's miracle escape and deus ex machina after the fight of will with Kylo Ren. They could have shown more what happend to her between the scenes.
- Highspeed romance of Finn and Rose, didn't feel genuine. If Finn would have sacrificed himself, that would have been a better ending.
- BB-8 saves the day one time too much.
- Very underused Phasma, I really hope her armour survives the fire.
- Too predictable sometimes -> Snoke's death.

Positive:
- Luke: I would say his character developement is even better than Kylo Ren's. Loved the two sides of the story how he basically created his own downfall and the beginning of the Knights of Ren.
- Leia: Sovereign and at least she clearly has the force. Carrie Fisher will be dearly missed.
- Holdo: Best badass goodie! Loved her. Maybe I will cosplay her.
- Rey: This girl is too cool for a romance, keep up the good game! Rey conflicted (like Kylo) but turning clearly to the light side was masterfully done. Please let her parents be nobodies.
- Kylo Ren: Shirtless Kylo fanservice ^^ And of course: The supreme leader is dead, long lives the supreme leader! With force choke and black veins. If he stays on the dark side in 9, even if killed, he clearly surpassed Darth Vader as a villain.
