A few months ago I brought in an ultrasaber set to my Shaolin school just to play around with, and the Shifu there ended up giving it a spin:

After some discussion and brainstorming, they decided that it may be a fun class to do. We had a pilot class this past Friday and it went very well. This coming Friday will be the first real class with it, and anyone interested is welcome to come!

Hello Everyone,

How about a fun and unique way to spend a Friday night with sabers and a Shaolin disciple?

Shaolin Saber Club, hosted by Shaolin Kung Fu Training Center, will be taught by 35th generation Shaolin disciple Shifu Hengxin.

The 1st meet up and class is Friday, March 22nd from 7:30P to 8:30P at 109 W.27th Street - Studio 2B, Between 6th & 7th Aves.

Adults only (18+) and it will be $20 at the door.

Martial arts training, weapons training or being a great athlete is not necessary. Just bring your spirit of fun and adventure and a willingness to swing a saber around. Wear comfortable clothes you can move in, but no street shoes allowed in the studio, so wear socks you can train in or indoor sports shoes. There will be a limited number of short staffs that you can borrow, but it's best if you bring your own saber (lit or not), to make sure you have a weapon to practice with.

So if you want to use a saber, with a Shaolin twist, come out and join us!

Shaolin Kung Fu Training Center
CLARITY. CONFIDENCE. COURAGE.

Since this is a new class, we only have perhaps two sabers to spare. It'd be ideal if you brought your own saber, but worst case they have a lot of wooden stick swords that you can practice with. If this class is successful, it could become a regular thing. Would anyone be interested in coming this week or the following weeks?  Grin

It was a lot of fun! They just put up a short clip of a short combination we did. I'm surprised how fast the hour went.

Got a really nice video of a form we're working on:

Since it's getting crowded in the Friday class, we're beginning to do it on Saturdays as well. This weekend will be the first one, and it'll be free.

Hi there, first time posting here. Just wanted to pop in here and say that I attended the Shaolin Saber Club class for the first time last night and was very impressed! Coming from a southern Shaolin background, I really liked the structure of the class and got a great workout, as well. If there was an actual Jedi Temple, I feel this would be very close to what they would teach. Smiley Basic lightsaber twirls and strikes were covered, with and without forward and backward movement, and there is even a Shaolin-infused lightsaber form, which I LOVED watching performed! I am looking forward to seeing how partner drills are covered and learning the entire saber form.

I would definitely recommend checking this class out!

It's been almost a year, so I decided to put together our various clips into a montage! Ben and I are both in there somewhere Wink

How easy would this be for a complete novice to understand? This sounds like a blast

P.S. Any way this could be offered in New Jersey? ;-)

It does take some practice, nothing worthwhile is easily gained Smiley. The sessions are an hour once a week, and I think after a few months you'd get the basics down, with a lot of finessing left to do. Everyone learns at their own pace though, and in the end it's all about having fun.

No plans for NJ at the moment, but we are thinking of doing an outing in the forest so maybe we'll take a trip eventually!
