Who has the better babysitting record/experience/references that are verifiable?

My point in playing Sith's advocate is more to force a consideration of a wider point of view, rather than necessarily saying Sith good, Jedi Bad or vice versa.

And without buttering your bread, you have done this quite well.

I have made every attempt to stay on Jedi target with the same level of commitment.

In truth I am far more Gray than Light, and in real life have been quite near if not well over the wall several times...walking the dark side as it were.

But as I see few people defending the Jedi as per loyal to the core, I took it up.

Unshakable.

Some one has to do it lol.

If we all accept everything then there would be no sides and no distinction beyond the acts themselves, which would have merit unto itself.

The ideals of the color factions from my Lantern's thread for example...just because Red uses the power found in fury, rage, and anger...this does not mean they are evil...certainly there would be evil in there...I could see the red light drawing them like moths to candles...but those emotions do not dictate evil.

Just as the White...growth and regeneration...this does not mean they all would be good...fertilizer is great for making things grow...return to the earth and all that...I could see a lawful evil character hiding among the white, knowing his was the right way...

So I am not caught up in dogma per say, I just play that way on TV  Smiley

It is the actions and comments of people (sith) that catch me off guard at times...and this stirs me up a bit...I get in the cage...and then I am fine for a while lol.

Glass half full or half empty...the endless debate.

So why are you being so dogmatic if it's not how you really believe? Undecided

I think people like to play with the dark side because they can't really do all the things the Sith do without ending up in jail or dead. That kind of power is a heady thing, really... some people might let it run away with them. I really prefer a challenge, personally, and I find there is more challenge to control of the self than there is in control of what is around you, so that's why I Jedi.

I find it absolutely amazing that you have read through this thread, and make a comment on the last thing I say.

I, as a person realize that I do not live in the Star Wars galaxy and that I am not a Jedi.

I, as a forum mate on the Ultra Sabers site, I have found myself falling into a niche of having to defend the Jedi and while it can be a bit tiresome I still do it because it is a good thing to aspire to.

I firmly believe that just about anything in real life is black and white.  Period.  After the important issues have been dealt with then there is room for gray and for color.

Right and wrong.  Black and white.

I, as far as Rel the forum person, I am all about the Jedi of canon...human, fallible, yet willing to sacrifice anything for the purist reason...because it is the right thing to do.

Dogma, because if I did not defend the purist ideal of what the Jedi represent then all the wishy washy in between the lines non-committal types would rule...and as a Star Wars purist...I was first in line, for the first showing of Star Wars in 1977...that does not make me old, it means I was luckier than some...I got to experience the core of what we all share now, first hand...so of course I will see it differently.  My first experience with Star Wars was not a couple years ago.

I will always be on board that Jedi are good and sith are bad...if you do not want to ride along with me, that is fine, really it is.

I am just a curious person by nature.  I am a born troubleshooter, when I see a problem I will ask and act if possible...hence all my question threads...I gather information, opinions, and thoughts...it helps me understand those who are different.

Dogma, because I believe that Jedi are good...I accept.

*****

In some cases there will come times that people will just not agree...can not agree...I will never accept that the Jedi ideal is wrong, evil, or other beyond good.

A steak is red meat...you can not convince me it is actually soy.

An apple is a fruit...you can not convince me it is a meatball.

And Jedi are good...you can not convince me otherwise...that said...beyond the black and white or good and evil...I can readily accept that there are shades of what good is...with many characters acting with human nature, meaning we fail from time to time...character of self is built upon successes and failures...not all Jedi are completely successful, but at the core, they all try to be...and that is worth supporting.

I think the Jedi are meant to represent good, and that the Sith are meant to represent evil - but that within that falls a spectrum of characters, personae, and motivations.

Black and white is not how I like to look at things - playing in the gray areas is where drama occurs, and memorable stuff happens.

Honestly? Do you really believe that Luke Skywalker was evil? Yoda? Leia? Mara? Or are you speaking in character?

Though the republic, and the Jedi did come corrupt. Thus the need for the Galactic Empire. It's all in Darth Plageus, it gives new light to the Sith, in my point of view.

I thought the Galactic Empire was a result of Anakin not fulfilling his destiny by staying to balance the Force (which was a really bad decision down the road - even directly and negatively affecting his family [and the universe] two generations later Roll Eyes).

I for one just think Sith have more fun! Besides, if the Sith were not around, what would the Jedi do?  Wink I play as a Sith on SWTOR, yet I am Light Side. Funny how no matter how hard I try at being "Evil" I always end up being the good guy! LOL!  Grin

Jedi were loosly based on the Buddhists and Samurai. The subtext of ANH hints that the Jedi became indolent in their supremacy and let their guard down. They paid for that by being destroyed. Lesson against arrogance.

The other problem is that they were invented as a plot device to give the hero a way into the rebellion and give him a quest. Obiwan and Yoda are the only two remaining (in the movie) so it was almost like they were the Sith at that time. They represented the cause of freedom, peace, and generosity to contrast that of the cold hearted Empire. they were hopelessly outnumbered and yet turned the tide.

In the prequels and Clone Wars, that dynamic is different, the Jedi being the "order" of the Galaxy and representative of the status quo, thus making it easy to see how they could become corrupt. Especially during wartime. If you look at either like a black or white character, I don't see a whole lot of dynamic for story telling. Good beats bad, yadda yadda.

All this talk of good and evil seems pretty overtly simplistic. We have to assume that the "bad" guys think they are "good". Everybody thinks they are the hero, not the villain.

The Fanged God actually knew he was evil, but that's a different conversation entirely.... anyway.... I definitely see your point about them not being completely black-and-white characters. That would make everything boring as hell and nobody would have any sort of interesting characteristics.

A few relevant quotes:

"No man chooses evil because it is evil; he only mistakes it for happiness, the good he seeks." -Mary Wollstonecraft

"No man is clever enough to know all the evil he does." -Francois de La Rochefoucauld

"As soon as men decide that all means are permitted to fight an evil, then their good becomes indistinguishable from the evil that they set out to destroy." -Christopher Dawson (This, IMO, sums up what happened to the Old Jedi Order)

"The sad truth is that most evil is done by people who never make up their minds to be good or evil." -Hannah Arendt
