Hi guys ! So, as I'm still working on my light-naginata project, I think it is good for some persons to see how a fight between this weapon and a casual saber looks like. This video was performed by one of my sensei's at the Japan Expo... Enjoy !

Hebi! Great to hear from you! Can't wait to see how your light-naginata turns out. Will it have the traditional curved blade? Or will it be more of a light-yari? I'm really looking forward to this! (Mostly because nobody cares about combat around here any more).
Come back soon!
Cheers.

I agree with Kham! The main reason I'm on here is because US are the Combat Lightsaber Specialists Anyways, I'm really looking forward to seeing the light naginata. I looooove naginata! So much fun to use.

Well, good to see so much enthousiasm !
It is true that the reason I came here first was to obtain sabers suitable for fighting with.
About my naginata, as it will be my first production, I will probably stick to a straight blade... I'll made another one with a curved blade -^ And optic fibers inside, for the light to follow the curve. But the length of the hilt and of the blade will be the same as on my Shiai-Yo Naginata, so I'll be able to train with at my club.
Problems I am encountering : how to stick the blade into the stick without damaging the aspect and solidity, and how to put the electronics inside... (also, what electronics to chose, and THAT is one of my greatest problems)

A longer grip blade is much preferred for me! I have been mulling over the design aspects for the same, myself. The standard naginata has a 1:2.5 to 1:4 blade to staff length. I worked with the full length wooden one for some time, much like this one But an opportunity to use a broken one seemed to fit me better, much closer to this size or 1:1 blade to hilt...like this scale I am liking this Lord of the Rings High elf two handed style...the high curve hilt but a straight blade for now

This is going to be the issue. I would consider using a long run of fiber optics as you mention with the light emitter at the base. A groove to inset the optical cable along the length...perhaps fine cord or heavy thread wrap along the length (make a simple lathe with a power drill on sloooooow and it will feed itself...take about 4-5 minutes)...then any power units on your person with a removable power clip or at the base. The advantage of extending the electronics is there is not much room in most naginata blade connection points and the impacts will be more dramatic due to the length and snap inertia. Sounds like fun.

Once you get it finished, I would love to see a video of a fight involving a regular light saber and yours. I love weapons and love to see things that I do not usually get to see. Thanks for posting and keep us updated.

I would like to see it also I am going to build mine, for sure...but there are no other players around me. Being in Texas is not enough...this is a huge state, you do not realize how large until it takes nearly 8hrs one way to get Dallas for me and that is not even a wide stretch. I will have to recruit some fellow saber types. On a side note, does Ultra offer any group purchase discounts? I think their prices are good, just asking. I maybe able to get handful, 5-6, with my martial arts connections. It would be fun.

I had asked about possible group discounts for a friend's upcoming marriage (before that idea got shot down). Anyhow, if you email Ultrasabers, they will give you more information directly. I would post the response I got, but the policy may have changed since I asked, and I don't want to give bad info.
The naginata idea sounds interesting. How large do you plan to make the blade in comparison to the staff/hilt? And with the need to have the blade be hollow to accept the light from the LED, will the thickness of the blade throw off the weapon at all?

See that? 'Tis the Ultra Yari. Similar in style of combat in its half staff form, I guess. The first thing you have to do is come to terms with the reach. The best thing I can tell you is to stop its movement and try to get inside its arcs, and that's still iffy depending on your weapons, plus I like to show fake gaps with my Yari to try to lure an unsuspecting duelist in.

For some reason I had an idea of a spear-like blade, rather than saber style. Wonder why my brain went there.
And the yari looks pretty excellent! The reach on that has to be impressive, not to mention the bracing power one would get being able to keep one's hands further apart. That's one thing I really enjoy about the Dark War Glaive - and the hilt on that is TINY by comparison to your yari.

Close to the size I was considering...perhaps that minus 8-10" on the staff/hilt section. Cool stuff. Have you considered wrapping with cord or thread to break up all that brown?

So, I had a look on the internet I founded optic fibers, so I'll be able to buy some. For the Blade, I was thinking of using a TCSS blade, or one from US, but I don't know how to curve it ! For the electronics, I think I'll buy a TCSS kit : http://www.ultrasabers.com/Build-Your-Own-Seoul-P4-Electronics-Kit-P469.aspx And, about the naginata I am using currently, it is this one : http://www.ninecircles.co.uk/Wooden_Weapons__Shinai/Jo,_Bo__Naginata/Shiai_Yo_Naginata_-_225cm.aspxHebi
