Hello !  first I'd like to thank anyone reading/commenting on this thread.

1: Where I live, there is little to no martial arts school. Cry  So my question to the community is,  Are instructional videos worth looking into ? Specifically Tai Chi Chuan. It's been a art I've wanted to get into, but no schools remotely close to me.

2: If so does anyone have any suggestions on what ones I should look into ? and by whom ?

Actual in-person instruction is always better than learning from a video, but I understand your predicament.  If there are no options within reasonable driving distance (for me that's around 45 minute drive max), it would be fine to learn from videos.

Just understand that it's more difficult, as you don't have anyone to critique you as you go.

What if he was able to record himself demonstrating what he his learning from the videos and posted them here?

Yeah, videos should be your absolute last option for learning ANYTHING. Take it from experience. I tried learning guitar from internet videos for nearly a year, before I decided to return to one on one lessons. It was very difficult, and I didn't get very far before getting frustrated. I'm doing MUCH better now that I'm in lessons again. Just food for thought.

He could do that if he wanted.  It still wouldn't be as useful as having an instructor there...

Also, does anyone here have extensive experience in Tai Chi Chuan?  If so then I guess this could work, but otherwise I don't think it would do him much good.

Well the closest class is a little under 2hrs away from me, and my neighbors are literally cattle ! and I LOVE it where I live  lmao,   but anyways...between gas and instructor fees. that's more than I can afford atm.

Yeah I gotcha man.  If you really wanna learn it, then by all means do what you can.  I don't have any personal recommendations for vids, but hopefully somebody more knowledgeable about that sort of thing can help.

Good luck!

What's bad about the Tai Chi videos is that a lot of them are not made for people wanting to learn martial arts, but more for people looking for a therapeutic means to stay healthy.

Now that doesn't mean the techniques aren't there. The techniques stay the same, but without someone to teach you the application of the technique it makes things difficult. My suggestion is find a video that is for the martial arts aspect of Tai Chi, and not just the therapeutic purposes.

Most Tai Chi videos I know of are "exercise fad of the month" type videos. I'm sure it's possible to find a good martial arts instruction one, but probably not very easy.

If you are interested in chinese style sword play, I would recommend "The Major Methods of Wudang Sword"  or "Chinese Swordsmanship: The Yang Family Taiji Jian Tradition". the second book is by Scott Rodell who is very famous in the Jian world.  He has a center in Washington DC, where he teaches as well as seminars across the country.  There has been an resurgence in Chinese sword play of late and I believe they are even holding tournements now.  His site is

not sure if he has video tours but his books are quite good
