Hey all,

Me and a small group of friends recently discovered Ultrasabers as we started to meet weekly to saber fight, and wanted a higher quality lightsaber. Now we have 3 ultrasabers in the group, with more on their way!

Learning to fight has been a blast so far and I can't wait to learn more, but I currently have a sparring related equipment question.

I fight with Form II, a very fencing influenced style. So far, I reliably get hit in my thumb multiple times per night by my opponents because of this. My knuckles and fingertips also take a beating. I haven't been hurt seriously or anything, but the blows do sting and ache for days after.

So, are there any padded/protective gloves people here would recommend? All the ones I've found so far have poor protection, or don't offer any protection for your thumb other than covering it with some fabric.

Check your local motorcycle shop... You can find things with protective coverings ranging from padding, to molded plastic, to carbon fiber knuckles. That or check out mechanix gloves.. they can have some good stuff

Or you could look at gloves particularly designed for sword combat, such as Revival's sparring gloves or even lacrosse gloves.

But I wanted to share this link with you, as it may be useful:

Thanks for the contribution Jenny, great stuff!

As a fellow Form II stylist, I know how you feel.  Typically though, due to my style, I end up hitting other people on the hands more often than not.  The gf is not too fond of this tactic though, so I try to avoid it...

Just curious, do you have fencing experience?

Thanks for the links!

I may break down and try one of those revival gloves, my poor thumb/knuckles are very annoyed at me.  May check the local motorcycle shop and sporting shop first though.

Sadly I have no former fencing experience, despite always loving rapiers/fencing, but now that we have a small LED saber group going some of our members who actually have been trained in fencing
are teaching me. Along with me studying videos/etc on my own.

I kinda fell into form II without anyone telling me what it was at first, though. It's just how I naturally fight. I love it and it seems to have interesting dynamics when myself or another form II user goes against our much more aggressive members. But, sadly, my hand is abused often because of this. I just want something with knuckle and even more importantly, full thumb protection. Heavy grade blade impacts hurt!

You know, I might go so far as to recommend you look into getting a pair of Kendo Kote.  They're far more padded, and built for sword practice.  But they're also made for getting hit with shinai, not polycarbonate blades.  You might look for SCA steel gauntlets.  Your hands are precious, and you've only got to break a thumb once to regret it the rest of your life.

I agree, hands are precious. If you go with something that isn't specifically designed for swordplay. Make sure you check it for functionality, if there is a return policy you can always take it home, and check it out. If not make sure it's adequately armored in the places you want it to be. As Jenny said though the sword gear is the best, just make sure what you get will work for you.

I like motorcycle gear because I ride as well, so I'm not just spending money on armor I'm only going to use for one thing. I've had friends wear some of the mechanix gloves I have, and I have to let them know when I hit them on the hands. They are just that padded up, shop around and make sure you get the best bang for your buck so to speak.

I have a pair of Mylec Street Hockey gloves that work great for this.

They sell on Ebay for ~$45 a pair.

Little update, went shopping before our saber group met today and picked these up!

http://www.sportsauthority.com/product/index.jsp?productId=11755602&cp=694177&view=all&parentPage=family

Used them for around 3 hours tonight in heavy dueling, took many hand hits and never felt anything. Only way I knew was because of sound.

Plenty of mobility, full thumb protection. Awesome gloves. Smiley

Your recommendations are very much appreciated Jenny.  Any expertise you can provide is extremely helpful.

That goes for everybody else too.  Lots of good input courtesy of different backgrounds and levels of experience.  Keep up the good work!

I might have to try out these gloves myself...

How's maneuverability with the lacrosse gloves? I tried some on at sports authority and they were huge!

I've fought in hockey gloves and kote, so I'll venture to answer that.  Yes, they are huge.  And no, I wouldn't want to try fine point control in them.  But for the purposes of most sword fighting, they're actually a lot better than you think.  The padding is on the back of the hand, not the palm, so you don't really lose the feel for the blade.  And when that baton comes swinging in at eighty miles an hour, and some brute brought it in from Hoboken especially for your knuckles, you'll be glad you had the padding on the back of your hand!

The sports authority over here only had one or two types of lacrosse gloves, I went with these because they were the cheapest I had found, at $39 and felt way more
protective than the more expensive options. They also are pretty small compared to most others, and especially hokey gloves. I also tried on plenty of hockey gloves and those impaired my movement far too much. This particular pair of lacrosse gloves though, after playing with them for a few hours, barely restricts any of my mobility.  Maybe this is due to the fact I am a form II/fencing user, but the only direction my hand is even slightly impaired is bending my wrist backwards.

Hard to show in pictures, but I am barely restricted at all. The only downside I'd say to these gloves is the color. Wink
If I can find a way to re-color them or such, it'd be great, but otherwise I'm very happy I found these. I felt so much safer dueling.
