I'd love to change the color of them, but I'm worried about paint melting the foam inside of them. Leather is a great idea though, going to see if my leather worker friend can whip something up.

Lacrosse gloves are a great idea. My friend and I both wore them when we went out dueling last night. They're pretty much a necessity.

Up my way we just spray paint 'em.... couple of coats of black and you are all set.

They give a little less protection then full hockey gloves, but you lose a lot less dexterity.  Plus, they are already black so no spray paint necessary (I did cover up the logos on mine with a black sharpy).

these look pretty nice.  They look a little more capable for allowing spins!?  Part of my dueling is for show, and I like to add some spins during the "interim" for fun/intimidation (side note: I am usually dueling my 5 y/o hahaha.)  But it would be great to have a glove that is protected, as well as functional for both protection as well as spinning.

I have been kicking around an idea for quite some time. . .to sum it up, I would like to fabricate custom gloves using an impression of my hands with a material I am very familiar with called Alginate.  So this is how you do it:  Take an old school coffee can, a cylinder large enough to fit your hold hand/partial wrist into with space on the sides.  After mixing the Alginate impression material, fill up the cylinder with the alginate while minimizing bubbles.  Next, insert your hand (with fingers spread,) into the impression material and let the Alginate set.  This usually takes appx. 2-3 minutes.  Remove your hand from the material and begin the process of pouring a hard gypsum stone into the void left by your hand.  This is not a full procedure, and to shorten this post I will sum up the rest (although if someone were interested I would provide a more detailed plan.)  Once the stone sets (24hrs.,) remove the stone cast and you have your hand in model form.  NOW, you could construct a custom made glove.  I envision using leather, with "pockets" of double layered leather in which thin metal armor is inserted and subsequently "stitched" in. 

What you would have is a custom made glove fit for your own hand with metal armor built inside.  I envision a thin glove, both for protection as well as functionality, for user specific fitting.

That procedure would work fine if your concern were cutting... thin metal shims on the back of your fingers will stop a sharp edge.  But in sabre sparring, the concern is not primarily cutting, but impact.  If you want a metal gauntlet that protects against impact, you need to make each section in basically the shape of an inverted U or a lowercase n, where the finger fits into the space.  The impact is then transmitted around your finger and into the hilt.  It's very fiddly to do, and most armor smiths charge a fair chunk of change for gauntlets like that... I've seen them priced from upwards of U$1k.

Hockey / street hockey / lacrosse gloves are a lot more accessible to the average sabre enthusiast.

That is just a design detail.  You missed the point: by replicating your hand/foot/other, you can make a glove with a perfect fit.

I purposefully don't wear gloves most of the time. The more those knuckle raps hurt, the better I'll be at not getting popped on them, I figure. Since most of my people here in Phoenix are of the same opinion, I've taken great pains to work on my accuracy in blade holder and battery side hits for that wonderful Sun Djem solution where I ring up their hilt but leave them otherwise unharmed.

They are great for spins.   They really feel more like a heavy pair of leather gloves then a normal hockey glove.  Plus, I think they look a lot better.

No pain, no gain I rarely wear gloves as well, but some people I know do. They wear batting gloves or random leather gloves.

I have recently started taking classes in Kali (to improve my saber play).  For that I use hockey gloves, but I've found the wrist restriction to cause some problems for me.  Thanks to this thread, I'll need to take a look at lacrosse gloves and see if those serve me better.

Nice styling, great grip, especially since the ends of your fingers aren't covered, and in black, they don't look too modern / sport-equipment-like (plus the 'armored' spots are actual leather).  Compliments a black hilt or sith robe very well.  Plenty enough padding in the right areas to protect your hands from errant stikes and blows.

LoL all this talk of gloves makes me with my sensei would have made them mandatory in escrima lol damn he was fast months later i still have 2 fingers that are sore lol. Probally light fractures.

Surplus gear from our airsoft loadouts. The carbon fiber knuckle guards are great. Finger shots we are both pretty much used to from back when we used to spar using shinai and bokken (nearly 10 years ago).

Great grip, decent dexterity still. Ordering them from shooter takes about 2-3 weeks depending where you live. A bit longer here in canada because the CSBA is pretty ridiculous.
