So what are everyone’s thoughts on the Skeleton crew series?
5 Episodes in and I find it very enjoyable, probably the 2nd or 3rd best live action Disney production (after Andor / Mandalorian series 1)
While it is very obvious where they have borrowed, almost verbatim, shots, setups, lines and characters from other series and movies it is at least ‘well adapted’, it does well in bringing a renewed sense of wonder of the vastness of the galaxy through the kids eyes (and does a good job of expanding the galaxy a bit), and is genuinely funny (and not in an unintentional way as in the Acolyte etc.). and arguably the younger audiences it is probably more aimed at who have not seen the backlog of 80s/90s films some of us have will find it far fresher.
Are there a lots of overly convenient contrivances – absolutely - but I feel like due to the nature of the story, about kids, in a (very obviously) Goonies like comedy-action adventure it is allowed more leeway in that respect than the ‘adult’ dramas that have come before it, and perhaps more importantly it is entertaining enough in its own way that they are more glossed over, and they don’t break emersion as much, these are kids stumbling their way in a big galaxy trying to get home and maybe the Force is a little more generous to them.
The shorter episode lengths are good in keeping events far more focused and the story really moves, but perhaps need a little longer (not very much though) to develop each of the child characters a bit (though in episode 4 and 5 this seems to be happening a little more but is quite uneven).
Jude law is particularly good and seems to be enjoying himself in this.
It is perhaps a shame that following previously series that range from ‘mixed’ (Acolyte/Obi Wan) to embarrassing (Book of Boba Fett) this might not get the attention it deserves.
It’s no great epic, but I think it knows what it is trying to be as show (noting not everyone will enjoy that type of show), set a small target and is hitting that target very well thus far – something prior series have on reflection done far less well.

Haven't started it yet. I am happy to report that my kid fell HARD for star wars. We have now consumed the 6 movies, half clone wars, obi wan, half of clone wars, mandalorian and half boba fett.

Well now its finished and ***spoilers****
Have to say the best star wars series since Andor, consistently enjoyable, quick pace, did what a good star wars show should in my opinion expanding the galaxy a little and showing interesting little corners of it.
Unlike other series there were no obvious messages being pushed or completely incoherent behaviour by characters, even the bad decisions some made notably Jod toward the end, were consistent with his character, motivations (greed clearly) the frustrations he was feeling (constantly hampered) leading to understandable aggressive outburst here and there but tempered by his pragmatism - that is his behaviour as clearly he main character made sense consistently throughout the show, something other series have failed in.
There were plenty of contrivances, but also some pay-off that made them logical in the story (notably Neels turbo laser at the end, he didn't just find it he had seen it on a similar world), and the show was enjoyable enough to ignore any others.
The child crew still I think didn't get quite as much depth as they might have to each character, but considering the pace of the story that might've been a trade off to avoid it slowing down.
I really hope people give this a go, its a great addition, it's actually fun start to finish, not a series of mediocre moments dotted with moment of bafflement at strange actions and decisions of characters, and interesting concepts not explored. It doesn't do anything extraordinary, but what it does as a young adult coming of age story it does very well.
it would be great to see more of Jod especially, Jude Law really drove this series and could do a lot with that character in a redemption arc or some sort, though I fear many have been put off by the Acolyte.
