Jammo that was a sweet one.

I think we have a distinct group division when it comes to metal among the whole of those that partake of the "whatcha listening to" thread lol.

I do like some faster, harder, and louder metal...but for the most part...I like my metal with lots of clean music and vocals...not so much loosely controlled noise and guttural expression.

But to each his own!

I will close with these

Metallica S&M defines me to a T...this is how I see myself in all ways...cultured, educated, experienced, passionate, wild streak held in check, etc.

I love Metallica beyond S&M but I appreciated them so much more after that album and concert...defining moment in life for me.

I listen to most of the music posted and much of it has aspects I like and can see elements of quality...but as a whole, I am not there anymore...I do not need the music to be overly loud and fast, just because...I was...I had a huge bleached white mohawk and I fought the system...until I ended up being thrown into the military (or jail)...so the screaming and gut wrenching heavy aspects catch me mostly at meh...but I support you guys liking it all Cheesy

Big metal hugs all around!

Well, nah, as a musician I have a very open mind about music and I listen to anything and everything. I just post youtubez for heavier songs because that just happens to be what I'm currently in the mood for. Though that is usually what I listen to anyway....

Also, the "loosely controlled noise" bit is... Never mind, I'm going to be ranting 'till the cows come home, so I'll just point out that it isn't loosely controlled at all, but rather very technical, methodical, and tight. To each their own, and there is nothing wrong with not liking this stuff, but that bit irked me a little  Cheesy

I'm also the quietest guy around and I even find the gutteral vocals and heavy, fast-paced instrumentals to be quite relaxing. And once again I'm a musician, so I'm always listening to the nuances and and appreciating the inner-beauty of the music, so to speak. It's not all about anti-establishment.

Those are just my thoughts. Not trying to convert you or anything, 'cause that would be both stupid and wrong.

I don't really see this as derailing since we're just discussing the music that people are listening to... But just to be safe, I'll shut up and post some songs that truly define me by bands that I love with all my heart *eye twitch*

Funny Smiley...plenty irks me, I didn't say I didn't like it (it being fast, loud, screaming metal)...I do not love it.

Here is the thing...I have played musical instruments...read sheet music...and listened to lots of different kinds of music...I do not think that makes me a musician...but I am an engineer and a scientist...especially when it comes to measurement processes...it is not possible to relax to "gutteral vocals and heavy, fast-paced instrumentals".

Simple science.  The music, volume, tempo, range, frequency, etc. all come to a point of sensory saturation...in this situation that is an overload of input...the opposite of relaxing...it is stimulating.

If you have a limited hearing issue, near deafness, then there is some measure of consideration as the frequency can generate a buzzing that could relax the tissue surrounding scarring...but an ear with normal range of hearing will become hyper sensitive to such stimulation.

Now I am not saying that you can't like a type of music or even a sound, that could be considered noise by others, enough to a point that just hearing it puts you into a state of appreciation...but that is not relaxing.

Relaxing by definition is to be in a state of calm...metal...especially speed/hard/thrash/etc. can be defined with many many words, but calm would not be one of those words.

All good choices, and not because I approve...no...these bands have unique sounds, flavor, and talent...I am curious though...the first three have a certain commonality that the fourth does not at least to my prejudicial ear Smiley

I can see from your earlier posts that the band is a favorite, and I am not cutting them or your liking of them down in any way...no I only mention the songs because this is a common technique used in inspections...it is called "seeding"...hiding in plain sight in a group of near related, something that would by itself be easily noticed.

(updated to my post...I listened to it again...much better the third time lol...maybe there is hope for me lol)

I am sure it is just my ear...I am not getting the RAWR aspect I think.

And that is ok too.

I am here to say that I appreciate anyone's choice of music and that the idea of sharing the same music, this act is one part opening one's self up and one part looking for acceptance...it is brave.

In this sharing, I have been exposed to music that I would not have listened to otherwise...having listened to much music up to this point in life (47yrs), I tend to sway between my favorite genres from time to time...new can be welcome.

I started this thought a while back because I was not getting into the recent trend being posted...in fact I had been skipping over the last handful of thread pages because the screaming and guttural growling was wearing me down...irking me to a high degree.

In some examples there were clean and beautiful musicality with the instruments, maybe even a great singer...then screaming and heart attack faces...making it hard to appreciate the goodness surrounding the ugly.

A paradox to be sure.

So be irked; in our passions we find reasons to love and hate...in sharing the passions and that which drives us, we grow.

Cheesy

Quite the contrary. Than again I've been listening to the more extreme styles of metal since middle school, so for me it's probably just easier. Also, taking my troubled past into consideration, I find the anger and the spiritual strength gained from metal did calm me down quite a lot, and yes, even managed to relax me. Even to this day it still does, despite not having quite as many chips on my shoulders. Maybe I'm just desensitized. Either way, the kind of metal I post isn't nearly as extreme as the kind ThreadJack posted earlier. Not even I care too much for that band, however I do respect the musicians that make up the band. Talking about the Cannibal Corpse song, by the way.

Also,

mu·si·cian  (my-zshn)
noun.
One who composes, conducts, or performs music, especially instrumental.

Having performed in an orchestra, I do consider myself a musician, but don't take that as narcissism. I'm very humble. Just stating why I used the word. Though I suppose that word does carry an air of narcissism with it, doesn't it? Hm. Maybe I should use that word less.

All good choices, and not because I approve...no...these bands have unique sounds, flavor, and talent...I am curious though...the first three have a certain commonality that the fourth does not at least to my prejudicial ear Smiley

That is why I put it as the fourth, so as not to disrupt the flow. I simply just thought to post songs that describe me very well.

In some examples there were clean and beautiful musicality with the instruments, maybe even a great singer...then screaming and heart attack faces...making it hard to appreciate the goodness surrounding the ugly.

A paradox to be sure.

Cheesy

We are all entitled to our opinions. Music, as cliche as this may be, is the universal language, and some of just have trouble understanding certain parts of it. That's fine.

I was simply irked by that one sentence. To say I wasn't irked would be a lie. I'm not a Saint after all.

And I do agree with that last sentence.

Good choices. I've always been a big fan of Powerman 5000 and Korn.  Cheesy

This song holds a message I try to live by every day. Just thought I'd help show how screaming can be tastefully applied... Plus two of the musicians in the band are huge favorites of mine, so maybe I'm just biased. Either way, the lyrics are the main draw.

A couple well placed rawrs can be effective...that song was pretty good...the worst of it for me...being distracted by their skinny jeans...yes yes I know...missing the point...watch the video for content and listen to the song for intent...but skinny jeans on guys...whew...the fists come up ready to put the beat down on some hippies lol...

Don't know why exactly...but skinny jeans on guys just makes me...want to fight...I mean seriously...makes me mad for some reason.

So a thought for anyone out there...if we ever get to dueling with sabers...don't wear your skinny jeans...Tongue

Actually listening to podcasts at the moment.

1. Getting caught up on Kevin Smith's "Fatman on Batman" (weekly homage to his hero, with interesting guests)
2. Getting caught up on Mission Log, the intent of which is to go through each, and every episode of Star Trek (starting from the beginning, eventually all the way through the movies), with analysis, conjecture, observations, and anecdotal/trivia information.
3. AnandTech's M4 Feed - Happenings in the world of, and in-depth/thorough exploration of all things, tech.

Perhaps some Buckcherry in between, when music is what I crave.
