This is the biggest question to date for me as a lightsaber user.

How do I know what style I'm using?

I know I prefer something like Soresu as my base form since I'm defensive by nature and I do notice that I try to tire out the person before making an attack. Most dont want to duel me because of this stance.

Also, pulling off this isn't hard when you don't have to fight someone who moves at the speed of light. Tongue

Let me give you the greatest piece of advice on the subject: Don't sweat it.

The Forms aren't real and everything we do and say here is speculative to the last dot. So if you're not sure where you are, don't worry if you don't know. That being said, you mentioned being Soresu based, and by your example, you sound it. So there ya go Cheesy

Don't forget that to be a really useful sparring partner you have to give a little offense every once in a while... otherwise people never learn how to block. It's no fun when there's no exchange of offense, well it is for the person who is conserving all their energy anyways lol!

I too am guilty of this, if you have a good defense it's easy to just let your opponent tire themselves. Training is give and take you gotta give a little every now and then. lol

That being said Soresu sounds like a good base for you. Really though just read through the forms, and pick the one you like the best... or post a freeform video and ask for pointers or advice...

Lol what everyone else said. Most of the time we all have a mixture of Forms...but either way you go, have fun and practice whatever is comfortable. Now take me for example.. I automatically assumed since I was a taller, stronger guy that Djem So was the right way to go. And it was pretty comfortable to practice moves or applications regarding Form V. I went through a ton of trials and errors and eventually discovered that Form II, Makashi was the most suited for me. Everything about it is just easier for me and I think that is important!

Makashi is a pretty good pick for tall guys, since you can use your distance to your advantage.  Of course, as you said, it's whatever you're comfortable with.  (btw I just noticed the Grandma's Boy quote in your sig - nice!)

From what you said Soresu sounds accurate.

One thing my sparring partner and I hit on, is when we are flow dueling, changing up offense and defense.

For example, I go first, im offense, i get 10 strikes, and we count them out, once all 10 are done we stop for 5 seconds as a definate break, then he goes offensive for 10 stirkes.

Keeps it balanced so both get a chance to attack and defend, and by doing the short sets you can keep a flow duel going even longer than normal.

This should help you work on your offense, even if you are more defensively minded as well.


My style is definately soresu primarily, but i put a lot of elements of shi cho and djem so into it as well.

It just takes time, and some work to figure out where you fit comfortably.
