Hey guys here's a rough video of me talking about how to post videos with respect to lightsaber combat. This is followed up by some free form, followed by me nearly putting a hole in the ceiling! lol After talking about knowing your distance and such lol.

It's a really raw video from my webcam, but I think it gives some good pointers on how to post videos that will get accurate feedback. Enjoy!

Questions, comments, concerns, or complaints are always welcome!!!

Who is this person posting from Lucien's account?  Tongue

That being said, the hour that I tend to get out to the park are more a function of my shift and current residence than anything.  It's a pretty miserable place to film, but anywhere else is pretty much off limits.  I'd kill for some level ground.  The place I'm moving to in the states, thankfully, has a much wider, sheltered back yard and I might finally start sleeping sensible hours by then.  Hopefully I'll be able to post some clearer videos in the coming months.

Nice moves by the way.

Availability of lighting and terrain are definitely a factor! I totally understand. Also when you're allowed or comfortable to use your chosen dueling haunt lol! I like to film at dusk, or in a heavily shaded area if I'm filming during the day. Really these blades are visible in pretty much anything less than direct sunlight. Which is just impressive really!

That being said, difficult terrain can make you a better swordsman. You have to learn better footwork, that being said again be careful... it's very easy to break an ankle if you twist things the wrong way!

I realize I say "that being said"... A LOT... that being said I feel it helps me convey points better. lol

and I have no idea, some handsome devil jacked my account. What are you gonna do? lol  Grin

Did I mention handsome? LOL

Humility seriously needs to find it's way back into my vocabulary SOON.

Thanks for the compliments, for being in an enclosed area they aren't too bad... I can do far better when I have some open skies to deal with.

re: videos in the dark

Thank you! Totally needs to be said.

One comment on the video to add to the conversation. At times the music competes with your voice. I would suggest pushing the vocals up a bit and fade the music more into the background.

I enjoy your grip switch techniques. Your toss is also very nice. To often folks treat the saber as a light up baton. Kudos.

watch the video closely when he is is spinning, his arms are actually decently defined so you can see all the crazy contortions our arm muscles do when spinning a saber lol

its kinda neat because its not normally something you think about, but when you look at what the muscles are actually doing, makes you realise you really need to stretch before longer saber sessions, or anytime you are doing something more taxing than normal with a lightsaber. A lot of the forms we emulate, make you move in ways in modern society we dont tend to on a normal basis.

Sorry for the sidetracking, the video itself was great, and a good intro for people. But because you are just wearing that type of shirt it let me notice something that as i said we dont really think about. The rest of us usually are wearing jackets or hoodies....or in my sparring partners case a winnipeg jets hockey jersey, anytime we do something with sabers.

Theoretically with most of us being adults we should know to do this....but really how many of us actually do.

So normally it would be overlooked. Its something none of us should take for granted, we should all be stretching

It totally did didn't it? I tried to make sure that didn't happen, I had the music on it's lowest volume possible. It was a 9 minute video so I wanted a little music so things weren't just stale, but yeah competing with music for vocals isn't smart... Thanks for bringing that to my attention!

I had to shave the beard a while ago for my stage makeup class... Right? Really manly class.

Also thank you! I was going for Ataru, and had a lot of fun doing the spins... right up until the point I waylaid the ceiling! Talk about taking your own advice right?

Lucien, once again you've dazzled us with your skills and knowledge. *thumbs up*

Now a few observations/suggestions.

With the new hair do, grow back your Obi-Wan beard to give you that air of distinguished authority.

In another thread (about winning the lotto I think) you mentioned how you'd open up a Jedi temple. How about you try to do just that virtually with a line of instructional youtube videos, much like what you've done but with a bit of green-screen and low budget effects creating your virtual temple. Perhaps your own website for the temple as well. Just a thought.

For lighting, I've been thinking of those rope-lights strung in the corners/edges of the practice area, be it a room or outside. I think they'd make a fairly diffuse glow allowing for both the brilliance of a saber and being able to see its wielder.

lol thanks! I will totally grow the beard out if I don't get a job here pretty soon, which is kind of the reason I cut my hair in the first place, but I agree a beard would go well. Not to mention it hides my face pretty well... Which means I won't have to smile in pictures (I hate my smile)

That is an interesting suggestion, I think if I do get this job, I am going to be getting a house, and My plans are to turn the garage into a Star Wars workshop where I can build my armor, mod up some sabers and such of that nature, but it will look totally in universe. If so my idea is to have a high ceiling in the garage, and to do my free form videos in there.

The lighting idea is an interesting one, and one that just gave me a few ideas about night time training, and having designated dueling areas.

Yea, you're beard rocked pretty hard man, but I understand getting a job...not so much the beard since I'm like impervious to grow one.... Sad, hopefully one day lol

Back to the Jedi Temple.. I would most definitely join!
