We're all just dreams in the end...

« Reply #870 on: March 15, 2014, 03:39:03 AM »

Planet Comicon is going on in downtown Kansas City this weekend, it started today... I've been looking forward to it all year (even before guests were announced) but for some reason, this week rolled around and I just don't want to go...

My wife and I just feel like we've been running ourselves ragged doing things for the last several months on the weekends (and we have,)  our middle daughter got married in January and is finally moving in with her husband (he's in the Army, trying to find housing took a little time) this weekend, so we've got that happening.  There's the big 12 Basketball Tournament going on like 5 blocks from Comicon, so I hear parking is high priced and hard to find downtown and I really really just want to hang out at home and not do anything if I can help it.

Is that a bad thing?

Nothing wrong with that at all.  Sometimes you need a quiet weekend at home to just recharge the batteries.  Everyone needs a quiet weekend sometimes.

well, me and my ankle. Again.

This time, things are getting a big more tense at work coz of it. Coz its a long term injury and its not getting better- in fact all this year its been going downhill- and its impacting what I can physically do at work, head office have had to become involved. and they have to assess whether my ankle injury can be "accommodated by the business long-term." In other words, there's a very real possibility that if I can no longer keep up, I might be politely told to find another job.  Cry atm I get to get a detailed assessment by my doctors and the company as to what duties I can and cannot complete.

I don't know what to do anymore. finding a job I trained for isn't easy- harder when I cant do field work. I've avoided just going hunting for another retail job that allows me to sit coz I didn't wanna just get into another retail job- I didn't do 4.5 years full time equiv uni to work in retail. looks like I may not have much choice in the matter, least not in the short term  Sad

oh, and still waiting for the damn specialists to make an appointment for me. And I've been given the run around trying to get it pushed through as more urgent. in a few days itll be 10 months  Angry

How things operate in Oz is surely different than here but some of the following may help in some manner.

Is there an office for disabled application?  Even temporary until your injury is repaired?  This would grant parking privileges, getting you closer to work and stores so you don't have as far to walk.

Perhaps even granting you special training and placement?

In addition, work places often receive governmental compensation for hiring or having on staff someone with disads, thus giving them reason to provide opportunity for you to work, even with restrictions.

I would seek legal representation, some pro bono consideration to pursue your potential claim of support.

Here I know exactly where to go and who to see, there, not so much  Sad

sadly, I'm guessing I'll run into the same issues as I have so far- what, you aren't disabled, look you can still walk and work, what's your problem. Who cares if you are in chronic pain and take painkillers all the time. It's all in your head, there's nothing wrong with you.... even though my very old scans support that my ankle has terrible stability, and I continue to keep rolling it easily. I remember the issues Dad had trying to claim any kind of disability assistance, and he was a tonne worse off than me- he ended up losing his business coz he was physically unable to keep working and it took years of fighting for it to get on a disability pension. that and my job description (which work have *kindly* provided for me, its 6 pages long) is all about physical work, lifting, blah blah blah. sigh, I'll be best off seeing where it all leads first Sad as it is I want out of there, just this isn't how I imagined leaving.

and I found my original referral, yep it says "priority 2- within 90 days". I'm still trying to figure out how that equates to "low priority, if you are really really lucky we will see you within 12 months of the referral though in reality it'll be longer and there's nothing you can do to rush it along"- which is what I was told the other day. now I have to chase up my doctor and make sure he resent a more urgent referral through

Your chasing after the doctor with one bum leg is a rather comical and tragic image   Undecided

Perhaps start here and see what advice they have to offer?

http://www.crsaustralia.gov.au/

Reason I note this site, it says what I said.  If the current employer changes the status of your employment then you get better conditions allowing for potential of time and healing, they get compensation.

National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is the direction to start one would think?

What was your scholastic direction if one may pry thus?

PS
Is buggalugs an appropriate term of casual endearment towards a female type person in Oz?  For that matter is Sheila or chickie babe acceptable?  Or are all these a bit "hey baby baby" wink wink nod nod?

The Mad Professor

« Reply #875 on: March 18, 2014, 04:53:44 PM »

Okay, so I'm trying... I'm REALLY trying not to go bonkers here.

I don't think I've come across a more computer-unsavvy person ever in my life...

Some highlights of the current conversation:

Quote
Him: So I have another question. Yeah, I know I have a crappy computer. So if I was to get a new one, how would I transfer all this bought and downloaded software? I know I had to call my anti virus people last time I got a new computer in order for them to transfer that. I have this Nero stuff now and also Prism file converter which I use a bit.

How do you move that stuff to another computer? I don't want to have to buy it again if I get a new computer. Please remember you are talking to someone who knows less about computers than your average six year old. Telling me 'what' to do doesn't really help me. I need to know 'how'..
********************************************

Me: First of all, don't panic. You already bought the software, which means you own a copy. They cannot make you pay for it again if you paid for it once.

There are a few methods to accomplish what you want:

1) Use a drive cloning kit: Amazon.com: drive cloning kit: Electronics

2) Create a system image: Back up your programs, system settings, and files - Microsoft Windows Help

3) Copy all your working files (your saved files and everything) on an external drive, install the software on the new computer (you bought it, you should be able to reinstall it with no problem), and put the working files on the new machine.

Of the three, I recommend the third most, especially since you are coming off a pre-built machine and possibly going to another pre-built machine. The reason why is because you will be going from one installation of Windows to another, so you want the transfer to be as clean as possible to keep from borking the system.
******************************************

Him: I do use an external drive. I learned the hard way not to keep my stuff actually in my computer--lost everything last time. So you are saying I can just go to the same site I bought it from and click "download" again and I won't have to pay for it? When I first bought it and downloaded it and clicked the download button it just--did it. It didn't really ask me where to download it to, at least not that I remember.

How exactly would I get it to go to the external drive?
******************************************

Me: No, you copy the working files (the files you created by using the program, such as .doc, .xls, etc) to the external drive.

When you downloaded the programs, it downloaded a .exe file, correct?
******************************************

Him: I can only assume it did.. I have no idea what that is.
******************************************

Me: What programs are you referring to?
******************************************

Him: The only thing I need to get backed up on my external drive is my Nero Video and my Prism file converter. I paid for both of those and if my old computer was to crash or if I get a new one I would like to have those either backed up on my external drive or on a disc so I could redownload them onto my new computer.
******************************************

Me: When you paid for the programs and downloaded them, you MUST have saved the exe files to your computer.

Open up Windows Explorer (making sure you are in the Computer) and go to the top right corner. You should see a search field there.

Type in "prism*.exe" (without the quotes) and press Enter.

This will search your computer for any executable file with the word prism in it. When it finishes searching, copy the correct file to your external drive.

Repeat the process with "nero*.exe" (again, no quotes)

<screenshot of a standard Windows Explorer window with the search field and Computer indicated in bold red>
******************************************

Him: Oh, okay, I will try that when I get home. Thank you.

Here's another dumb question, after I get this copied to my external drive, suppose I get another computer, will this just work from my external drive or will I have to install it into the new computer? And if so, how?
******************************************

Me: What you would be doing is saving the installation file to the external drive. You won't be able to run the program from the external drive.

The reason why is because for a program like that to run, it HAS to use an operating system. Your external drive does not have an OS installed, nor can it, as it is not a self contained computer. It's simply a storage device... an oversized flash drive, so to speak.

When you get your new computer, just move the installation file to the new computer and double-click it to install the program on the new computer.

HOW CAN HE NOT KNOW SIMPLE THINGS???

I want to tell him he's too stupid to own a computer... but I just can't...

thanks. When my head is in a bit better spot (and not numb from exhaustion) ill check it out.

buggalugs ain't used much, least not where i live/ work. Sheila is actually more stereotypical slang and in regular city goers talk, isn't used that much. though just today i was described as "an ocker sheila" which gave me a chuckle. Babe, chick, hun, sweetheart, darling and versions of these i get called those regularly at work and it doesn't offend me. Personally, honestly, most nicknames/ endearments don't bother me, even if they are a bit wink wink nod nod rofl! The people i talk to on facebook from here know im pretty easy going with such things Tongue

oh, and i did environmental science with environmental restoration. Junior work is often a lot of running around/ field based from the job descriptions I've found so far (when there are actually jobs advertised). I wanna go into community education which is my passion and allows for more office based, lining up a dip ed but i was planning to get myself into a job first and then do it part time external- and even if i change my plans and just do it now, im a bit late for this semester and with my wedding next semester i didn't really wanna start it then. I do also have an interest in policy and GIS, but once again, junior positions hard to find. Gonna have to just drop my resume around methinks and hope I get a bite, even for volunteer work putting data into a computer or something. And if volunteer work is all i can find, well, guess ill go job hunting for a mundane office job that i can actually do in the meantime Sad

Eleven hours of sleep total this week. That's roughly 2-3 hours a night.
Probably will pull an all-nighter to get more work done.

My mind hurts...  Cry
But I can still type really well.

I'm really behind on my lesson planning.  I'm doing student-teaching right now and finishing up my career, which includes a 5:00 am wake up followed by teaching until around 4:00 pm or so.  It's nothing to brag about or to take pity on.  I knew what I was getting myself in to.  What I did not know was how much sleep I would lose and how important time management is.
I just finished up TPA 3 [Teacher Performance Assessment], which is basically a 40-50 page paper on teaching strategies and adaptations.  That was due this last Monday and it totally screwed up my sleep schedule and put me behind in my work.  I am now playing "catch up" on all of my planning and whatnot but I have to submit my lesson plans for next week to my master-teacher tomorrow afternoon to tell him what I'm going to be covering.  I still have 4 lessons to write up.

The worst part?  TPA 4, another 40-50 page paper is due April 18 at 11:59 pm, and I haven't even started.

What is my life?  Undecided Cry

I wish you luck waxman. Time management is hugely important, and i happen to be rather terrible at it.

make sure you get some sleep though. A good nights sleep this weekend will let you do your teaching planning and assessment more effectively

It's 3:47 AM, and I'm still up. That's the way it's been every night. Sometimes I manage to crank out maybe an hour or two more before I finally turn off the light and go to sleep.

Then I wake up the next morning feeling like a zombie and remembering what I swore to do every day before that, which is to look for work. But I never do.

This is neglect as self-harm.

And this is bullcrap.

Motivation can be really hard to find sometimes, but I find that once you put forth the effort-especially for a job- the rewards are worth it.

^ I have no desire to put forth the effort into anything. I even chose not to go watch The Lego Movie or Captain America: TWS because I felt like I didn't deserve the happiness that would come with each.

Instead I sit here, in an endless loop of procrastination, waiting...

Just waiting.

And I have a feeling that I'm going to be waiting for a very long time.

My sleep schedule has been really messed up lately. I can't get to sleep before 4am, and usually wind up sleeping until around noon. I don't know why, it just kinda happened. It annoys me a little, but it hasn't really started affecting my life, thankfully. I think it's just that I don't expend a lot of energy during the day, so I'm not tired at night, due to to still having energy built up.

I'm gonna be starting a new workout tomorrow, hoping that will help tire me out enough to get to bed earlier.

Its funny... I've never had an issue with going to sleep. I just lie in bed for like thirty minutes and then I'm out. I guess I'm just one of the lucky ones. I have to personally screw myself over to make it not work. lol.

But I guess I'll try again tonight. I'll force myself to turn off the computer and get my sorry butt into that cozy warm bed.

But if I'm still awake, and if any of you happen to see me post, feel free to publicly call me out in whichever thread I posted in.
