The debut trailer for Iron Man 3 is officially here, highlighting the coming sequel's conflict between Robert Downey Jr.'s titular superhero and Mandarin, brought to life by none other than Sir Ben Kingsley. You also get a few peeks at Downey Jr.'s Tony Stark struggling with his post-Avengers New York City catastrophe demons (in a bottle, perhaps?).

There are a few specific things you should be watching for. A quick shot of Mandarin's ten ring-bearing fingers, the Ten Rings of Power that the super-villain found in a starship (in the comics). You'll also get a peek at the Iron Patriot (US flag-themed armor), worn in the comics by the villainous Norman Osborn during the Marvel Universe's catastrophic Civil War. Osborn won't be a player in Iron Man 3, so I'm guessing the Iron Patriot duties will fall to Aldrich Killian (Guy Pearce, also seen in the trailer), in a nod to the comics' Extremis arc.

I saw that last night.  Looks dark.  For a minute there I thought that it was the Sentient Iron Man suit vs. Tony Stark part of the comics, but then I saw the patriotic themed suit.

Kham is the bearer of good news these days, isn't he? I can't wait for this to come out, it looks a lot darker than the previous Iron Man movies have been.

Wait just a second. I could be wrong, but I think I see Rhodes written on the Iron Patriot armor, so maybe it's an Iron Patriot themed War Machine we are seeing.

Also, note the tattered pants and bare foot at about 50 seconds in. I know they've claimed that there will be no Hulk in this one, but that looks like a reference at least.

It is. My guess is that Rhodey has become a modern day Captain America, serving as a symbol of American Awesomeness.

As it says above Iron Patriot was originally Norman Osborn but they can't use that character since Sony own Spider-Man.

Now that the government has the Armor, they gave it a new paint scheme and I'm pretty sure Rhodey will pilot it.

Basically as you saw, they are really going to be stripping Stark of everything, beyond how low he fell at the beginning of the first film.

There is a good chance that the Iron Patriot Armor will be taken from Rhodey and worn by a villan.

Ben Kingsley IS playing The Mandarin. However, Kingsley’s Mandarin is a background mastermind, while Guy Pearce’s scientist character, Aldrich Killian, is the more direct threat.

Pearce’s character will invent the Extremis nanotechnology, and use it to transform multiple people into (literal) killing machines. (Extremis is the tech used by Tony to call the suit to him in pieces from anywhere.)

Minor villains Firepower (played by Ashley Hamilton) and Coldblood-7 (played by James Badge Dale) will not be the same as their obscure comic book counterparts, but will rather be generic cyborg types created by Killian’s Extremis technology.

Actor William Sadler (Die Hard 2) is in the cast of Iron Man 3 for some yet-to-be-revealed role.
