Title: Favourite Doctors, TARDIS, companions, and arcs. Post by: BenPass on July 25, 2013, 03:22:15 PM Like the title says, this is the place for us to discuss all things Who. I am sure that there are many different ideas on series, stories, and of course the Doctor himself. That said I thought that there were enough of us out there to warrant a topic dedicated to Dr. Who.
For me, I started watching Who only this last year. I started with 9, 10, and 11, and have recently started watching the original Doctors. I've seen 1, 2, and 3 so far. Maybe it is merely because they were he Doctor and companion that I started with, but I loved Nine and Rose. I loved Ten just as well as Nine, but did not overly like Eleven. He just didn't strike the right chord with me, though I am particularly fond of Amy ;) For the originals, I really enjoyed One, and even Two. I'm not a fan of Three though. Again, he just doesn't strike that chord, that mysterious thing in my mind that accepts him as the Doctor. For creatures, I love the Daleks, the Ood, the Weeping Angels, and the Nestene. Honourable mention to the Silence for being just plain interesting. I don't necessarily have a favourite story arc, though watching Nine's season (series) always gets me. Seriously, I love the whole Bad Wolf revelation. Anyway, that's my blurb for now. I hope there are others interested in discussing Who. Title: Re: Favourite Doctors, TARDIS, companions, and arcs. Post by: kewlkev360 on July 25, 2013, 03:51:28 PM I like 11 the best and have a mad crush on Amy Pond. I haven't seen all the seasons, only catching episodes here and there on Netflix and this last season on BBC. I particularly like the episode on the Cold-War era Soviet Submarine. (I like the actor who played the captain, who is also from the Game of Thrones series)
My favorite alien character is Strax and the Daleks are my favorite villains. Title: Re: Favourite Doctors, TARDIS, companions, and arcs. Post by: Prowl 1701 on July 25, 2013, 05:16:05 PM Oh Ben, you are about to meet the Fourth Doctor soon then, he is amazing, his name is Tom Baker and he is the legendary Doctor that wore the scarf! I love most of the Doctors, the only ones I'm not fond of are the First and Sixth, the others are all really good. The Dalaks are my favorite villain and a few favorite episodes are "Genesis of the Dalaks", "Day of the Dalaks (Special Edition)", "Blink", "The End of Time (parts 1 and 2)", "The Ark in Space", "The War Games", "Inferno", and "The Eleventh Hour".
Title: Re: Favourite Doctors, TARDIS, companions, and arcs. Post by: BenPass on July 25, 2013, 05:29:05 PM Very cool to read guys. Yes, I'm nearly to Baker. I'm interested to see what I think of him.
On another note, I just saw the test script for the 12th Doctor's audition. (http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/07/26/asugu4a6.jpg) Seems to me that the new Doctor could either be considerably taller, or shorter. I saw make him taller and make him me! I think a 6'6 Doctor would be interesting ;) Title: Re: Favourite Doctors, TARDIS, companions, and arcs. Post by: BenPass on July 26, 2013, 06:23:17 PM Well, I've made it to Four, and he reminds me a lot of Nine, which is a very good thing! You're right, I like Four!

You're right, I like Four! Yes, Four is a legend. He played the Doctor for a record setting SEVEN seasons! Nine and Four also have the same BIG smile :P Title: Re: Favourite Doctors, TARDIS, companions, and arcs. Post by: BenPass on July 26, 2013, 09:12:20 PM That IS impressive! Their noses are similar also, as are some of their mannerisms.
Title: Re: Favourite Doctors, TARDIS, companions, and arcs. Post by: JEStucker on August 03, 2013, 02:39:54 AM I found my love through PBS and watching #4... Tom Baker just set the standard for me and I agree, I saw a lot of Baker in Christopher Eccleston's portrayal as #9. He just had that proper on the edge of insane quality.
#5 was always just fun to watch, he was quite amusing and over the top, especially loved the celery as a boutonniere in his jacket. #6, #7 sort of run together for me and without seeing pictures of them I forget the order of which one is which, but it was British TV in the 80's so they all sorta feel the same. #8 was a 1996 made for TV movie and I loved it, honestly it was new Doctor Who and I was 21 and finally really started to understand the show. Then we hit the current series starting with #9... what is there to be said, it's fun, it's funny, it's smart, it's snappy and it's still everything it was from the beginning. I really wish Eccleston had done more than a single season, but that was actually his contract from the beginning and he did get a whole new generation loving the series. #10, David Tennant, I do admit, this is my man crush (it used to be Sean Connery, but damn he got OLD.) The only issue I end up having with #10's run is Martha Jones, was never a big fan of hers, she just felt too know it all as a companion. I adored Donna Noble. #11, Matt Smith, my daughter loves him and has a crush on him, he definitely took some getting used to as the doctor (about 2-3 episodes for me.) I couldn't nail down a specific story arc, any of the ones with John Simms as the Master, especially the final ones leading to Tennant's death... and the War of the Medusa Cascade arc, with all the companions coming together to stop the rise of the Dalek Crucible. I could keep going, but I think I've fanboy'd enough Title: Re: Favourite Doctors, TARDIS, companions, and arcs. Post by: Master Rel on August 03, 2013, 03:34:45 AM "Human Nature"...David Tennant (Tenth Doctor)...Freema Agyeman (Martha Jones)...I will not give any of it away, it is a good one.
"City of Death"...Tom Baker (Fourth Doctor)...Lalla Ward (Romana)...one of the best 4th Dr episodes. "The Eleventh Hour"...Matt Smith (Eleventh Doctor)...Karen Gillan (Amy Pond)...an alien prisoner hunt, good times. "The Seeds Of Doom"...Tom Baker (Fourth Doctor)...Elisabeth Sladen (Sarah Jane Smith)...tons of action and science horror! "The Girl in the Fireplace"...David Tennant (Tenth Doctor)...award winning, great story. "The Talons of Weng-Chiang"...Tom Baker (Fourth Doctor)...Louise Jameson (Leela)....an interesting blend of genres. "The Empty Child"...Christopher Eccleston (Ninth Doctor)...Billie Piper (Rose Tyler) & John Barrowman (Jack Harkness)...really creepy episode. "Genesis of the Daleks"...Tom Baker (Fourth Doctor)...Elisabeth Sladen (Sarah Jane Smith) & Ian Marter (Harry Sullivan)...the alpha and omega of entry into the Daleks. But to be honest...I could recommend most of the episodes...the newer ones more so because of the production values. Title: Re: Favourite Doctors, TARDIS, companions, and arcs. One of my few Dr Who peeves...Donna Noble. Whew...I never warmed up to the attitude, mannish looks, and the aggression...but she was in several good episodes, David Tennant is one of my favorite Dr's of all of them so it makes it hard because I disliked her so much...it kept me at odds. I appreciated her more at the end I guess, she had moments. It is almost like she belonged in another time, which is ironic...she was and is just not my cuppa. :( But the good news is that there are lots of options! It is curious how much we can like the same things but not all the same things. :D Title: Re: Favourite Doctors, TARDIS, companions, and arcs. I'm looking forward to seeing him in the role. Seconded, though my wife thinks, with the amount of young viewers Tennant and Smith added, that going older may be a mistake. Time will tell, and look forward to it no matter what. Title: Re: Favourite Doctors, TARDIS, companions, and arcs. Post by: JEStucker on August 04, 2013, 11:58:57 PM Neat thing, he's already been in Torchwood and Doctor Who... as Caecilius in "Fires of Pompeii" and John Frobisher in "Children of the Earth: 1-5"
Though IMDB currently lists him as playing Cardinal Richelieu in a TV series called "The Musketeers" for 2014 that's in Pre-Production... not sure whats going to happen to that project. I do love the fact he's another Scot as well, maybe instead of putting on the England accent he can stick with the natural Scottish baroque? Title: Re: Favourite Doctors, TARDIS, companions, and arcs. Post by: Aerthias Kodoun on August 05, 2013, 02:11:21 AM Yes! Other Whovians!!!
Well, my all time FAVORITE episode (well, two parter) is Human Nature/The Family of Blood. They. Were. Incredible. And heartbreaking... EXTREMELY well written... So sad... :'( absolutely LOVED that they had Joan Redferns great-granddaughter in The End of Time (Part II) When Tennant was saying his goodbyes... Unfortunately, I haven't seem much from '63-'87. Or the '96 Movie, but my favorite Classic series episode is The Caves of Androzani. Title: Re: Favourite Doctors, TARDIS, companions, and arcs. I liked that one as well, have it on DVD! Like the way they did the regeneration sequence in it. Title: Re: Favourite Doctors, TARDIS, companions, and arcs. Title: Re: Favourite Doctors, TARDIS, companions, and arcs. Post by: Prowl 1701 on August 05, 2013, 05:12:54 AM I make it a habit to get a Doctor's first and last episodes. I have all of the new series except for the second half of series 7. I have every regeneration episode except for the Tenth Planet (First Doctor/Second Doctor) it's suppose to come out soon if it hasn't already. It was missing the final episode (part 4) but it has been animated with the original TV soundtrack played over it. I have "The War Games"/"Spearhead From Space" (Second/Third), "Planet of the Spiders" (Third/Fourth), "Logopolis" (Fourth/Fifth), "The Caves of Androzani" (Fifth/Sixth), "Time and the Rani" (Sixth/Seventh), and the TV Movie (Seventh/Eighth).

A lot of folks bash Nine, but I say he had his own flavor which was unique and wonderful in its own right. He had the misfortune to cover the very first season of a newly restarted show, which is gonna have its bumps and learning experiences along the way. The writing is much better into Ten, and Tennant's performance is... in his own words, BRILLIANT! I've only seen two episodes with Matt Smith, and I loved them both but I'm waiting to see more to make a judgment call. One of my favorite episodes (maybe my absolute favorite so far) is Blink. Terrifying, clever, and a fresh change of pace with how little the Doctor actually appears. It brings the show back to the everyman, and introduces an epic new enemy - the Weeping Angels! I can't wait to see what else Moffet has up his sleeve... Title: Re: Favourite Doctors, TARDIS, companions, and arcs. Matt Smith has some great episodes you can look forward to (including more Weeping Angels!) Bink was a great episode and Moffet also wrote the episodes in the big library that introduced River Song! I love Who, old Who and new Who! Title: Re: Favourite Doctors, TARDIS, companions, and arcs. Post by: BenPass on September 13, 2013, 04:18:56 PM Christopher Eccleston was great as the 9th doctor IMO. Noticeable in Matt's Doctor. Don't you remember when he regenerates the Doctor has a nearly complete personality overhaul? Title: Re: Favourite Doctors, TARDIS, companions, and arcs. Post by: BenPass on September 13, 2013, 04:34:50 PM Oh yes, I do remember that. I'm just not taken with 11. He just doesn't strike me as...right. He seems very unlike the Doctor a lot of the time.
I see past companions and acquaintances recognize the Doctor because he's always somewhat similar and familiar.... I can't picture that happening too well with 11 because he is SO drastically different. Like I said, I still enjoy some of his episodes, but I'll be glad when he's gone and we can get back to "real Doctor". He reminds me so much of Colin Baker, and I couldn't stand Baker either. Title: Re: Favourite Doctors, TARDIS, companions, and arcs. Post by: Prowl 1701 on September 16, 2013, 06:41:43 PM UGH, I hated Collin Baker, his doctor was so damn arrogant, and that outfit of his was god awful. I like Matt though, I feel he combines the "old man" in the "kid's" body really well. Plus he's so...elastic :P. I didn't like William Hartnell either, i found him boring.

It's been announced that 9 missing episodes of Doctor Who have been discovered. All the episodes are from the Second Doctor’s era and come from two stories – The Enemy of the World and The Web of Fear. The Enemy of the World first aired on BBC One in December, 1967. Episodes 1, 2, 4, 5 and 6 had been missing from the BBC archives but have now been found which means that a complete version of this classic six-parter now exists. Episodes 2 – 6 of The Web of Fear were feared lost forever but now episodes 2, 4, 5, and 6 have been recovered. This means that now, aside from episode 3, this adventure also exists in its entirety. Both stories star Patrick Troughton as the Doctor plus Frazer Hines as Jamie and Deborah Watling as Victoria. The Web of Fear introduces the much-loved character Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart (later known as the Brigadier) whilst The Enemy of the World is unique insofar as Patrick Troughton also stars as the story’s main villain – the evil Salamander. Many old school fans know there are many episodes missing from the BBC archive of the First and Second Doctor era. Getting a whooping nine episodes recovered is a large boon for us Who fans, especially considering Enemy of the World is now complete and Web of Fear is only missing one episode. I'm not gonna lie, I cried like a newborn for the next four hours, matts farewell was done very we'll... :'( He was my Doctor, the first episode I ever saw wasThe Doctor, the Widow, and the Wardrobe I will miss him very much... :'( On the other hand, no season 8 until NEXT FALL >:( Title: Re: Favourite Doctors, TARDIS, companions, and arcs. Post by: Brian64 on December 26, 2013, 07:56:09 PM Did anyone pick up that the Doctor was on Trenzalore before he was told the name of the planet? And I don't mean because we knew going into the ep that Matt was bowing out (hence Trenzalore), but because of the truth field and Dorium's quote at the end of the Wedding of River Song which included; 'On the fields of Trenzalore, at the fall of the Eleventh, when no living creature may speak falsely or fail to give answer, a question will be asked...'

His farewell speech was heartbreaking, and I thought it was much better then David's "I don't wanna go!" Title: Re: Favourite Doctors, TARDIS, companions, and arcs. I still prefer David's ending better, I liked the "I don't want to go line", it summed up just how much he loved being the Tenth Doctor. I didn't want him to go either. Post by: Darth Raymonus on December 31, 2013, 04:49:53 AM I am new the the world of Doctor Who and time lords. My first experience to it was at comic con in September. I didnt get it. I met a guy at con and we talked about the series. I couldnt get into the old series and he said start with the 9th doctor. So upon his advice I did. Watched season1 with the 9th doctor and when he regenerated and became the 10th doctor david tennant I was HOOKED. Have not been able to stop watching since. Whenever I have spare time which is not often and at night after my wife goes to bed I try to watch and episode or two before i go to bed. Very seldom do i get hooked on a series this quickly and just want to watch every episode from start to finish. The last two shows that hooked me like this were 24 and the Big Bang Theory. Proud to stay that I LIKE Doctor Who.

He was angry...I liked it. And I have to admit though that DT was def the best out of the newer ones for me. Something about his compassion and light-heartedness all at the same time. Very excited to see how Peter Capaldi does.
Title: Re: Favourite Doctors, TARDIS, companions, and arcs. Post by: JEStucker on January 27, 2014, 04:37:54 PM Been catching up some Doctor Who classic lately... I had completely forgotten that the 1st series were only 30 minute episodes. I guess as I was seeing them in reruns growing up they were running two of them back to back to fill an hour time slot. It seems the hour long format didn't come about until the 3rd Doctor and the switch to color in 1970 or so.

I've seen all of 9th doctor several of the 10th and two seasons of the 11th. It's a great show just got into it in the last two months Title: Re: Favourite Doctors, TARDIS, companions, and arcs. Post by: Kham-Ryn Kurios on January 28, 2014, 12:16:19 AM (http://cdn.screenrant.com/wp-content/uploads/doctor-who-peter-capaldi-costume.jpg) Here’s the description from the BBC: “Sporting a dark blue Crombie coat with red lining, dark blue trousers, a white shirt as well as black Dr. Marten shoes, the look was created by Doctor Who costume designer Howard Burden.” It’s all rather plain and bland, isn’t it? According to Peter Capaldi, though, the Time Lord’s new look is supposed to be basic. “He’s woven the future from the cloth of the past. Simple, stark, and back to basics. No frills, no scarf, no messing, just 100 per cent Rebel Time Lord.” Source: http://screenrant.com/doctor-who-peter-capaldi-official-costume-image-gallery/ (http://screenrant.com/doctor-who-peter-capaldi-official-costume-image-gallery/) Title: Re: Favourite Doctors, TARDIS, companions, and arcs. Title: Re: Favourite Doctors, TARDIS, companions, and arcs. Post by: Kresnik on January 28, 2014, 12:32:12 AM Count Who ? His body structure lends to more of a vampiric vibe and the under red lining ...
I think he will be good. Title: Re: Favourite Doctors, TARDIS, companions, and arcs. Post by: Jammo on January 28, 2014, 03:52:50 AM It looks like it might have been stolen from Christopher Lee's closet, which makes it cool.

Title: Re: Favourite Doctors, TARDIS, companions, and arcs. Post by: BenPass on February 01, 2014, 05:45:57 AM Well, it's a month late, but I finally got caught up to and saw the Christmas Special. I've seen plenty of ragging on it, but I enjoyed it. Didn't love Handles as much as (nearly) everyone did, but it was still a good episode!
And to update my earlier sentiments, Matt Smith did grow on me. It took a while, but he did well. I'm really looking forward to Capaldi though, and seeing what he brings to the table! Honestly, I never saw the big deal with Handles. Ehh, to each his own though. At first I didn't like how the regeneration went down. So fast, kinda like he sneezed or something. But, the more I thought about it the more it made sense. I agree though still a great episode and nice way for MS to go out. Very excited for Capaldi as well! Post by: Aerthias Kodoun on April 01, 2014, 05:28:48 AM DOUBLE POST!!!
So, I've begun watching the Trial of a Time Lord... Had no idea it was a six hour long serial. It's my first Sixth Doctor adventure, and I must say, why does everyone hate him? He seems like a good enough Doctor, so why all the hate? Also, why has The Valeyard not appeared since then? He's probably the most brilliantly thought up Doctor Who villain ever!
