Title: blade plug customizations show them off ( pic heavy)
Post by: Relan Tarel jedi kinght on February 15, 2014, 04:25:25 AM
Well I've been seeing some really great blade plugs lately using some in expensave materials (that's key) and I wanted to make my contrabution. And this thread on how I made mine. And I want you all to add yours so keep'em comm'en.

To start here is one using the core of a brushless motor and a section of blade material. This piece is from an uemg blade I carefully ground out enough of the material inorder to fit the motor core to be press fit, no glue yet but its a pritty tight fit.

Well some pieces are electric motor cores some are faucet vents, heads from electic razers, camera flashes with altered pluming fixtures. You name it use your imagination and go nuts

My blade plug was made from scraps and a quartz crystal, its none too pretty and quite heavy but I like it.

Here are some shots of two crystal chamber plugs that I made. They are modifications of US bladeplugs using an amethyst, a quartz crystal, paperclips, polymer clay, lenses from a scope, copper wire, and a dead diode.

Point for the thread creator, and I was about to spend some money to buy some like these...thanks for the motivation to get creative! The razor head looks very promising and simple enough, but the motor core looks even more simple. Nice work gents points all around.

I've made a few with my 4 year old daughter - nothing to match anything on here, just using blade offcuts and beads from a hobby shop.

Can anyone recommend a clear-drying glue, though? We've used super glue and it dries white, which makes the interior of the plugs look pretty untidy. I can try and clean it with nail polish remover, I guess.

Hot glue should be effective. Just takes a little practice and quick fingers.  This should help...Watch "Glue Gun Tips and Tricks" on YouTube

The saber is named Redemption. The Hilt is a US Shock with parts from the "Other Guys" and a lot of electrical work inside of the hilt thanks to a friend of mine that was a sabersmith. I would tell you the part, but I'd get in trouble for mentioning another company, so I'll PM you about it instead.

Oh, excuse my ignorance :-[ Nah, I was wondering whether it was from US so that I can add it to my upcoming "extra parts" order when I get my paycheck. But thanks for the info, and again, very nice looking saber!

Here's my first custom blade plug.  Just finished it last night.  It was inspired by another custom plug I saw on the Internet somewhere, where the builder was making plugs that resembled jet engines.  I don't remember who it was or where I saw it, but whoever hat was definitely inspired my design.

(http://i.imgur.com/LjcGDto.jpg) (http://imgur.com/LjcGDto)

(http://i.imgur.com/ok50nV5.jpg) (http://imgur.com/ok50nV5)

The plug is made up of the end of a pen for the cone, the disk is from the innards of a hard drive, and the head from a razor.

The plug sits above the ring of the emitter and this is by design.  A couple of months ago one of the standard plugs got stuck in the emitter and I had to drill it out to remove it.  This fixes that issue.

More pictures can be found here (http://imgur.com/a/9fjxw#0).

Gorilla glue.

The razor head is glued to the top of the tube.  The disk is glued on top of that, but the razor head just barely sits on the edge of the tube so the disk is actually glued to both the razor head and the tube.  The code is glued to the razor head.

Good work I like it. Have a point. It looks bood in the bellicose.
What kind if parts did you use? If looks like you did some kit bashing.
Maby a hub cap from a model car and some clock work gears.

Awesome. What did you use for parts?

Looks like he used a chunk cut from a leftover blade (or perhaps blade plug), an electric shaver head, and part of a model car.

Shaver head should be easy to get a hold of as they do need to be replaced periodically.
Here in Aus we have a chain of specialist shops that sell shaving gear (and hair curlers and stuff), including parts for shavers. Any department store that sells shavers should, in theory, have replacement heads.

Thank you! I found a generic looking set on Amazon for pretty cheap. It came in a three pack.

Close ;)  It is an US blade plug, razor head, and a piece from a gear set actually.

How do you guys get the razor head out?

That's probably heavily dependent on the razor itself. You'd have to look around on your own razor to see just how it disassembles. It shouldn't be too difficult, since they are meant to come apart for washing.

Accidently started a new thread on mine. Doh. Anyway thought I'd add it here too. ;)

My first attempt at a custom blade plug. Used an extra blade plug piece and attached an old PC fan motor with Gorilla glue. Sanded the edges smooth with fine sandpaper. The popped it into my Prophecy. Took about 30 mintues tops. Looks okay for a first attempt.

Based on the idea of a jet engine intake.
The outter edges could use a little more sanding though. :D

I used the blade plug from the previous order (didn't order one with the Scorpion >_<), took out the metal piece, cut off a little bit, sanded all surfaces for a little more light dispersion... and attached another piece of a solid dark gray PVC tube to it with the head piece from an old unused razor.
This way, the translucent part fits right into the length of the slanted emitter of the Scorpion.

Check outshapeways.com. there's a bunch 3D printed blade plugs on there. Its a good place to get some inspiration.
The ones I've done are pritty simple, maby using up to four conponets.
A base for light defusion a ring to hold it( usually a gromit) the focus of the plug and an add on for asticetics. I pritty mutch use parts from hardwhare stores craft stores and what ever I have laying around.
But if you want to know how i made mine let Me know and I can show you.

I've been theorizing on how to jazz those plugs up for a while now... I'l let you know if I "absorb" some of your ideas.  :P
My focus is still on my Blade Holder (Raven SS) and some Dremel based venting and other smoothing and reshaping ideas in mind.
Not as "in depth" as your work, but let me know what you think.

SteampunkSith, that's one awesome looking plug, but I must protest, (as a fan of antique clocks and watches,) the destruction of an actual mechanical pocket watch for this purpose. :)

Darth Cooper, what saber is that??? That's flippin' bad-a, and I must have one.

The creativity I've seen on this thread is incredible. The use of parts of common items is genius. George Lucas would be proud.

Have no fear!  I used parts from a lot of busted, broken, nonworking watches from eBay, as well as crafty doodads from Michael's.   ;D  I am HUGE into upcycling, repurposing, and recrafting!

Nice! I used shapeways for my DSI shroud and for a part to my next blade plug. I have another shroud in the works now for my Dominix. It's a great resource.

Darth Cooper, what saber is that??? That's flippin' bad-a, and I must have one.

The creativity I've seen on this thread is incredible. The use of parts of common items is genius. George Lucas would be proud.

I have been customizing my Dark Initiate LE v3, for a Steampunk Sith costume I am working on...  Here is my blade plug, nicely Steampunked out...  I used vintage watch parts, decorative/crafting gears, and lock washers, and used Liquid Nails Perfect Glue as the adhesive...

The Horus traveled to France after my client sold it back to the gentleman there, he bought it back and sent it back to me with a bad switch, I thought to show a pic of the laser-cut acrylic blade plug that originates in Japan as I just finished the repair

Finally got the parts in for my Shock LE blade plug. I view the saber as an Old Republic hilt so I put the Galactic Republic symbol in it with a gold-trimmed silver ring around the edge to match the saber. There is also a razor blade cap below the symbol. Here it is:

It's actually GB, but close! It's a great saber, you're gonna love it. I used an US blade plug with the metal disc knocked out, a rotary razor blade cap, and a size 13 ring that is 6mm wide (make sure it isn't more than 1-2mm thick). The symbol is a 3D model I made and ordered from a 3D printing site. It's also good to use something behind the razor cap to block the light better. I used some 3M command strips I cut to fit inside.

Copper wire,
sewing machine bobin
1 inch pvc clear
some hot glue

total  in parts <$3

Ok, so here is my first round of DIY blade plug.  Maybe I'll make more. Maybe not. It's pretty easy, but I need to get a little neater. Practice makes perfect I suppose. Finding a nice metal ring that would go around the poly carb might be nice.

Just looked through all 9 pages of this thread, and man is that impressive!  I recently ordered a rather nice looking blade plug from one of "the other guys", which I thought was pretty cool.  But, some of the home made plugs I have seen here just bury it!  I have an extra blade laying about which is pretty battle damaged.  Perhaps I will make an attempt, or two, at making a custom plug.

Thanks for the inspiration!

You could always cut off about 2 inches of a blade especially if you have a 36 inch blade. Bringing it down to 34 incsh ,fits my hight any way.I like to use mid grade blades for my blade plugs.

I don't want to mess up and ruin the only blade I have. And my Aeon's blade socket is 3.25" deep.

I tried a film canister and it was way too big. If you go down to a hardware store, you can pick up a piece of PVC. It is not transparent but it will work as a base. A;so, there is a new material they are using for plumbing called PEX. It is translucent and you should be able to get it in the right diameter. You will have to sand off the print or cut a section between print.

I have some pieces of 1" PVC and they are JUST too big. Like literally a hair wider than the blade socket.

I think I saw somebody on here make these blade plugs too and call them "poor man's crystal chambers."

Take these plastic crystals,

Jam them in a blade plug,

And insert the plug in an emitter with windows.  Like a Manticore,

A reaper,

And maybe an Archon with a vented coupler for a neck.

Looks good and straightforward. I had a similar concept with quartz and amethyst crystals and copper wire on page one of this thread. Depending on the emitter, you sometimes have to sink the plug into the saber to get the crystal to line up with the window.

I have trouble with blade plugs in that they look best when lit. If lit, they drain battery power and, if you have a sound card, make sounds that they should not be making unless there is a blade to swing. To remedy this, I made this blade plug out of a cheapo flashlight I got as a promotional gift, wrapped with clear tape to get to the right thickness, and capped with a red filter, a piece of tissue paper, and a gear from an old VCR. I sprayed the gear black as a ground and colored with a silver sharpie. Total money spent on supplies = $0, and since it lights itself, no drain on the battery or inappropriate sound effects.

OK...first attempt at a custom blade plug. Here goes...

I started with just a 1.5" long piece of 1" stainless steel tubing that I got at work(the 1.5" instead of 2" allows for a recessed look), as I was there without a blade when my LED module came popping out of the emitter. I got my Dark Initiate LE V4 at Tulsa Comic Con and never had any idea to purchase a blade plug, so the stainless tubing would get me by. Later that evening, I wandered around Hobby Lobby looking for materials I could use, which is awkward when you are using items for purposes other than what they were intended. I needed something to diffuse the intense light, so I tried clear glass beads in an Elmer's School Glue medium. It didn't really dry clear, so it blocks a little more light than I planned. Also, I put all this in clear plastic coin tubes meant for coin collecting. The penny size just happened to slip right into the 1" stainless tubing.

Then I bought some cool looking round gear like objects in the jewelry making department and some fakery type bobbins near the scrapbooking/doll house section.

It all came out something like this:

It's a little rough, I know, but I'm happy with it, being the first go at this.

OK...first attempt at a custom blade plug. Here goes...

It's a little rough, I know, but I'm happy with it, being the first go at this.

UPDATE:

The school glue didn't set for a long while, and kind of went south on me. It either wore the finish off of the metal gear piece or rusted it:

So I decided to play around with some two part liquid epoxy that is used for casting. Really cool stuff and it can also be pigmented with translucent pigment to make colored blade plugs as well. I filled it to the top and then gently placed the half bobbin back on.

It made a really nice prism effect. You can see the gear throught each hole...

I really like this epoxy and will have many blade plug posts to come...

Here's another blade plug...
This one was made with nickel sized coin tube, two part casting epoxy, and a metal gear object. I dropped the gear into the coin tube and filled with epoxy. Once epoxy was set, I cut it down to a hair less than 2" and wet sanded both sides, to frost it. This didn't diffuse the light enough so I glued a white circle from copy paper to the end opposite the gear.

Not my favorite blade plug, but right now I'm just experimenting with the epoxy.

Greetings to you all.

Swung by Home Depot  to get materials (see photos below) to build a PVC end(s) capped foam sheath to protect the "plasma" blade (Saber finally arrived 5/7/15!!!) when removed from the hilt and also re-purposed an old flashlight base by installing a larger "sealing" o-ring to plug the hilt keeping it dust free and preventing blinding someone with an inadvertent "plasma blast". I added an additional o-ring on the plug between where the hilt "top" and plug "lip" meet (avoiding metal on metal contact).  It surprisingly fits really snug with larger o-ring and the base/plug has a translucent rubber insert allowing me to check for weak or dead batteries as "red crystal" illuminates the insert. ;)

Well mine isn't as impressive as alot ive seen here but im tossing it up anyways :D, its just made from standard parts of a wind up motor and a kitchin sink screen, the tube ive seen crystals before but i didn't want the weight associated with them, so... all i did was use a glue gun and drip it into the other end, and swirled it around as i went, lightly dry brushed it with some green model paint. it looks like a crystal to me ;D
I couldnt capture a decent shot of it veiwing through the actual emitter windows, was too bright ( like thats a bad thing LOL. so i too pictures of it out from the LED so you can see. it looks nice  in person  i just couldn't make the picture Gods cooperate

Wow Bulvoy that plugs AMAZING!  Seriously it looks incredible.  If you're gonna be uploading pics anytime In future, mind throwing one up of the plug unlit?  And super creative crystal chamber, great job it totally does make for a realistic looking crystal.  Point awarded for this beauty for sure :).

I know it's sacrilege but I got a blade plug from the "other guys" (as well as their covertech wheel) and while the acrylic tube is the same, the actual plug is about 1mm too large so it sits a top my manticore emitter. Still quite like the design. (http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160202/03c76b67bd7ff7cbac6d0b0742698d7d.jpg)

How do you make your own blade plugs?

There are tons of ways. basically you just need something that you can stick down the end of your emitter. The good news is, you're already reading the right thread. I actually was just going back through it from the beginning looking for some tips, trick and ideas. And, I found some ;) There are a lot of great tips and tricks so, I'm not going to take credit for anybody's ideas by repeating them.

What I did was simply replace the insert that was in my per-existing US standard plug with something I stumbled upon. I seem to always have my out  for cheap and easy caber upgrades lately. You will become consumed in your constant upgrade quest so you might as well keep it on the cheap. ;)

Happy hunting and MTFBWY

Not exactly a customization, but if love sour things and are looking to turn your saber into a flashlight, I've found that using an old Warheads spray bottle cap works really well.

been brainstorming a crystal chamber- I'll need a way to focus the light from a high powered accent led into a crystal-i know i can come up with some kind of module, but i've been wondering what the heck i was gonna do for a  lens.  And i really wanted to keep as much of the project as possible created with stuff i could just find/ convert as opposed to buying stock parts.  I like the looks of this :).  Thanks, I'm gonna check that out.

If you're referring to me, then you're very welcome! I'm glad to inspire people. Just keep in mind though, while the caps are pretty transparent they're not nearly as clear as, say, a blade plug.

Here's my first custom blade plug.  Just finished it last night.  It was inspired by another custom plug I saw on the Internet somewhere, where the builder was making plugs that resembled jet engines.  I don't remember who it was or where I saw it, but whoever hat was definitely inspired my design.

(http://i.imgur.com/t0JgGxO.jpg) (http://imgur.com/t0JgGxO)

This is the best plug I've seen. I keep coming back to revisit the pics. 😁

Wow- these last so are real gems!! Incredible :).  I believe the inspiration he was talking about was from a smith named Arkm, on a couple other forums-  he was the very first person to do the razor head blade plug, and did a lot of these turbine types- I was inspired to do a similar one (posted back further here) when I saw his too lol!

Pipe coupler. Cheap toy crystal. Glue. PVC to reach LED module for holding it in place when in use. 7 dollars all together.

another easy  spare parts laying around plug,  a wheel from a dremel polishing kit, it came with a few, and a simple pen tip from my jar ,  i kept thinking turbine from a jet plane lol.  all i did was epoxy the pen tip to the center and then twist the wheel into the plug, hot glued it down from the other end
Like i did before i dripped glue from a glue gun into the plug and swirled it around, sort of a Melted effect, very hard to catch a good angle to see on camera, so i pulled away from the emitter so you could see better. it looks cool in i think, anyways thought id share,  If you are curious which saber this is in,  it is  my Menace custom i did here on page 2.

(After leather and etched emmiter end) never messed with epoxy what kid you use to glue pen cap to the dremmeled wheel? Could you fill the blade tip with epoxy instead of melted glue gun? (Saw others using epoxy to fill plug and I'm curious)

Hey Ginsu :)

Ready for a laugh lol?  I Used one of three electric razor heads that I ripped from my only electric razor, which I miss dearly lol, never found another one that does the job as well- used the actual brass blade part that spins around inside the guard/ cage, and also that cage itself- plus a little watch battery, and a tiny bit of black wire.  Used the dremel with cutting heads, stones, and a file to seat the parts down inside flush (took longer than I thought), used dremel to recess the centre of the razor guard/ cage so the battery would sit nicely (upside down) in the center, then epoxied it in place.  Fit some wire to around it all to give nice edge and almost like a coil type look or something... I dunno but it just kinda seemed right lol.

Before I knew about this thread I actually made a post for those plugs that shows way more pics and I think I described process better too (didn't wanna spam up this thread too much when posted originally).  But this post would be WAY back there lol and I can't even remember exactly what it's called- My first custom blade plug I think.  The 'Aluminum Black Detailing!' post is around page 19 ATM I believe, prob back near that one, and actually there might be other pics there too.

Nice!

Haha, yeah that'd be tough to figure out!  Not all newer razors have that style blade- but a lot of older ones do.  I bet if you could find somebody who had an older one kick'n around, or checked a second hand shop maybe?

Always like yours Raven looks killer in C green.
Giglamesh it's spring going into summer perhaps hit some yard sales etc by some cheap power tools take them apart  prolly even find older electric razors. I have some parts from an old blender for my next one LOL. There is all kinds of parts, capacitors stuff like that ya can use, Which are low cost. Limits are only set by your own imagination.

Yeah that's totally a good call- didn't think of yard sales!  Think I better make the rounds this year for parts.  got a scratch build I wanna get moving on, but missing one or two bits lol so can nail that bird while I'm at it... Plus something tells me this is the year my ac dies, so here's hoping I can make it a hat trick :).

What would you guys recommend as a good replacement for a blade plug tube?

Acrylic tubes might be ok. PVC pipe. Brass or aluminum pipe. Anything that can hold the LED module in place safely.

Acrylic Tubes, aha! Much better. I was searching for PVC pipes and all I could find where the flexible hose type tubes, wasn't sure that would work so well.

Acrylic is not nearly as strong, and shatters when it breaks. If you need to cut it, make sure you have a safe way to cut without pieces etc. flying off.

Most typical tablesaw blades are perfectly fine for acrylic as long as you go slowly, if you're like most and don't have a tablesaw then any fine-toothed hand saw will be good too. Shoving acrylic through a table saw or using broad-toothed hand saw is a sure way to chip or crack it.

Go to Lowe's for a 1.79$ per foot vinyl tubing. HomeDepot was selling it in 20 foot rolls, but Lowe's would cut it by the foot as requested. I think it was labeled 3/4 inch by the inside diameter. It holds the LED housing in place.

Just a simple mod, but I think it looks cool!
Unfortunately Photobucket is playing up at the moment, but these links work!
I just drilled a hole into the middle of a Circle blade plug, then hot glued a grease nipple into the hole. The last 4 photos are of it inserted into my Graflex.

Just finished my plug.  My concept....It's an external crystal chamber for an ancient Sith lightsaber.

^ WOW  :o  The crystal really "shines" in that custom blade plug  ;)

Great job! The copper accents are a nice touch as well. I've always been fond of copper on a saber. +1

Hi.  This is one of the best blade plugs that I have seen.  Great job and I also really like your creative customization to the rest of the saber.  The plug really takes this saber to another level.  Well deserved point for you.  8)  :D

Graflex plug.

1/4" brass tubing, scored rings into it and cut tiny stub of it for the base.  Then cut and inserted a piece of copper rod, capped with knurled brass acorn nut.

A more simple but well thought out plug customization that adds a touch of class.   The different metals and texture/design make it visually interesting.   Looks great with your Graflex and compliments/highlights the gold tones in this saber.   point   8)

My Photobucket is working again (finally!), so here's my attempt!
Drilled a hole into the middle of a Circle Blade plug, then hot glued a 6mm Grease Nipple into it - simple, but looks cool, I think!

Thanks D7:)!

Looks awesome Seano! Our plugs are really similar actually lol, you can tell we both got the same type of basic idea about the 'flex plug.  I like the way the base of yours looks especially, it's a really nice fit with the plug.  Point coming soon as I can :).

A little Necroposting here but when I used the search function, this seemed like the most apt place to put this:

Yes yes I know it would look better if the light passed through the crystal but haven't drilled it yet...

That's some serious bling there, I like it. We kinda have a new thread for blade plugs here http://www.saberforum.com/index.php?topic=37500.0 It started up recently, mainly because this thread has been stricken with Photobucket cancer.

Hi all.  Somehow this thread became unlocked but is now closed again.  There are still some good photos and emitter plug how to information to be seen.  However there are many more of the photobucket kitten and notification pics mixed inbetween.

Please share your latest blade plug creations on the newest thread which is just below this one.  :)
