Title: Combat myths and realities on TPLA live! Friday 7:00pm EST Post by: Darth Nonymous on September 04, 2012, 05:49:02 PM Greetings Saberites!
TPLA Live is back this week Friday with another discussion on the art of sabering. This week we will be going over some of the myths and realities of weapons fighting. There are many things to go over in this vein, so If anyone would like a particular subject addressed, post here. VorNach and I will be able to re-create scenarios and test any ideas you have in a free sparring setting. Then tune in Friday @ 7pm May the Force be with you! We'll monitor on the fly but it's very helpful to have an idea about what direction some people are interested in having us explore. Title: Re: Combat myths and realities on TPLA live! Title: Re: Combat myths and realities on TPLA live! Friday 7:00pm EST Post by: Veldryne on September 07, 2012, 06:38:38 PM Fights for demonstration, and movies are always more drawn out than a real world fight is, for necessity of drawing out the storyline.
From a real combative perspective, how would you approach a choreographed fight, while making it entertaining to the audience, while attempting to stay true to real world combat techniques. What sort of things would you take into consideration while doing so? Title: Re: Combat myths and realities on TPLA live! Friday 7:00pm EST Post by: Hake Felflame on September 07, 2012, 06:45:53 PM There's always a dramatic lock-up of weapons in movie fights. Does locking blades for any extended period of time server any purpose other than dramatic tension?

Title: Re: Combat myths and realities on TPLA live! Friday 7:00pm EST Post by: Bazzard on September 07, 2012, 07:31:03 PM Here's one that's always been kind of a bugbear to me: "Rock-paper-scissors" Martial Arts
This shows up in a lot of older kung fu movies-- Mantis Style beats Crane Style, Tiger Style beats Mantis, etc etc. Inigo and Westley talk about it during the awesome 'chatty duel' in the Princess Bride ("Naturally you expect me to attack using Capo Ferro." "Naturally, but I've found that Thibault cancels out Capo Ferro, don't you?" "Unless the enemy has studied his Agrippa....which I have!") Basically, the premise is that you've got several different martial arts that kind of one-up each other in a rock-paper-scissors fashion (or, in a more nerdy reference, like the various elements in Pokemon), where one style is inherently strong against one or inherently weak against another. This has annoyed me for a really long time, and I'd like to see it addressed. Title: Re: Combat myths and realities on TPLA live! Friday 7:00pm EST Post by: Darth Nonymous on September 07, 2012, 07:43:50 PM Here's one that's always been kind of a bugbear to me: "Rock-paper-scissors" Martial Arts haha. yes. This has annoyed me for a really long time, and I'd like to see it addressed. but actually it isn't in any of the old Kung fu movies. Those plots were just so complicated for western viewers they dumbed it down to that in the dubs for the grindhouses. Or people just made it up. Like the fact that there is very little blood and gore in Texas Chainsaw Massacre- even though everyone swears there is. How about this: We can talk about how styles and techniques are not turned on and off in a fight. Like no one can "use makashi" to open one up then Djem So to finnish them off. We will also address the fact that every style will have all the basics covered and that huge glaring holes in defense and/or technique that make one vulnerable would be addressed in the training. etc. Title: Re: Combat myths and realities on TPLA live! We go on in about 40 minutes so there's still plenty of time to ask more. Title: Re: Combat myths and realities on TPLA live! Friday 7:00pm EST Post by: Hake Felflame on September 08, 2012, 12:02:52 AM In case it got lost in the comments, yes you did get my name right the first time, VorNach. :P

Title: Re: Combat myths and realities on TPLA live! Friday 7:00pm EST Post by: Thonolan on September 08, 2012, 05:08:57 AM great show Guys! really informative. I love the part about spins, and adapting them to combat. I'm prone to flaring out a spin or 2 and it's really good to see ways that I can adapt the movement to make it less useless.
Points! Title: Re: Combat myths and realities on TPLA live! Friday 7:00pm EST Post by: Bazzard on September 08, 2012, 07:47:33 AM Awesome show, guys! I love your answers, how you're able to cover lots of ground but still delve into each question enough that it's a complete answer rather than just glancing over it.
(Also, sorry about my question being so long-winded. And for the sake of future reference, my name's pronounced like "buzzard" but with an A--that is quite literally the only thing I can correct) Title: Re: Combat myths and realities on TPLA live! Master Kane, do you differ with anything said? Title: Re: Combat myths and realities on TPLA live! Friday 7:00pm EST Post by: Nhylus on September 09, 2012, 02:26:00 AM Very cool, I didnt have time to watch the entire thing unfortunately. But from what I saw, I hope it continues! Maybe in the future have a script or quick summary in the Description bar. And perhaps in-video links to when questions are asked. Such as:
"Does ____ really work in a real fight?" - Blablablabla blablabla, go to @2:38 for more detail. Title: Re: Combat myths and realities on TPLA live! Friday 7:00pm EST Post by: Master Lucien Kane on September 09, 2012, 05:07:05 AM I didn't watch all of it, but I went through it... everything looked pretty on target to me... I like how you covered the usefulness of flourishes, if you do a part two I'll make it a point to be there... I was out job hunting all day Friday... Sorry guys.

A part 2 you say? What kind of interest is there in having us continue / elaborate on this topic? Title: Re: Combat myths and realities on TPLA live!
