Greetings Saberites!
TPLA Live is back this week Friday with another discussion on the art of sabering. This week we will be going over some of the myths and realities of weapons fighting. There are many things to go over in this vein, so If anyone would like a particular subject addressed, post here. VorNach and I will be able to re-create scenarios and test any ideas you have in a free sparring setting.
Then tune in Friday @ 7pm
May the Force be with you!

Please do post any thoughts or questions you have ahead of time. We'll monitor on the fly but it's very helpful to have an idea about what direction some people are interested in having us explore.

I'm going to try to make it to this, mainly because this will be a fun subject for discussion.

Fights for demonstration, and movies are always more drawn out than a real world fight is, for necessity of drawing out the storyline.
From a real combative perspective, how would you approach a choreographed fight, while making it entertaining to the audience, while attempting to stay true to real world combat techniques.
What sort of things would you take into consideration while doing so?

There's always a dramatic lock-up of weapons in movie fights. Does locking blades for any extended period of time server any purpose other than dramatic tension?

Here's one that's always been kind of a bugbear to me: "Rock-paper-scissors" Martial Arts
This shows up in a lot of older kung fu movies-- Mantis Style beats Crane Style, Tiger Style beats Mantis, etc etc. Inigo and Westley talk about it during the awesome 'chatty duel' in the Princess Bride ("Naturally you expect me to attack using Capo Ferro." "Naturally, but I've found that Thibault cancels out Capo Ferro, don't you?" "Unless the enemy has studied his Agrippa....which I have!")
Basically, the premise is that you've got several different martial arts that kind of one-up each other in a rock-paper-scissors fashion (or, in a more nerdy reference, like the various elements in Pokemon), where one style is inherently strong against one or inherently weak against another. This has annoyed me for a really long time, and I'd like to see it addressed.

haha. yes. but actually it isn't in any of the old Kung fu movies. Those plots were just so complicated for western viewers they dumbed it down to that in the dubs for the grindhouses. Or people just made it up. Like the fact that there is very little blood and gore in Texas Chainsaw Massacre- even though everyone swears there is. How about this: We can talk about how styles and techniques are not turned on and off in a fight. Like no one can "use makashi" to open one up then Djem So to finnish them off. We will also address the fact that every style will have all the basics covered and that huge glaring holes in defense and/or technique that make one vulnerable would be addressed in the training. etc.

Thanks for the questions folks. We go on in about 40 minutes so there's still plenty of time to ask more.
