Dark Side Points Please

« on: April 01, 2014, 07:09:00 AM »

In the next few days I'll have my Dominix main saber and a Dark Initiate as a blocking dagger. Being the complete geek that I am I want to make these sabers my own. And as a theatre major I've been toying with the idea of a Comedy and Tragedy saber pair. I already have some ideas floating around in my head such as vented shrouds with different designs for comedy and tragedy, as well as different color leather wraps (dark for tragedy and lighter for comedy.) I also have some keychain sized masks that I've had forever and would like to incorporate into the design, probably hanging off of some leather string off the end, kind of like I've seen a few times around here.

I've lifted ideas from a few of my fellow members:

A shroud like Knuckles used in their Dominix v3 Rebuild

And the leather string that I've been referring to as "Charm Tails" like Aletani put on her custom saber.

I'm trying to stay neutralish, not going too sithy if possible. I'll be posting up pics as the builds progress.

Any comments, help, and inspiration are greatly appreciated.

Thanks all,
~Yetso

How big are the keyrings and what kind of material are they made from? Maybe you could incorporate them into the hilts themselves, maybe as a decorative item just above the activation switch.

They're pretty large. I'll grab pics of them later but they're about the size of a quarter and about 1/4" thick. Which is why I was thinking charm tails. I might be able to fit them on the shroud.

Here are the pics of the masks I'm gonna attach to my sabers. About the size of a quarter and about as tall as the pens I use. They'll probably end up on charm tails.

If you don't have it planned out,The Initiate would be a good Tragedy IE: It being a sort of Shorter thing like a knife.

What did you use to wrap the black cloth onto the saber?

that saber is not mine, its Aletani's which I'm drawing on for some inspiration. From what I can see though, it looks like some kind of thin leather lace.

Did some quick sketches of some ideas for the shrouds in paint (please excuse my lack of skills)

Anything teal is a "vent" in the shroud. These would obviously be modified for attachment bolts and things like that. Thoughts on my initial ideas?

Those are nice designs. They seem intricate though and therefore might be a little tough to cut so many vents into a piece of metal, or any shroud material for that matter. I'm not sure how skilled you are with dremels and such, but it might be an arduous task.

I do quite like the triangle concept. That could look quite cool.

I do share the concerns of the guy above me with regards to the practicality of it though.

First steps of my comedy/tragedy mods. I might change up the leather sometime. But this is what I've got so far. Changed the covertec to a D-Ring style.

I'm honored you'd use my saber as inspiration.

The wrap is a leather cord tied like a Samurai Ito wrap, with a very thin goat leather with an almost zebra like pattern of suede and polished leather finish. I do not recommend using such a thin leather (goat leather) as it tears and warps very easily.

Thanks for the advice. I'm a leather noob. (that sounded awkward)

Your saber and your overall costume are amazing. The saber really sparked an interest in a simple customization.

I've been working with cardboard tubes for a little bit to try and work out some shroud ideas. Here's what I've come up with so far.

For Comedy:

And for Tragedy I just watched all of The Clone Wars and likes Ahsoka's double sided shroud... still working on ideas for it, but I like it so far.

Any ideas, thoughts, or suggestions are welcome and greatly appreciated.

They look great so far, my only concern is the difficulty of making the intricate geometric shapes uniform and manageable.

Sometimes simple is better and I happen to find it very elegant. The tragedy shroud is a perfect example of that. Maybe you could contrast the subtle curving shape of the tragedy shroud by making some obvious angles in the comedy shroud instead of trying to do cut outs.

I don't want to discourage you though. Practice it a bit and I'm sure you'll be able to make them beautiful! Smiley
