What is the function of couplers?

So I've been looking at the Sentinel v4 Staff but I do not know what the coupler is used for. The base one it shows me to include is the standard coupler (no sound). Does this mean that it is for no sound sabers, or the coupler itself does not make any sound when the blade are put together and taken apart. If anyone can answer this question for me I'd really appreciate. Thanks.

A Staff = 2 sabers connected at their bases by means of a coupler.  Its the most important part of the staff because without it all you have is 2 fantastic sabers. Couplers with vent holes allow for sound to be heard if you have purchased the Obsidian sound cards for your sabers.  The coupler itself doesn't make noise. Hope that clear things up.  Staff is well worth it though. you get two sabers at a slightly less price than if you bought them separately.

Here's a photo of some sabers as a staff.  The first one has an adjustable vented coupler.  An adjustable instead of just vented so that the switches can easily be lined up.  The middle one has the flush coupler that can barely be seen.  I have placed some protectors on the ends so that there is less battery movement and potential pack breakage.  Note that on the bottom staff since one is a stunt and the other a sound, I have just placed the two together with no coupler for the photo. 

The most important thing to know is to never use a regular coupler with a sound saber.  You could end up tearing or pushing in the speaker if the solid coupler makes contact.  Also the sound will not have an unobstructed exit route.  It must be a vented coupler in any of the available styles.
