Having being mega impressed by the Daredevil and Jessica Jones Netflix series', some naively optimistic part of me can't help but imagine what a similar style, live action Spider-Man TV series would be like. It would give us chance to properly get to know Peter Parker, and establish his relationships with Aunt May, Uncle Ben, MJ, Harry, Norman, Doctor Connors, Gwen etc.
In my mind, the first series would be all about Peter Parker and not really about Spider-Man until the end, with us seeing how his school life is and as I said watching his interactions with those closest to him. He probably doesn't even get bit until a few episodes in and even then doesn't decide to become Spider-Man until the last episode in series 1 when uncle Ben dies. Ben lying dead in the street with a group of people gathered around him, sirens in the background and Peter screaming in agony could literally be the last shot of the series and then in season 2 he's already Spider-Man and being doing what he does for a few months, maybe using flashbacks to show the transformation. Meanwhile we see his relationship with Harry change and we see him become a darker, angrier person. He beats up thugs in alleyways but then he's faced with a true foe (could be just about any from his rogues gallery- preferably one we haven't seen too much of before).
This is where I felt Gotham went wrong (spoiler alert). I thought the Wayne's deaths shouldn't have happened until the end of the series, as Bruce is still a child I wanted to see just how important his parents were and explore new territory within the platform, but no. They had to kill them off straight away.
It would let us explore Peter's relationships as they develop over time and give him a villain who actually takes longer than 2 hours to defeat. That's why I love these series, Wilson Fisk (Kingpin), Kilgrave and now the Punisher. They seem like such solid and worthy villains when you compare them to a superhero movie, as they seem to take forever to defeat but without you getting tired of seeing them fight the hero.
Anyway it's just an idea but what do you guys think? Would you like to see something like that? And which villain would you like to see?
Personally I'd love to see Green Goblin, however due to so many iterations of the character being seen already maybe it'd be time to see a new Doc Ock, Venom and Carnage if done right, or even someone like Mysterio. We can dream!
First of all, screw you for getting my hopes up.
Secondly, as McClane said, Spidey is WAY too high profile to get a Netflix series.
Basically, it goes like this:
Movies: A-List tentpole heroes (Spidey, Avengers, X-Men, etc)
TV: B-List heroes (AoS, Agent Carter)
Netflix: B-List heroes on the darker side of Marvel (Punisher, Daredevil, Jessica Jones)
Netflix series are generally reserved for those heroes whose subject matter is too dark for regular television. Daredevil and JJ would have NEVER been approved for airing on ABC.
