The 2017-debuting "Star Trek" series has a full title -- "Star Trek: Discovery" -- and a new teaser with the first look at the show's new starship, the U.S.S. Discovery, has been released.

Check out the "Star Trek: Discovery" teaser below:

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bqm9HSYbf0o" target="_blank" class="aeva_link bbc_link new_win">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bqm9HSYbf0o</a>

The teaser was shown at the end of the Star Trek 50th Anniversary panel at Comic-Con International in San Diego, moderated by "Star Trek: Discovery" showrunner Bryan Fuller. Star Trek veterans William Shatner, Brent Spiner, Jeri Ryan, Michael Dorn and Scott Bakula also appeared at the panel.

During the session, Fuller told the crowd that the new Star Trek series would carry on in franchise tradition and "continue to be progressive," telling the "adventure of humankind." Following similar statements in earlier interviews, he said the show will be "telling stories like a novel," rather than the more episodic nature of past series.

"Star Trek: Discovery" is scheduled to debut on CBS' streaming service, CBS All Access, in January 2017.

Thoughts?

Personally, I'm not too thrilled. The CGI ship looks dodgy at best and cartoonish at worst. Plus, just as the NX-01 Enterprise took a lot of design cues from the Akira-class starship from the Dominion War era, this ship took cues from the Norway-class.

Not my favorite ship from Trek, either. I think the Steamrunner was a better design than the Norway...

Please tell me that's not the final animation.  That is some very, very poor CGI right there for 2016.  Battlestar Galactica, 10 years ago, was FAR more believable.  I hope that's only meant as proof of concept for the ship.  I'll wait until I see other trailers before I make a final judgment.  If that turns out to only be proof of concept and better stuff comes out after, I will be glad to give this a chance.

Otherwise, it substantiates my theory that the network execs have no faith in the property or the fanbase, which is so toxic and insular sometimes that it will reject ANYTHING that doesn't fit a narrow preconception.  Hence not wanting to put too much money or promotion behind something they're just doing to prove that the franchise is spent once and for all.  Why take the risk?

If that's what the score is going to be like in the series though, this may at least get a music purchase out of me even if nothing else.  The fact that they seem to have gotten away from the idea from the TNG days of intentionally bland music (well, after Ron Jones got fired for no other reason than being too awesome for Gene Roddenberry)

I do believe it's preliminary CGI. The current state of it isn't even fit to be part of a SyFy Original Movie, let alone a major TV network show. There are literally thousands of people in their parents' basements with piecemeal systems that can churn out better CGI than that while still making deadlines.

I very much hope that's the case.  Did they say so specifically?

You read the same article as I did...

I sincerely hope that's the case, too. I'd hate for Trek to wind up looking like a backyard cheap production.

in terms of tv, your theory might be correct. But in movie terms they have already confirmed a fourth movie.

I agree that I was underwhelmed with the look of the ship. And was expecting more from this teaser. What era is set in? Which timeline?

I'm enjoying rewatching the tv series on Netflix thoug

Interesting about confirming a fourth movie.  That may speak not just to the success of Beyond--but ALSO to a deliberate with to create a NEW and not as insular fanbase.  They may well be trying to REPLACE the old, toxic fanbase.  If the online series tanks, they'll have their proof that was the right move.

The fourth will co-star chris hemsworth as george kirk, working alongside captain kirk. who doesn't enjoy a good timetravel story in star trek? Lol

I know you are waiting till you se the movie before you read my non-spoiler review, but i thinky you will find something interesting in the after thoughts section i wrote.

*edit* i must say that there is definitely a section of the old fanbase that is acting very insular, but I hope they come to their senses amd realise that welcoming new fans into the franchise is the only reason it has survived 50 years. You may prefer the older movies over thr newer ones, but all Trek is good Trek (even Final Frontier, I suppose). They should take a page of the book used by Doctor Who fans.

Just to clarify one point, the ship design comes from way before the Norway class, from way before there was even a single Star Trek movie.  In the mid 1970s, they began working on a ST film titled "Planet of the Titans." Ralph McQuarrie (of Star Wars fame) did some design work for the film.  This design and the asteroid base appear to be based on his designs for that film.  So, it's a design that predates the Norway class by 20 years, with some changes.

I actually like it.  Granted, watched it my phone, but it looked good to me.  Though, given where the pilot is in production, it's unlikely to be a final sequence.  It's probably something they put together for the panel.  Anybody remember the early render of the NX-01 for TV Guide?  It looked pathetic compared to the final version from the show.

Judging from the more basic design and lower registry number, it looks like the show predates TOS.

Anywho, I'm waiting to see more.  I agree with Darth Justicar on the music.  I like it.

Edit: Here are some pics of the McQuarrie Enterprise design, which is obviously the base for the new ship:

You know, listening to the music again, I am really beginning to wonder if there's an implication that the Discovery is incorporating Klingon tech and designs.  Reason?  That aft-heavy, angular engineering hull is giving me a strong Klingon D7 cruiser vibe (the cruiser from the Original Series).

And it's when we get a really good look at the underside of the engineering hull that the music goes absolutely full on Klingon--VERY much seems to be playing on "Kronos Wartet" from the Into Darkness soundtrack.

Also, this theme from Search for Spock:

Oh...and I just had something unfortunate pointed out to me.  Look at the acronym for this show.  Just look at it.   Roll Eyes

Yeah, have a Dark Side point for pointing that out.  Now it's all I'm likely to think about when I see this name.  Tongue

Anyone else miss Trek speak in the new movies? Things like setting up a frequency harmonic between thee deflector and the shield grid using the warp field generator as a power flow anti-attenuator. As we all know, that, of course, naturally created an amplification of the inherent energy output.

I think stuff like that is what uniquely makes Star Trek what it is. Does it alienate or put off new fans or non-Trekkies?

You mean the lack of science in the science fiction?  Yes, that irks me to no end.  The type of thing you're talking about is that smart writing that Trek is known for, which is sadly missing from the more action oriented reboots.  They're trying to substitute clever writing with action and special effects, which works in other films but isn't the best recipe for Star Trek.

Originally, Star Trek got by on its writing.  And, that writing was done with the help of real world scientists acting as technical advisors (which many were happy to do) to make the future science as realistic as possible.  Here's hoping the new series brings back these elements.

As for alienating new viewers or not, it depends on the viewer.  Some will love the new formula, others not so much.
