I was going to ask you what the grippy stuff was, but you sort of covered that.  It looks like just knurled metal.  You say it may be coated?

It is a fair bit larger than average too eh?  Thanks for the comparison.

It may be just powder coating or anodizing.  I'm not sure.  It has a different feel than the other anodizing that US does and it's not shiny.
